Sure but others were. For your perspective though I also disagree as I don't think it was a "**** up" exactly as I do think the original Oblivion developers intended for them to be black and facegen simply failed their ambitions in that area.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 06:14I never said it was because of 'woke', I just think they ****** it up because they're ******** sweatshop chinkoids

Has any big company opened the can of worms of using AI voice work yet? I feel like that would be a big potential shitshow waiting to happen.

Also the argonians look ******** when speaking because they use the same base head mesh for all the characters — including khajit and argonians, so they could skimp on the lip syncing budget. They brag about this in one of the videos as if it was a technology success.
This **** was done as low cost as possible, it's a cashgrab.

Probably going to wait at least a few more years until it matures and is able to easily replicate emotions, emphasis, etc., Right now it's still rather early.Vergil wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 06:21Has any big company opened the can of worms of using AI voice work yet? Might not be surprised if a studio uses speech-to-speech to have a single actor/actress voice dozens/hundreds of characters tho.

Fatigue and habit to low expectations I guess, but I for one am just legit stunned a major western studio owned by MS released a 99% untouched 1-1 remaster of a 2006 game that was still full of masculine heroism and traditional values in 2025.
Just the thought of 4 millions+ 2025 players going through Uriel and Martin's early dialogues or the Knights of the Nine quest after more than a decade of any major game not having anything close to that makes me smile.
Aesthetics wise, I think they actually did a really faithful job with the environments. The NPCs indeed don't have the Oblivion feel for the most part, but no game ever looked like Oblivion in that aspect. Skyblivion won't either.
I personally always played with face mods in recent years anyway. And UI wise I also used the only one usable with a controller in recent years (NorthernUI) which made it look like Skyrim, so the new one is actually an improvement in my case as well.

lol mine doesn't look that orange. Time of the day maybe ? I'm also playing with all post proc filters and lumen disabled so might be that. I see what you mean though and might actually look for a reshade for more vibrant colors but I do that for every game these days tbh. I meant more that it felt like a really natural upgrade to me and not just random recent high quality asset swaps. The cities in particular feel really close.

It doesn't have the same spirit. Oblivion was firmly still within the afterglow of the LotR movies, it was made with the same heroic high fantasy aesthetic that you just don't see anymore.pokafox wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 06:46lol mine doesn't look that orange. It might be technically decent, but it just has a completely different aesthetic.

The graphics would be fine if this was Skyrim, which does not really have its own unique visual identity. And it's almost certainly marketed towards Skyrim fans, not fans of Oblivion.

To be fair a lot of those screenshots including the infamous first step outside the sewers are right at sun rise which is giving everything that sort of **** filter glow. There's plenty of locations that have looked vibrant though not as much as og Oblivion.
I'm just stating the facts.

Ocato, because he's probably the original Arena protagonist. If it wasn't intended, then it's a very big coincidence.DagothGeas5 wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 07:48Hope it is alright if I ask, but I was curious, do you have any favourite NPC from Oblivion rusty?rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 06:52The graphics would be fine if this was Skyrim, which does not really have its own unique visual identity. rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ March 6th, 2023, 10:31Oh, and if you care about TES lore, the guy holding the torch in that video is most likely the protagonist of Arena. Also, he sends you a letter in Morrowind & is a major character in Oblivion.
It's never spelled out exactly, but you can piece it together from the Daggerfall manual + ending of Arena, nobody else really fits the description given besides the Arena protagonist. Which would make him the only recurring TES (mainline) protagonist. The guy that Ocato replaced was, after all, the big bad guy of Arena — and Ocato was the only person in Uriel Septim's inner circle that he trusted, according to the manual.
Which, when taken together with the end of Arena…

There were sub-Saharan looking Redguards like this guy https://en.uesp.net/wiki/File:OB-npc-Khafiz.jpgVergil wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 06:21Sure but others were. From the Daggerfall user's guide
A whole gallery right here https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Redguard#GalleryRedguards: The "native" people of Hammerfell, who arrived in Tamriel in the middle of the 1st Era, more than three thousand years ago. Redguards are characterized by relatively dark skin, and wavy or curly hair.
Seems to me that they were always intended to be a mix of North and sub-Saharan Africans.
It's the main Argonian VA for Skyrim.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 05:08sounds like dollar general garrusVergil wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 05:04Argonians are completely botched in this. Strongly feels like Redguards were an attempt to be inclusive towards "African Americans," who were already featuring a lot in series & movies during the 80s & 90s.

A lot of us remark on pre-2014 instances where quota-pushing was a thing(I believe accurately most of the time) however I gotta defend the position of adding the Redguards a little bit(just a little bit)ArcaneLurker wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 17:10Strongly feels like Redguards were an attempt to be inclusive towards "African Americans," who were already featuring a lot in series & movies during the 80s & 90s.
I always thought the backstory of Redguards killing all the local Elf population of Yokuda (the left-handed Elves) and then Yokuda sinking after the fact was always some pretty meta Persia/Egypt(post-Islam)/Rhodesia/South Africa-tier storytelling.
The Orichalc tower was also in Yokuda and the towers in Elder Scrolls have this very avante garde reputation serving the integrity of Nirn and all that.
Idk if it was Ted Petersen or someone else on the original team who initially wrote that backstory for the Redguards, but whoever it was, insisted on being more clever than people give them credit for, imo.
I didn't mention quotas, on this occasion, I just think Ted/ the original creator, and Todd liked them and wanted to sell games to them.Revyscutlass wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 18:31A lot of us remark on pre-2014 instances where quota-pushing was a thing(I believe accurately most of the time) however I gotta defend the position of adding the Redguards a little bit(just a little bit)ArcaneLurker wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 17:10Strongly feels like Redguards were an attempt to be inclusive towards "African Americans," who were already featuring a lot in series & movies during the 80s & 90s.

I don't think anyone ever forced Todd to make Redguard Adventures, rather, I think he went out of his way to make it. Somehow fits in with him being the kind of guy that lies to customers and also gloats about being on the chess club.
Things are not meant to be 1 to 1 to real history, they mix things up a lot.
They gave them a hotep backstory that makes Blacks look dumb but cool & valorous, whereas Bretons & Thalmor are untrustworthy squares.

Yup. You can also hear the Skyrim VA who did the orcs doing a few orcs here as well, in order to differentiate them from the Nords.
Not entirely sure why they don't do it on EVERY NPC of a certain race. For example, the head of the Mages Guild in Chorrol? I think? is an Argonian and he's the same VA in the original - the Argonian/Khajiit one. Not the Skyrim Argonian VA.

Only thing they left about them were the traits, and the VA for when you play as one (damage taken noises, etc). It's one of the few slivers of what I remember that they left in this abomination of a $50 overhaul mod.Vergil wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 05:04Argonians are completely botched in this. New character because the last one was all wonky due to just cocking out of the cell instead of doing the tutorial.
