Gendered Kris 1.47 β€” Deltarune

Post by GotPlatinum »

Image

Overview

Like the description says, this mod switches out the they/them pronouns for Kris with either he/him or she/her, depending on your preference. If there's any instances that I missed on the male or female versions, let me know and I'll correct it.

This was created with UndertaleModTool. As of writing, the current patch numbers for the chapters, which can be seen on the bottom right after selecting a chapter, are as follows:

Latest Patch for the Paid version: V1.04

Chapter 1: v1.40
Chapter 2: v1.46
Chapter 3: v.0.0.098
Chapter 4: v.0.0.098

Latest Patch for the Demo version and its chapters: V1.10

It is NOT recommended to use the XDelta patches or update the game if the versions are different than what's listed here. However, it should be safe to use the CSX Script regardless of patch numbers, barring any major changes to the dialogue.

The patches for 1.10 on the demo version are NOT compatible with the 1.15 version on Steam's beta branch.

My Other Mods
Batch XDelta Installation
1. (Optional) Back up the unmodified lang_en.json file (for CH1) and data.win files (for CH2-4).
2. Run the male OR female xdelta.bat file.
3. Copy and paste the game's installation path into the command prompt.
4. Press Enter. After a second or two, it should say the patches were applied successfully.
5. Enjoy!
Individual Delta Patcher Installation
1. Download the files and launch the included Delta Patcher program.
2. (Optional) Back up the unmodified lang_en.json and data.win files.
3. Copy the path to the unmodified lang_en.json /data.win file located in the game directory OR drag and drop the file into the "Original file" path.
4. Copy the path to the the XDelta patch of your choosing OR drag and drop the chosen file into the "XDelta patch" path. Make sure the part numbers on the XDelta files match the chapter numbers.
5. Click on Apply patch. If done correctly, you should see a popup saying that it was applied successfully.
6. Repeat this for the other chapters. Again, make sure the part numbers listed on the XDelta files match the chapter numbers.
6. Enjoy!
Universal File Patcher Installation
1. Download the mod files. The Universal File Patcher isn't included to keep the file size down and it can be downloaded here.
2. (Optional) Back up the unmodified lang_en.json and data.win files.
3. Launch the Universal File Patcher.
4. Select "Folder Patch," click on the file icon, and select the unmodified DELTARUNE folder.
5. Make sure that "Preserve existing files not covered by the patch" is checked. I don't know if anything bad will happen if it's unchecked, but better safe than sorry.
6. Click "Load Patch From File" and select the UFPMaleKris or UFPFemaleKris file OR copy and paste the patch string into Step 3.
7. Click on "Apply Folder Patch." If done correctly, the Status and Progress section on the bottom should say that the patch was applied successfully.
8. Enjoy!
CSX Script Installation (NOTE THAT CH1 STILL REQUIRES DELTA PATCHER):
1. Download the CSX Script and UndertaleModTool. The tool isn't included to keep the file size down and it can be downloaded here.
2. (Optional) Back up the data.win files.
3. Launch a chapter's data.win file using UndertaleModTool.
4. In the dropdown menu for "Scripts" located on the upper left, click on "Run other script..."
5. Select the GenderedKris.csx file.
6. You should get a popup window that detects the chapter and asks whether Kris should be male or female. Select whichever one you prefer.
7. If everything is done correctly, another pop-up window will appear saying that the script is applied.
8. Save the modified data.win file.
9. Repeat steps 2 to 8 for the other chapters as necessary. Refer to the Delta Patcher installation for Chapter 1 as the change there is for the lang_en.json file and not the data.win file, which is what the script is made for.
10. Enjoy!

Mod has been updated to version 1.1.

Changelog
  • Fixed a bug where the player would be softlocked upon entering the swan boat.
  • Fixed a bug where trying to take a cookie from Lancer in Chapter 2 would result in overlapping conversations.

Perfectly encapsulates how stupid 'singular they' is. If it really was singular, then the auxiliary verb wouldn't have to be changed to form a correct sentence.
Thank you for your attention to this matter!

I suspect this is less about wokism and more about indeterminacy given the possibility for it to be either.

Competent game devs had solved this problem in the 90s.

Before that, really, but who said anything about them being competent? The fact that this mod has to come in two flavors suggests there is only one string that doesn't utilize string-substitution, and therefore, that the devs aren't actually competent in this so opted for a lazy shortcut.

I think it's more likely they chose not to support gendered string substitution for ideological reasons. The implementation of string substitution is absolutely trivial with modern libraries in almost every language, but the game will usually only support substitution of pre-defined variables chosen by the game devs. (Games with scripting engines or reflection can be an exception, but are somewhat rarer.)

If they were ideological, pronoun substitution would be even more prevalent, though, since then they could substitute the appropriately ideological pronouns. The fact that they have just arbitrarily used a generic one rather than respecting the user's desired pronouns suggests laziness rather than ideology.

Saw you got banned from gamebanana, so happened to find this place, glad you were at least somewhere else so I can keep an eye on future updates once new chapters come out.

Me getting banned was my own fault. The two mods I posted there were fine according to some of the admin posts, I just got too heated with slapping negative stamps on people's comments over the Vivian mods, even after I was already gagged from stamps for a week.

A permanent ban's overkill, though.

It was over a few different comment sections. Can’t say some punishment wasn’t deserved.

That does seem a bit excessive.

Well, we have a release date for the next two chapters. ^^ I'll happily try to do a thorough test play once you've worked on them.

What's worse is the release was originally supposed to be the next three chapters, so I guess it's taking a bit longer than Toby thought it would.

It takes a lot of time and effort to create ugly pixel art.

Mod has been updated to version 1.2.

Changelog
  • Corrected a missed "they" when attempting to equip the mannequin on Noelle. Credit to EmeraldTheNinja on Gamebanana for bringing this up on the issues page.

Out of curiousity did you ever manage to get to the text files in the Chapter 1 prison break segment which had another "they" which I'm fairly sure was referring to Kris specifically, and not Kris and Ralsei? If I recall you said you couldn't access or find those for some reason.

I could access the "I can't hear them" line on gml_GlobalScript_scr_text, but even on latest version of UndertaleModTool, changing it doesn't work at all.

Mod has been updated to version 1.3 for Chapters 3 and 4. I looked through the files the best I can, but I most likely missed a few, so any help is appreciated.

Changelog
  • Updated mod for the release of Chapters 3 and 4.
  • Corrected a missed "they" in Chapter 1 when Susie says she can't hear Kris anymore. Turns out I was being a moron and didn't look at the lang_en.json file at all.

I wasn't expecting this so quick, I hope you didn't spoil yourself in doing so. I've somewhat finished my playthroughs, so I'll see about giving it a run through later in the month to help QC this. Thanks!

And yay, grats on figuring out that last (maybe) chapter 1 thing.
