Games over time
Games over time
I started with around 8-bit games, but basically I was playing sports, simulations, adventure, FPS and RPGs. Now, 20-30 years later, I've completely dropped sports games and, honestly, I mostly skip simulations as well. I play them occasionally, but not with the focus I used to have.

I started by playing Japanese games on the N64 (Mario Bros 64, Jet Force Gemini, Star Fox 64, Donkey Kong Country 3, Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2, Hey You Pikachu, Pokemon Snap, Mario Tennis, Clay Fighter 64, etc), and some computer games like The Phantom Menace or the early pre-Traveler's Tales Lego games like Creator, Island & 2, Lego Racers 2, Stunt Rally, Rock Raiders, Alpha Team, etc. In the late 2000s my dad got into the Korean faction war MMO Space Cowboy Online and then ACE Online/Air Rivals, so that was my first exposure to MMOs and then I started checking lots of MMOs out. I also checked out a few shooters and RTS games. Nowadays I have settled into mainly playing JRPG and visual novels, and the occasional MMO.
I am unchanging, eternal, everlasting.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

When I was much younger I liked JRPGs but outgrew them as I got older. The genre did not mature(not necessarily a bad thing), and attempts to do so were very poor. Anime as a whole tended to get much more sexualized and/or infantilized and JRPGs just followed that, mostly.
I used to like map painting games AKA grand strategy but they just bore me now.

Sports might be the only genre I have never touched in my life, unless one counts Wii Sports.1998 wrote: ↑ March 28th, 2025, 16:56I started with around 8-bit games, but basically I was playing sports, simulations, adventure, FPS and RPGs. Started very young with Commodore 64, I don't recall the other games I played but I do recall this one where you played different color 'warriors' fighting other I think only 1 on 1's ? In a Final Fight style where you cut decapitate/dismember them. I'll have to look it up to see if I can find it. Went to the NES usuals, Mario's, Kirby's. Never had a Genesis though.
Went on to Gameboy with Castlevania Belmont's Revenge, Metroid II: Return of Samus, Utima: Runes of Virtue, Wizards & Warriors: Fortress of Fear, Zelda: Link's Awakening, many others etc...
Had SNES; Drakken, Aliens vs Predators, DOOM, Mortal Kombat 1/2, Street Fighter II, NBA Jam, some football/hockey titles. Mixed bag again.
Went to PS1: Command & Conquer, Metal Gear Solid, Spyro 1, Legend of Legaia, Saga Frontier, Xenogears, Final Fantasy Factics, 5,6,7, etc. Syphon Filter, Twisted Metal 2, many more etc... mixed bag still but was leaning more towards RPG's/level'em ups now.
PS2: Same as PS1; RPG focused. Had FF12, but had some MGS games, Street Fighter 3rd Strike.
PS3: I mostly played my PS1 and PS2 on here, I don't think I had many if any at all PS3 titles other than Killzone 2 ( ? ) , Split/Second, and maybe a couple others, can't recall.
NO N64/Dreamcast/Jaguar or Gamecube.
Went on to the PC and R36S now, MMO trying and PvP related things. Mostly RPG now exclusively with some racing, sports, space-sim, party/coop stuff mixed in for when brother comes over when I am able to even play anything.

FIFA, NHL, NBA, NFL, Tennis, Racing games (NFS 1+2) all of them up until 2000. But of course, playing local with a friend. Singleplayer or online, I am just not interested in any of it.Valter wrote: ↑ March 28th, 2025, 17:20Sports might be the only genre I have never touched in my life, unless one counts Wii Sports.1998 wrote: ↑ March 28th, 2025, 16:56I started with around 8-bit games, but basically I was playing sports, simulations, adventure, FPS and RPGs. Only games I play are games I played before my mid 20s. I don't want to replay old games, I want new games, but they suck. I bring a psx/2 library, FRUA, and Thief with me everywhere, because nobody's overtaken those games.
Weirdest cracker you know.
Oh, racing games are cool.1998 wrote: ↑ March 28th, 2025, 17:29FIFA, NHL, NBA, NFL, Tennis, Racing games (NFS 1+2) all of them up until 2000. But of course, playing local with a friend. I guess I understand, playing with friends is always fun. In my case fighting games and co-ops like Monster Hunter took on that role

It was amazing back then, but I never replay it.Valter wrote: ↑ March 28th, 2025, 17:36Oh, racing games are cool.1998 wrote: ↑ March 28th, 2025, 17:29FIFA, NHL, NBA, NFL, Tennis, Racing games (NFS 1+2) all of them up until 2000. I enjoyed games of all kinds made by small teams. Fewer games are made by small teams now.
Not sure this is true. Maybe relatively speaking, but there are many games made by solo devs are mini teams.J1M wrote: ↑ March 28th, 2025, 17:54I enjoyed games of all kinds made by small teams. Fewer games are made by small teams now.

