I'd argue it's more of an RPG than some mainstream games that are called RPGs nowadays.
You can go on lots of adventures with your family members. Just designate your sons/brothers/uncles as commanders and go to war. Or go on Viking raids. Or go Crusading. Or go looking for the Fountain of Youth.

You can get married to a succubus, a frog, or a zombie...what? Why are you looking at me like that?
Just like Dragon Commander, but that's an RTS/action-type hybrid.

The frog is actually a princess, the zombie has a curse that you can turn on or off, and the succubus is...a succubus. The difference is that KB:TL is fairy-tale fantasy and Dragon Commander is someone's magical realm.

Thea 1&2 are weird sandbox resource gathering RPG things, but one of the primary ways to get new bodies in them is for two characters to find a baby in a cabbage patch. The game doesn't actually track these relationships, but it's indeed possible to go adventuring with relatives if you remember they're such. In fact, in Thea 2 they start as children and it's beneficial to level them in the brief window before they grow up, so it's not uncommon to have parents aggressively striking out alongside their young charges.

Rogue Trader involves meeting very distant relatives briefly, and then dealing with dynastic squabbles within the house of your pet fish, and your butler's family rising above their station.

Every single full party creation RPG, since the player can invent whatever backstory he wants for his characters, free from developer interference.

none of that is reflected in how the game progresses so it's almost pointless

Imagine thinking enjoyment in a single player cRPG is dependent on the developer's "story".

I don't want any character input from modern developers. I might catch a disease.

Which you selected for your characters. Great full party creation adventure. Can make a whole team of family members if you want.

I didn't say enjoyment in a single player RPG is dependent on the developer's story. You're free to imagine whatever you want but if character relations aren't represented by any part of the game's mechanics or narrative then whatever you're imagining isn't a necessary part of the game.

I didn't say enjoyment in a single player RPG is dependent on the developer's story. You're free to imagine whatever you want but if character relations aren't represented by any part of the game's mechanics or narrative then whatever you're imagining isn't a necessary part of the game.
But what you are saying is that any character customization options that are not reflected by the game is invalid.

To use the wizardry example above, the gameworlds of the latter installments Guardia and Dominos, did not have traditional tolkienesque races of dwarves, elves and hobbits native to the respective planets. Yet the game still allowed the player to make such characters. Why? The game never acknowledges those races, and they will never be encountered. But it is part of a free character customization system. As I said above, a player could create two characters, give them the same surname (thus represented in the game) and appropriate voice sets, and call them bickering brother and sister. It does not matter if the narrative reflects this or not. What you are dismissing as "imagining" is a customized backstory, and that is absolutely part of the role-playing game experience.
