Creative director of the studio says that the pitch came from a couple of Expanse superfans within the studio https://wccftech.com/the-expanse-osiris ... t-to-tell/wndrbr wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 02:25Maybe it's the show creators who are trying to piggyback off of the famous developers of party-based rpgs???
Alexander Mishulin: With all our projects, it's quite a similar story because, internally, we had a group of friends who came out with an internal pitch for the game. We discussed it. We loved it. We talked a lot about how we could make this game, how it could be different and interesting.
The Expanse IP is a very good match for us because of the stories we would like to tell. It's grounded, with many choices and consequences, and all about people and companions. The Expense is all about how humanity, while being more advanced in 300 years from now, is still very much human with all its genius traits, flaws and everything. When we had an internal pitch that we loved and we understood that we could make it happen, we started working out the business side of the details. We approached Alcon with our idea and they were as excited as we were, so the project began and we started to work on pre-production.
Makes since. Owlcat has gone record saying that a big factor in what projects they do is if the teams have a personally passion for that franchise/IP.Roguey wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 12:07Creative director of the studio says that the pitch came from a couple of Expanse superfans within the studio https://wccftech.com/the-expanse-osiris ... t-to-tell/wndrbr wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 02:25Maybe it's the show creators who are trying to piggyback off of the famous developers of party-based rpgs???Alexander Mishulin: With all our projects, it's quite a similar story because, internally, we had a group of friends who came out with an internal pitch for the game. So they chose it because they personally like it? I guess it's a better reason for players than market research or cheap license. But another question arises. Why not just establish their own new IP? Judging from devs' comments that i read here and there I guess it's just their business model which will also get them help from IP's representative writers.Roguey wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 12:07Creative director of the studio says that the pitch came from a couple of Expanse superfans within the studio https://wccftech.com/the-expanse-osiris ... t-to-tell/wndrbr wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 02:25Maybe it's the show creators who are trying to piggyback off of the famous developers of party-based rpgs???Alexander Mishulin: With all our projects, it's quite a similar story because, internally, we had a group of friends who came out with an internal pitch for the game. Because using an existing IP does a lot of the marketing lift for you.

Also because the book author and TV show producers already did a lot of the heavy lifting when it came to lore, worldbuilding, art direction et al.Tangerine wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 12:39Because using an existing IP does a lot of the marketing lift for you.

Are you 11? This will be like swtor all over again. No ******* space combat in a goddamn space game. Yes i know Mass Effect did this but this will be nothing like it.
Because other reasons don't make sense to me in this case. It's ******* Expanse. Almost no brand recognition, niche setting, highly political and divisive universe.J1M wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 16:24Are you 11? It was on Amazon. Millions of people have been exposed to the name because they advertised it when they were making seasons of it.MrTwinkls wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 17:59It's ******* Expanse. Almost no brand recognition, niche setting,
I mean, the name exposure is clearly meaningful, because I literally live under a rock and I've heard of it. I've never WATCHED any of it, because I don't own a TV, but I still know OF it.Tangerine wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 18:04It was on Amazon. Hmm, which other IP also has those properties and allowed them to expand their studio? Oh yeah, Pathfinder.MrTwinkls wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 17:59Because other reasons don't make sense to me in this case. It's ******* Expanse. Pathfinder is arguably MORE obscure than Expanse, since I know what Expanse is, despite literally living under a rock and not even owning a TV to watch it with. Meanwhile, I had never heard of Pathfinder before the games came out. But it's just D&D with the serial numbers filed off.
It was isometric crpg before BG3. Didn't matter what the setting would be, normies didn't play games of this genre at that time. Now they are making what looks like a higher budget action rpg for broader audience and they chose Expanse. Well, no point of trying to comprehend this anymore only time will tell how successful the game will be. It's not like The Expanse setting will make the game worse I just wish they would pick something more interesting.J1M wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 18:32Hmm, which other IP also has those properties and allowed them to expand their studio? As someone who really likes the Pathfinder 1e ruleset and believed that the setting had decent potential, I agree that Pathfinder only existed in the first place because it piggybacked on DnD's popularity back when 3.5 edition was in its heyday.Norfleet wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 19:46Pathfinder is arguably MORE obscure than Expanse, since I know what Expanse is, despite literally living under a rock and not even owning a TV to watch it with. Owlcat's first games banked on the tabletop fanbase who missed DnD back when it was good, so I reckon this upcoming game will be banked on the sci-fi fanbase who either watched the Expanse show for a single character or read the books for a single character. kek
Would still put them at +1 more good characters than most new releases.UltraFan123 wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 20:14As someone who really likes the Pathfinder 1e ruleset and believed that the setting had decent potential, I agree that Pathfinder only existed in the first place because it piggybacked on DnD's popularity back when 3.5 edition was in its heyday.Norfleet wrote: β June 22nd, 2025, 19:46Pathfinder is arguably MORE obscure than Expanse, since I know what Expanse is, despite literally living under a rock and not even owning a TV to watch it with. I don't know anything about The Expanse. Are these freight guards or what?

Women having a woman-moment forgetting that they're supposed to be selling this game to men.
Is that just how The Expanse is?
It is now in Owlcat adaptation.
I watched the season one trailer and it didn't really appear that way. A grimly serious "Space workers are being EXPLOITED by Earthers"
I really hope they take another crack at the dialogue writing. Frankly, I thought that the previous owlcat games had better writing, even with the usual poz elements in them.
Because I'm not paying a cent if the game forces me to listen to two annoying ******* whining to each other about inconsequental ****.
Sigh. I miss Mass Effect (before it turned to ****, anyway).

I always have a concern when mid size studies attempt to do AAA projects since 9/10 it turns to a shallow experience devoid of any substance.SoLong wrote: β August 22nd, 2025, 13:31I really hope they take another crack at the dialogue writing. Started to see some early warning signs but Iβm not ready to write the game offβ¦. Yet. However like @SoLong said there is clear drop off in quality being shown in both dialog and VA from the trailer which is strange since Owlcat has always had solid writing and VA ,not great by any standards but in todayβs gaming landscape that beats most in the market which is pathetic but a sad reality.
Hopefully this just a quick rough cut used in promotional material for building up anticipation and not an indication of tone in the final product. (probably not but hope it isnβt the case)
