I did read on reddit that the translation is legit and some commentors did also say that. There is also a lesbian themed quest in Hexi. I didnt play it but did see it on youtube. I gave up on the game after I encountered the woke there.

The city is massive, probably bigger than any I can think of that's not in a game just about a city(e.g., Cyberpunk 2077)

It being mistranslated as 'husband' would support my theory that all the non-campaign content is just being AI translated fwiw

Also, I recorded some of the ambient voices, it's either AI voice or fiverr-tier voice actors. The only reason I lean towards AI was the audible "sigh" I heard.

Mihoyo had lesbian romances in Honkai Impact 3rd. Then Genshin released and became a worldwide megahit to the point that CCP officially recognized Genshin as a form of softpower and a communist party committee overseeing Mihoyo was established. Mihoyo owner Liu Wei became a CCP officer. A few years ago the CCP released slides using Venti from the base launch of Genshin as an example that they did not want to see any femboys or androgynous characters being made by devs the devs, and then there were the censorship patches. The Mihoyo devs have expies of the HI3rd characters in Genshin and HSR including expies of the lesbians but when they got ported over it was severely downplayed or nonexistent. And then Mihoyo's next game ZZZ had ziltch of it. And then several years ago, there was a crackdown on authors of homosexual Mahua. The Their Story author wound up getting scared and she ceased drawing it, while those who did not got arrested. I think it was posted here that there was another arrest wave again.

So it is strange that a big release game like Where Winds Meet which seems to have this. Perhaps the stuff in WWM is so far low level enough that it hasn't become a high priority for the cultural committees to get around to yet. With a population of over a billion, there is probably so much stuff happening that their attention is being drawn elsewhere.

It being set in the distant past might be a factor. The CCP considered homosexuality to be a backward relic of imperial times, so I suppose they may be less bothered by it in a story about imperial times.

I had trouble understanding that Yingying IS the Ember of the East, I just thought she was his sister. I suspect the original language version may have had a part where she was forced to live as a male(?) which is why she ran away, but I can't say for certain. So when you see the Ember of the East, that's Yingying in 'disguise'.
The english version tries to say she ran away because of the feasts behind closed doors or somesuch and it just makes no sense at all.

I suspect if I sat down and actually compared original vs translation it would end up in @Oyster Sauce's thread because there's a lot of implication for stuff that just isn't there but I can tell should be there.

I don't speak Chinese, but my 漢和 dictionary tells me 郎君 can mean 'young lord'. If that NPC is supposed to be a servant, it fits.

To be clear I thought they were good stories! If this was just a CGI thing I'd have watched it and enjoyed it. But the interactivity part of a game wasn't used at all*. It's the kind of thing a western developer would be ridiculed for. Also, the stories are extremely heavy in actual obscure Chinese history and the spotty translation does not help. They're fictional reinterpretations of real events that happened but the people etc., are made up. The first one is a story about how cotton arrived in China, for example. Which might sound boring, but it was well told.

Some of the non-main quest stories in the area were similar semi-historical accounts but done much better e.g., Guo Xin at Whitecrown Fortress. This was a real person:

I wish the west had game developers that actually loved their history enough to do this. The closest thing we have is Kingdom Come Deliverance, the creator of which took a massive **** on it in the sequel after the original person funding it was no longer there.

Contrast with e.g., RDR2(should note it's made by brits tho, so…) which is just full of historical revisionism for pushing a modern narrative rather than using it because it improves the story. Assassin's creed games are likewise heavily subversive products.

It's fine. If I had to critique it, I'd say uneven production values.
I'd imagine it's not too dissimilar from crimson desert so you may not want to play it right after.
