I went with Total Overhaul. Is this overkill for a first-time player? I'm just messing around the opening area right now and everything seems to be working correctly. Only thing that's bothering me is this annoying delayed sound effect whenever I enter sneak mode. I'm doing a stealth build, so I don't want to put up with that for the entire thing. Anyone else experiencing this?
Found the culprit:

In the in-game options menu, and under scripts, there is a mod called 'Sol's Sneak Jump Dodge'. At the bottom of this mod's options is 'Jump buff ready sound?' Turning this option off disables that annoying sound effect.

Hope this helps anyone else with that issue!
I hate them.

Barbed penis book is in morrowind innit
No, it's in Daggerfall. Morrowind version was censored.
Inheriting weird anthro porn smut in your ten billion dollar IP's lore because some fan wrote it and you desperately needed books in your game 30 years ago is very funny

Mods-wise, i think the only mod that you should be installing (besides the obvious bugfixing ones) is the one that delays the spawn of Dark Brotherhood assassins.

Tribunal expansion adds these assassins that ambush you in your sleep, but unfortunately they start doing that immediately after you start the new game. They utterly wreck the low level players, but if somehow you manage to defeat them, the looted Dark Brotherhood armor breaks the armor progression due to being very good.

Nope, Morrowind is a fine game to play without mods, maybe outside Tribunal Delayed and some NPC mods to make the world more lively but that's it.

any good openmw-specific mods?

stuff that add unique features, not looking for modded content

I always play without addons before finishing main quest. You have no business with them before that anyway.

Engine reimplementation with many fixes and various enhancements like much better pathfinding.
As much as I advocate for playing vanilla, I can't have my windows all resized into a chaotic mess everytime I open up Morrowind :broken: . So OpenMW it is. Question is, to get as vanilla as possible, do I have to turn on any of these options? These are the default settings, as I just installed OpenMW.

Those are just the official plugins. None of them really matter that much but there's no harm in enabling them. IIRC the bitter coast sounds one is bugged in OpenMW so that one can be skipped. Also the master armorer trainer doesn't offer training without lefemme armor enabled. Dunno if OpenMW fixed that or not.

Okay, so this one is mandatory unless you just don't give a **** about balance and want to keep the game as unmodded as possible. I'm playing with the vanilla game (that is, no mods other than the official plugins), and I find those DB assassins to be definitely broken. One assassin drops thousands worth of loot, which allows me to level up effortlessly by just paying trainers, and you can easily farm them.
...But whatever, Morrowind is a broken game in terms of balancing and is best enjoyed that way so lol.

https://modding-openmw.com/lists/i-heart-vanilla/ seems to cover everything for a "basically close enough to how it was intended" experience, other than the expansion delay yes

I never knew that, the varied writing in Daggerfall's books make so much more sense now. Image

Apparently they listed the people who wrote the books along side their beta testers as the Council of Wisdom in Daggerfall's credits. Is there a list of who wrote what?

I've read that the official plugins (Not the expansion packs, I hope.) have 'dirty references' in their code that can cause the game to load the wrong data with unexpected results. From what I've read it is best to use cleaned ones provided by a community mod or not enable them. Otherwise the corruption means that anything could happen, or not. If you're only going to enable one of the official plugins, I'd recommend 'Master Index', it's worth having.

The GOG release includes these plugins, but they must be toggled on individually in the Data Files section of the launcher.

To be honest, it's hardly the most egregious thing in the game. They're admittedly quite funny, since it makes ZERO sense for them to be targetting you at the start. But when things like the Ring of the Mentor are obtained almost accidentally early on, it doesn't matter too much.

Unless you know where to look, there's not really anything worth buying early on, anyway.

I like that just about every man/mer NPC is named. It's a small detail, but it makes the world feel more real than killing "Bandit" #37.

These fuckers better be susceptible to enchanted weapons 'cause my 30 intelligence orc *** is not learning magic anytime soon. Best I can do is throw rocks at it and call it geomancy. :wizard: Take it or leave it.

You need an enchanted weapon(which, I think, should include higher tier materials?), I suspect this is information you may be able to learn somewhere ingame(?)

Fists also work if you can't get a silver weapon.

Anything but iron, steel and sticks damage ethereals and daedra: silver, glass, ebony, daedric. IIRC, silver is the cheapest and could be widely bought or looted.
Another option is to buy damage scrolls in mages guild.

Have you heard, outlander... a ship ran aground off the coast of Seyda Neen. I think it was travelling to Hla Oad. Well, I don't know for sure, but I've heard rumors they were transporting silver weaponry. But maybe it's just a rumor.

pretty sure one of the early quests you do for the Mage's guild or some **** in Balmora gives you an enchanted fire sword for dealing with em since they send you to a tomb

apparently it's from a main quest anyway so you don't even have to worry about mage guild ****

Finished the main quest which is quite short (can be finished in 15 hours I believe, if you know where to go of course). Will be doing the DLCs next, but tbh there isn't much incentive to do most of the side quests since you can be both rich and powerful easily by just following the MQ.

Devs knew that the game had **** balance and you could become unstoppable fairly quickly, so they've cranked the difficulty of the expansions to 11. I remember taking my powerful high-level Nerevarine armed with a bunch of endgame artifacts, travelling to Solsteheim, and getting my **** pushed in by the standard enemies in one of the first dungeons.

My favourite was Levitation 1 Points, and Fortify Speed X Points, since levitation costs nearly 10x the enchantment capacity of Fortify Speed. So you could make a better ring on the cheap.
