I like puzzle games that let you intentionally **** yourself over, but not find out about it for hours.

Tweed would buy the strategy guide and say it's not cheating because it's an official product

Didn't grab the coin? You lose.
Wanna buy a pie for a gold coin? Say no more fam!
Sure, go ahead, eat the pie.
Hope you grabbed the pixel wide locket in the nest.
What do you mean you don't stand around randomly in people's studies for ten minutes, waiting for them to go to sleep? All great heroes do that!

You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.

Bilbo bests Gollum and Smaug with puzzles
That piece of **** Bilbo had a fortunate deus-ex-machina moment with "What have I got in my pocket?", otherwise he'd be Gollum's meal.Oyster Sauce wrote: β August 17th, 2025, 03:51Bilbo bests Gollum and Smaug with puzzles![]()
Don't even get me started on the Smaug business.

I enjoy puzzles when they're just the right difficulty and actually fit into the world. When it's just some generic puzzle thrown on a door it's lame. When it's too hard it's frustrating. When it's too easy it becomes tedious. They're just way easier for a developer to get wrong than they are to get right.

Resident Evil has the best puzzles. Every corporation should use old fashioned keys, heraldic crests, and gewgaws just use the bathroom.

actually, that's the exact kind of """puzzle""" a developer would put in a game

Puzzles should always be optional and should not be made for *******. Underrail is a good example how to implement them.
The only time I hate puzzles is when they're solved by specific items that unless you know what they are, are ostensibly trash.
Bonus points if said item is actually gray quality, and shows no signs of being for anything.
Seems to be a common trend in 'open-world' """"RPG's"""""

Or when there's so many puzzle items to so many different puzzles that you can't possibly hold them all, so you start dropping random crap and can't find all the pieces later on.TKVNC wrote: β August 18th, 2025, 09:21The only time I hate puzzles is when they're solved by specific items that unless you know what they are, are ostensibly trash.

I hate puzzle items that are undroppable quest items even after you're done the quest. They're cluttering up my inventory.TKVNC wrote: β August 18th, 2025, 09:21The only time I hate puzzles is when they're solved by specific items that unless you know what they are, are ostensibly trash.

I do like difficult puzzles if they are optional and have some of the best gear in the game behind them and accessible early game. But I guess they really dont put those in games anymore if everyone has the internet.

Would have expected you to use something more patriotic, like a buck knife ground down from a single solid crystal of iron pulled out of the wall of the Grand Canyon and seasoned in the rendered fat of its first kill.rusty_shackleford wrote: β August 17th, 2025, 01:22*cuts the gordian knot using his ten-thousand folded blade of nippon steel*Tweed wrote: β August 17th, 2025, 01:21Okay, cheater.rusty_shackleford wrote: β August 17th, 2025, 01:20wrote a solver for the puzzle and solved it that way, @Tweed completely eternally btfo by problem solver logic

I like puzzle games. Especially when they have multiple solutions (Opus Magnum), or they are well-designed (The Witness).
Not sure if I would classify what Adventure Games do as puzzles. Seems closer to finding a key for a door or a game of 20 questions.

yeah I think one I had to look up last time I played it, but not sure anymore if it was an optional one in that tower. Very frustrating if you wouldnt have internet.rusty_shackleford wrote: β August 18th, 2025, 12:49

The mustache thing isn't as dumb as it seems. Their faces look nothing alike, so adding a big eye-catching trait to distract from the many small differences actually makes sense.
