That brings up a good point though. Why allow for a load outside of death anyway then? Why is save scumming conversations, lock picking, etc.. "acceptable", but reloading a **** poor RNG chest not?
none of that is acceptable and you shouldn't be able to reload, I agree.
Don't really know why you thought this was a "gotcha!"
I didn't.
I know you would like it (I have read your arguments) and I also think it would make the games very interesting, but I also know that the majority of gamers out there (even ones who claim they are) would absolutely hate such an implementation.
You don't get to where we are today with all the ******** convivence features in games and have a player base that would be receptive to that. It would be a **** storm of whining if a game was released like that, but it would be cool.
Please tell me you understand the argument of someone wanting to stop something that is impossible to stop...
this is the exact reason why canada now has open air government funded heroin dens btw
Not the same thing to be honest.
People cheating a game isn't a problem for anyone but the cheater.
The problem is with developers who listen to whiners and cheaters about things that can not be stopped and really have no positive effect on anything other than the "peice of mind" of someone who feels better because someone can't do something they don't want them doing.
If drug users didn't have any effect on society, it would be a non-issue, but they do... so it makes sense that there be steps to stop them from using drugs.
Playing Metroid Prime. I don't like how this game gates your progression.
The path is blocked by a block of ice. That's a good and a reasonable type of gating, once you get your hands on a fire-based weapon you get this 'aha!' moment because you immediately know that you need to go back and melt these ice blocks. The path is blocked and you can only proceed using a magnetic rail system? Again, that's perfectly fine and you get the 'aha' moment after acquiring the spiderball upgrade because you've already seen these magnetic rails everywhere.
But in addition to the obvious and easy to remember roadblocks, the game also uses the annoying "the path ahead is blocked by a large rock with cracks in it, now try to guess what weapon you need to use to blow it up". Hmm, maybe a missile? No, the rock remains intact. Maybe a charged shot from a beam gun? No, the rock stays the same. Maybe I should turn into a ball and use a morph ball bomb? No, the rock is still in place. Maybe I should fire a super missile? Yeah you can use scanning function on the destructible rock, but instead of a normal answer like 'this rock can be destroyed with a power bomb", it says "analysis says that this unstable rock formation is made of benzo-ligma material that can only be damaged with c-beams from the tanhauser gate". I'm not watching some 3 hours long Vaati video to find out what's that supposed to mean.
Found an ice gun. My first guess was "i can now explore those flamey areas in the magma caves! i will use this gun to freeze/douse the lava patches on the ground". Nah, te ice gun is only useful at opening the white-coded doors.
So yeah, most of the game's roadblocks are basically just color-coded doors, and rocks that can only be damaged with a specific explosive. Really creative stuff.

