The romances were very popular for the audience of its time. It was considered something akin to groundbreaking. Simfags: "Wow we're starting to simulate real relationships!", shut-in nerds: "wow I get to romance my perfect angel!", coomer nerds: "wow I get to **** the hottest chicks!".

No, the cold, harsh reality is that young HUWYTE males, the primary audience for most games, have always had a propensity towards coomerism and girl-worship.
