Is magic good in this or should I not bother and just stick to being a normgroid sword user?
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

Also I joined the new camp exclusively because the old camp has a bunch of dudes with **** names led by a dude with a **** name and the first new camp guy I met had a celtic sounding name

Is it worth the 10 skill points to learn the sneaking skill? I want to go where I am not supposed to, but there are some shacks that seem to have some sort of Deus Ex alarm system installed to prevent access, would the sneaking skill allow me to circumvent that?

I don't agree that magic is good. Most of the time it is a lot slower than just melee. That said there is no reason "to play a mage", if you allocate you stats right (ergo fokus on either melee or ranged (not recommended) and don't waste your points on stuff like hunting (There are huge amounts of Money in the game, you don't need it. As a new camp follower you can also rob any bandit without consequences for xp and loot), lockpicking (I had ~100 lockpicks at the end, you could also savescum if you want to) and other assorted skills like sneaking are just pointless (I like acrobatics though.)

It also takes a while to become a mage, I think you can join chapter 4 at the earliest and it costs quite a bit of LP to be a mage: 10+15+20+25+30+35 (so 140 in toal), I think.

You could see in my end game screenshot that I actually learned the 6 circle of magic, which awards you with the best Armor in the game.

Not in my experience, no.

The issue with the soft skills is that they are reasonably strong in the beginning, you can use them to loot certain things you would not be able to loot otherwise later on most characters are actually afraid of you (if you are in the higher caste of your camp) and will not act (they literally look the other way) if you engage in robbing, including knocking out their allies (as long as you don't kill them)

The only reason you would want to sneak and rob are a lack of ressources, however you will soon swim in money and goods , I could give you a few pointers for the beginning if you want to in spoilers.

EDIT: you specific question was not answered: You can invade most huts in the nights when sneaking as you do not wake the inhabitants if you do but not all places are unguarded, if they see you, you will still trigger the "alarm"

I am swimming in things already, but I like collecting and exploring so I keep snooping around regardless XD Will try at night then, the times I did I still triggered the "alarm", but if it's sight based then I must have missed someone or something, because it truly seems like they have some sort of laser in front of the door (I even had some idle fun stepping in and then backing off to test this, it was truly just a little line between murder and peaceful coexistence XD )

Decided to actually see if I have the game on GoG before pirating it as I usually do. Turns out I own Gothic 1-3.
Installed it after a fiddly 30 minutes.
The controls make me want to kill myself. I would unironically rather play this on a controller than with this janky ******* control scheme.

This is what I had. Probably should have changed more so I could play the entire game one-handed.

learn acrobat instead, you'd need it since the later game has a lot of travelling, also buy running potions.

Something I am learning to do is jump close to edges, it launches me up high and I figured it would come in handy at some point or another XD rusty said this game is built around you exploiting it, so I am going all out while still not purposefully trying to break it.
One example that might be useful to others I found: I managed to break the "alarm system" without need to wait for people to sleep. At least... the secret was that *I* had to sleep.

The second they start chasing me because I entered where I shouldn't, I just rush to their bed and go to sleep. The next morning I am allowed to stay in their home and loot without a problem. Some rare cases, like Snaf the chef, rush in regardless, but it is negligible compared to the amount of looting I can do now.

I might need some help, I think I am stuck because of some bug. I was exploring the castle and looting everything in sight but, ironically on point XD , I got stuck in what I believe is the dungeon. There is a lever on a side wall, which I thought might open the cells as I wanted to loot in there as well, but instead it closed the gate and it doesn't work to open the thing back up again.
I can reload if I have to, but I would like to know if there is some way I can get out without resorting to that first.

I'm ******* glad Piranha Bytes shut down. This is one of the worst control schemes for a game I've ever had the displeasure of enduring. Even the botched ******* PC port of that redditcore Sunset Overdrive game was less clunky and it had ******* ****** 8-directional analogue stick camera control when you moved the mouse.

I'm playing with the controller mod and it's pretty great. The way the game was designed lends itself very well to a controller. If all else fails try to pirate the Switch version, it was substantially modified to work on the console and by all accounts controls well.

For anyone playing with a controller, could you tell me which are you using if you know its name and if you are using Steam or GOG's version of the game? I will continue playing with only keyboard for this run, but it would be good to know what to choose for the future.

The quest for @Oyster Sauce's magical tower continues. If he meant the collapsed tower in the old camp where the guards sleep I'm going to laugh.

Wanted to get it done, it's like a good book you just can't put down! :)

Revisiting modfix it's a take or leave kind of thing and something you need to sample for yourself to decide if you've played the game multiple times already. Half the changes are aesthetic, some are QoL, and some are attempts are improvements. I must have missed some alchemy books somewhere or something because I never got the skill high enough to make stat potions, not that it was really necessary. The big changes modfix makes are making dex necessary for thief skills and making sneaking necessary for most burglary since all guards have their awareness tuned way up. It also kills all the classic cheese and exploits. The attempt at dubbing lines is an attempt at best, mostly undone and mostly bad. All in all I still prefer it to vanilla Gothic.

Now gibs badge.

I'm guessing you have reloaded already? I don't have a solution for you, you are probably in the old camp castle dungeon? I believe it was not a switch you grabbed there, you have been captured in horny gay Jail.

Man it has been ages since i ran down there, sometimes I wish I was a boy again and could play G1 for the first time :old: :old2:

When my older brother first played a demo of Gothic I thought it was **** (just like Tomb Raider!) because it was in 3D, RPGs had been all 2d at some point, this one could not be a real one after all.

The games controls are ******* great, as soon as you switch a and d to turn instead of strafe instead. The player can control every movement very precise and the animations are extremely clear. I really do not understand what the actual issue is.

Use your Mouse and Keyboard, I can imagine aiming being a bit troublesome without the mouse.