Difficult point to argue, but if I was to do so I would start by pointing out that many things that are simply activities are being sold as games today.1998 wrote: ↑ March 28th, 2025, 17:55Not sure this is true. OK, yes, there is a lot less innovation overall today, including among small teams and solo devsJ1M wrote: ↑ March 28th, 2025, 17:58Difficult point to argue, but if I was to do so I would start by pointing out that many things that are simply activities are being sold as games today.1998 wrote: ↑ March 28th, 2025, 17:55Not sure this is true. started with a second hand amiga, then some sonic, played or watched snes games in shops could never afford one back then, then got a 386 pc with games like prince of persia, gorilla bass and this
first real console was a n64 with OOC, mario card, mario 64, perfect dark, turok games. played soccer/racing games and tekken, duke nukem64, smash brothers and other multiplayer with some friends during school spend way too many hours watching others play N64/gamecube games like the Resident evil 1 remake. Next thing was the first xbox with morrowind which I played on and off for 2-3 years also fable1, played some dead or alive maybe also some others cant remember. Then got a laptop during military service, played oblvion, all c&C games until red alert 3 came out I skipped that one and all after that. After that I mostly sticked to bethesda games and modding, games like baldurs gate, deus ex, icewind dale etc. After that that dark age of camelot which I still play today. And some other mmorpgs like lotro, aion, age of conan, warhammer, eso but not for very long. Pretty much stopped playing multiplayer titles except for dark souls 3 and daoc. Certainly got into the soul franchise when the prepare to die edition came out on pc. Played bloodborne, destiny1 on the ps4 not much else. Played X2/X3. Also some pokemon on gameboy during school but only until 2nd gen.
Nowadays only new games I play really are rpgs and maybe a singleplayer shooter if I am bored like sniper elite or something like bioshock/dishonored with super powers but those are quite rare now too with all the multiplayer/drm **** releasing.

"I don't care what they tell you in College of Winterhold, Tiber Septim was a Redguard.”
First games: Super Mario Land, Earthworm Jim. Both for Gameboy.
As for systems, it went from Gameboy up to NDS for handhelds with a bit of PSP, N64 to Wii with a bit of PS3 before diving back into console gaming with PS4 and Switch. PC timeline was different from it.
Consoles: Mostly platformers, collectathons, action-adventure games, racers, card games. Rare was my favorite studio back in the days. I did get to play other studio's classics, Spyro, Crash, Rayman, by borrowing my friend's console or the titles themselves. Others were rented, i.e. Bomberman 64 and Mischief Makers.
PC: It was learning games up until Warcraft 3. The Learning Company, Humongous Entertainment and a few may recognize Ravensburger. Earliest were probably Lego Island and a Pumuckl puzzle platformer.
Carmen Sandiego, King's Quest VII, Warcraft 3 and its expansion, HoMM3, WoW, Aion, GW2, LoL and Dota 2, SC2 followed over the years. Last decade I went into Arena Shooters and hope to return to the genre.
Notable entries to (other) genres:
Having explored various genres, I went back to a selection of games, IPs - 25+ at least - and older systems. Basically Retro. The absolute majority of them has no online multiplayer focus even if they can enjoyed it via that feature. A few genres have been added over time or seen the library be extended. FPS, Survival Horror, Strategy-RPGs a la Fire Emblem, Adventure. Others were removed. Particularly MOBAs. I was picky to begin with.
The goal of mastery over gameplay mechanics hasn't changed since the early days, neither the will for completion though tamed.

I used to like complex strategies and RPGs.
Now I like roleplaying in strategies and tacticools. And sperging in Factorio.
Also, I was too small to realize it, but this thing almost gave me a vore fetish (rook->queen).

Played a lot of FPS games in the past but not anymore. The only one I still have fun with is Team Fortress 2.

It's sad how much my tastes have changed as a result of growing up and no longer having friends available for splitscreen and the death of rentals. In my perfect life I'd be playing SSX VIII, Brute Force 4: Judgements Day, and Super Smash Brothers Kerfuffle.