nintendo just took color code key design from 90s FPS and made a game around it, nintendo cultists thought it was the most revolutionary thing ever made like any other time nintendo takes existing mechanics and makes a game around it
Currently reading through the visual novel trilogy World End Economica
Okay but what games are you playing?
I've been playing WoW, preparing my characters for The War Within expansion that launches in a week and a half.
Upon logging in, you are immediately put into a 5 minute long recap cinematic. You get... how many names and terms thrown at you? Dark Titan Sargeras? Colossal blade? Magni Bronzebeard? Speaker? Cries of Azeroth? Mad Titan? N'zoth? Xal'atath? Cursed blade? Old Gods? The Shadowlands? Anduin Wrynn? Domination magics? Primal Dragon Iridikron? Titans? The Dark Heart? Radiant Song? Alleria Windrunner? The Harbinger? The engimatic Locus-Walker? Void Lord Dimensius? And on and on it goes. I felt like I was starting War of Dragons (the 20th season of Pili) on Netflix. Massive info dump of years and years of different storylines. Now I have been following the Warcraft story, but even for me it reeks of a soap opera that has been going on for 20+ years and is near impenetrable to outsiders.
We then get another janky ingame cutscene. For a billion dollar game that charges its millions of players $205 to play per year ($50 box expansions + $15 monthly subscription) and is Blizzard's golden goose, and the Worldsoul Saga that was marketed on the merits of its story to rival the competition, it is disappointing they didn't step up their cutscene game. Come on Blizzard. You're capableof better. Or was. Where did the people who made their hours and hours of in-engine Starcraft 2 cutscenes go?
Then we have the actual event. I had heard about lag, but flying around killing the mobs was pretty smooth, though I had no idea what I was doing. I was supposed to turn stuff in? To what? The pylons? I clicked on the pylons, but the bar at the top of the screen didn't seem to go up, so IDK if I contributed. So I just killed more blue things. Then Onyxia spawned. And then it happened. The lag. Holy crap, I have never experienced that level of lag in WoW before. Literally stuck for 15+ seconds unable to input anything. Trapped. I don't know what is wrong with retail WoW. This wasn't an issue when wagging 100+ player battles during MoP and before, and it isn't an issue when participating in the humongous WvW battles in GW2 or the meta events there where you have a hundred players all fighting a dragon and lots of adds at once. FF14's world bosses have some lag, as in 1 or 2 seconds, not literally 15 seconds of none of my inputs registering!
Once I was finished with the prepatch event, I went and did Shadowlands content to get a two-headed dragon mount for my alliance Pandaren Death Knight, who I might main in the upcoming expansion. Either him or my Tauren paladin main, who I am ambivalent about maining in TWW since the forecast for the next four years of WoW is Alliance themed.
You have to admit though. Those janky ingame cutscenes blow XIV ones out of the water every single goddamn time. XIV looks like it was made by some amateur hobby devs.
decided to give private servers a try since Wrath Classic is gone now
some weird **** in the Warmane servers i chose like cross-faction dungeon finder for lower level **** and some few oddities here and there, but i'm glad i can enjoy peak WoW without paying a cent to the hacks at Blizzard.

I never really quite understood how these expansions work. When you say "gone", that means you can't access any of Wrath of the Lich King's storyline and content?. If so that's pretty terrible.

Partially.
The raid and dungeon content is still there but when the game progresses to the next expansion hardly anyone actually bothers to do the old stuff. Also, Blizzard disables certain achievements and rewards because getting them with an overleveled party would be too easy.
Then there are cases like the Mists of Pandaria expansion where maps actually changed throughout the expansion and if you missed that you'd be stuck with the version where everything was just already done and the storyline was effectively over as far as the game world is concerned.
Private servers can get around many of those issues in a multitude of ways, as long as they don't get too popular at least. Then Blizzard's ****** lawyers start complaining.

it's mostly that since they went through with Cataclysm classic, all the level 1-60 areas are revamped (not exactly in a good way), they introduce new races (one of which is a cringe furry race), and talents and **** all are wildly different.
it just ****** me off since i made like a dozen characters in Wrath Classic i was levelling, and now they're ruined because if i wanted to continue levelling them i'd have to do it in the Cataclysm version of the zones.
so fuggit, private servers it is. should've done it in the first place.
Finished WarioWare Inc. Weird and amusing collection of 4-second microgames. I particularly liked the city pop song that played during the taxi level and the Lady Snowblood-knock-off theme in the female samurai level.
Finished Super Mario Land. The physics are terrible and it's incredibly short at only 12 levels that can be finished in about 30 minutes when played perfectly, I can see why it was forgotten and displaced by the much better sequel. At least the two vehicle sections were a fun change of pace.
I also tried out Earthbound and the combat was terrible, the music and battle screens incredibly off-putting.
Truth in advertising. I understand why Earthbound fans have the reputation they do now.

why are you playing as a ******
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

That is quite offensive to Orks. In most settings, they actually possess reason, speech, writing system(s), cities, culture and sometimes even a twisted sort of moral code.

They're ugly which is the worst sin you can commit.

What a coincedence, I decided to give Earthbound a try as well via the "MaternalBound Redux" hack which has a ton of improvements. Even then, though, the game and it's style just isn't for me. The more I look into the game and it's creator, Shigesato Itoi, the more I realize he really is a boomer in the western tradition. Named his series after a John Lennon song (yep), the game features a family who's father is entirely absent and unseen, and there is even a character in Earthbound who is considered to be gay. He was very ahead of his time though, having created a Reddit game long before the website was even around.
WC3 on Hard. Good fun. Mixed feelings about the orc campaign after the undead one, still hoping that NE campaign is as good as i remember. I thought about FT on Hard shortly after RoC, but I'm not sure I'll follow through, too much RTS in one go.
