+/- on the numpad change movement speed. I should probably read the manual.
It is not in the manual.
Does anyone know where this wiki page is getting its text from?
https://questforglory.fandom.com/wiki/Q ... cal_Manual

[edit]
think it's the EGA version, dunno why it says VGA
There was a quick reference card in the box, with hotkeys. I think.

This is a Sierra game, any softlocks I should watch out for?
This was the first thing I searched for and didn't find anything, maybe someone here knows. I suspect QFG is probably not as unforgiving due to it being an adventure/RPG hybrid
Don't drop quest items. (duh)

Don't hack up the spore spitter plant to get the seed it's not how you solve the quest and leads to your demise.

Don't eat the acorn. (seriously, what were you thinking?)

I never softlocked myself in QfG 1-4. It's usually pretty obvious.

It's not like King's Quest V where you game over if you didn't pick up the hard to see stick, or didn't buy the pie and need it 2 hours later...

A favorite is also KQ 6 where you have to pick up a brick which is the same color as the wall it's from so it's kinda hard to see, and if you don't have it you just die hours later. Good stuff.

Like the display cable? Sorry mate, I'm old but not that old.
The original was EGA :)
I think this might be one of the earliest examples of a remake, actually?
King's Quest 1 got a VGA remake around two years earlier, in 1990.

King's Quest 1

https://www.mobygames.com/game/439/robe ... the-crown/

Oh wow, the remake was to EGA from EGA/Tandy :old:
It's a bit confusing, sorry.
Roberta Williams' King's Quest I: Quest for the Crown is a remake of King's Quest. It uses Sierra's 16-color SCI game interpreter, making it visually similar to the series' fourth installment, with more detailed EGA full-screen graphics and optional mouse support, while retaining text-based input and interaction. This version also has a musical score that supports sound cards, as opposed to the speaker-only output of the original release.

Completed.
β–Ί Show Spoiler
I played the original version as a warrior, so figured I'd do a thief for this playthrough. The game's easy, especially for the era. There isn't really any egregious moon logic. It's a lot more direct about what you need to do if you lose, and the bandit mess hall scene stood out to me most since it spelled out what you did wrong when you failed. It never felt like stats made a huge different in outcome nor was money really an issue.

I enjoyed it for the nostalgia; I have a soft spot for the amateurish style of the Sierra adventure games.

Here's an idea I had to try and capture the tone of the game via brighter colors. And before anyone pulls out their ruler, yes, the character is slightly off-center to imply the journey ahead.

So I can't move a rock because I don't have enough strength, but it increases my strength when I fail and there is no limit to how many times in a row I can use the rock. Was there a term for this genre of pretending an adventure game was an RPG?

Sounds purely simulationist to me. It's the KfG analog of going to the gym.

It's quite early & experimental.
Ironically despite never being lumped under the same hybrid(adventure/RPG) genre, it peaked with Fallout.

Immersive sim is definitely a sister genre to it, using systemic behavior instead of scripted interactions.

As they used to say in old hint books, I have 'solved' the game.

Don't have a lot to say about this one, other than while playing I kept thinking of the Bioware guy talking about the Dragon Age 2 awesome button. Except this early iteration one needs to press many buttons to figure out which one needs pressing. It's interesting how dying to learn information was a core mechanic for titles from this era, and today we have time-rewinding or Soul Reaver mechanics that provide the player the learning from dying without the game over screen. Might be interesting to discuss when "try and die" (positive, humorous) morphed into "save scumming" (negative, cheating) in the history of computer gaming.

I don't think QfG was ever meant to be brain-crushingly difficult. It tries to follow an actual path of logic besides "guess what I'm thinking" and you can usually figure most things out without having to buy the farm. There are a number of things you can miss in QfG 2 though by not being in the right place at the right time or not exploring enough. You're also on the clock in QfG 2 so you have a limited amount of time to gain skills.

Skills gains are pretty similar to later "better by doing" set ups that also cap your gains at certain places. "Click on this place to get climbing to X, click on that place to get it to Y." With picking locks you can practice on the healer's door till 40 or something and then you can use it on yourself (the original parser let you "pick nose") and doing this gets you skill if you're good enough, otherwise you ************* with a brain hemorrhage.

I like playing hybrid characters. Thief with magic is big funz and a big help too. Trying to do a fighter with magic is a mess though because most of the games won't let you use magic in combat while you have a shield.

If you intend to muddle through QfG 5, magic is OP when stacked with hybrid types.

I was trying to buy from the merchant in the inn, but it appears that instead you can buy him a meal. Not sure if this is useful or not yet, but I liked it. Image

So far just minor combat against goblins that went down after a few quick stabs, although I did find an Antwerp that bumped into me until I died. (Didn't enter combat on contact, I'm guessing this is a puzzle.)

High odds that the Bandit Leader I'm looking for is actually a women:

I'll get to it after I make some lunch. I have to manually click the little up arrow multiple times into the right spot, lots of work!

Quest for Glory - 236 of 500.webp
Making good progress, 236 of 500 score. Quest for Glory's been pretty fun so far, no moon logic. Image

The area with the spitting plants is a good place to train climbing. (Just don't take the seed until you've done all the climbing you want.)

There is a field with glowing flowers, sleeping there instead of at the inn will save a few coins every day... I've been doing it a lot and so far there hasn't been any negatives.

I almost gave up trying to speak with the fairies, but it turns out selecting them is just a bit tricky. After you dance and they gather on you, try clicking just slightly off of your character with the speak icon. They'll ignore you if you wait for them to disperse.

Had a lot of fun with this one. The art was great, no pixel hunting and all the puzzles were logical. Truly an excellent adventure game, I can see why this is considered a classic. Image

Should add some placeholder ones for future CLASSIC AG titles so you don't have to move them up so many times as the list grows.
