Yeah I watched someone play GTA San Andreas the other day, a game I loved growing up as a kid, and I was shocked. That **** glorifies nigghood gang culture and kids got to play it? Despicable. It was and probably still is fun to play, but the setting is horrendous and probably manufactured a lot of tolerance towards ******* and crime.KnightoftheWind wrote: ↑ November 9th, 2025, 07:30I want a GTA-style game where you're a vigilante gunning down *******/criminals, like an open-world Punisher of sorts. I think franchises like GTA glorify amoral behavior, even if you're consciously aware that you're playing as a scumbag. I put it in the same category as shows like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, where you're pretty much forced to root for a character who's contributing to a worse society and getting good people killed for their own self-interest. So at least a game like this, while still morally grey, would have justifiable actions in it.
Yeah, sure you're gunning people down, but don't they deserve it?. Is the city better off for your actions, or worse?. A game like this would at least present that question to you, and allow you to decide for yourself.

Playing as a good guy would conflict with the freeform mayhem aspects of the game (blowing up random cars and driving in a reckless way that gets people killed).KOS-MOS wrote: ↑ November 8th, 2025, 19:49I wonder why all these open-world driving games are always about thugs and criminals roaming around the city. Why can’t we have a game like that, but this time with a cop or someone who actually wants to make the city safer? Instead of playing a ******, we would play John the cop, arresting and killing all the ******-gangs. The more he kills them, the more the city changes to a better state.
Sure, the game can gloss over that, but I'd actually be more uncomfortable playing a game that gives a 'good guy' protag yet another slap on the wrist for running over his 500th pedestrian by accident, than playing a game where a criminal protag does psycho criminal **** and nobody makes excuses for it.
Unless you want a game that takes your behavior seriously and gives you a game over or enormous penalty any time an innocent NPC gets killed by your actions, which would encourage an extremely slow and careful playstyle in a game that's supposed to be fast-paced and fun.

Fair enough, but that would be a game that plays very differently from GTA or SR. You can't just slap a good guy coat of paint on it but keep the gameplay (which a lot of people seem to enjoy) the same.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ November 9th, 2025, 20:45yes I do want thisHavitner wrote: ↑ November 9th, 2025, 20:44Unless you want a game that takes your behavior seriously and gives you a game over or enormous penalty any time an innocent NPC gets killed by your actions, which would encourage an extremely slow and careful playstyle in a game that's supposed to be fast-paced and fun.

Well, Cyberpunk already does that. Everytime you kill an innocent npc the police spawns on you to kill you. So... that works.Havitner wrote: ↑ November 9th, 2025, 20:44Playing as a good guy would conflict with the freeform mayhem aspects of the game (blowing up random cars and driving in a reckless way that gets people killed).KOS-MOS wrote: ↑ November 8th, 2025, 19:49I wonder why all these open-world driving games are always about thugs and criminals roaming around the city. Assassin's Creed does punish you for hurting innocent bystanders. The first couple of games punished you quite heavily for it by giving you a game over after three innocents killed. People still loved playing those games.Havitner wrote: ↑ November 9th, 2025, 20:44Playing as a good guy would conflict with the freeform mayhem aspects of the game (blowing up random cars and driving in a reckless way that gets people killed).KOS-MOS wrote: ↑ November 8th, 2025, 19:49I wonder why all these open-world driving games are always about thugs and criminals roaming around the city. They didn't have cars, though, so accidentally plowing through a crowd of pedestrians because you were going too fast and couldn't make the corner wasn't a concern there.
"Oh, it all makes sense now, brother."
High chance they are protected in some way, I do not have any trust in R* be neutral about this. Would be pretty surprised if they allowed you to just mow them down.

Probably the same way you were unable to shoot certain NPCs in RDR2.

If Volition and Deepsilver weren't incompetent they could have been a real rival to GTA. Saints Row 2 I'd argue is better then anything Rockstar did but the company never followed up on it. Instead they went the super quirky meta humor route and lost the plot.

I mean how you would aim your gun and pull the trigger but Arthur won't actually shoot when you aimed at somebody the devs designated as important.Valter wrote: ↑ November 10th, 2025, 18:45do telllogincrash wrote: ↑ November 10th, 2025, 13:22Probably the same way you were unable to shoot certain NPCs in RDR2.nullSector wrote: ↑ November 10th, 2025, 12:16

I bet the derailment of the hype train once this gets released and utterly disappoints anyone who isn't a marxoid or braindead consoomer will be more fun than the game itself.
I'd even wager it's going to be a greater disappointment than the release of Cyberpunk 2077 was.
Once upon a time I imagined had we lived in a less ****** timeline there would exist a ******* based action/driving sandbox set in 1929 Weimar with degenerate gangs replaced by anarchist, monarchist, communist, Freikorps and NSDAP militias controlling specific territories in a sandbox city in the brink of a civil war and full choice of which faction to join with endings for all of them, joining the NSDAP militias obviously leading to the historical ending, but something like that is never, ever going to happen for obvious reasons.
