Gothic
Always wanted to experience this game. I have the GOG version and also a disc iso I downloaded from somewhere, maybe it's time to try it.
I read that the way to go is:
- install the base game
- if required install the latest official patch
- install the Union primary patch
- install Union
- install Ninja
- install the community patch
Am I missing some required steps here?

Don't overcomplicate things on your first run. Have it be as vanilla as possible with the quirks is my suggestion. Some basic bug fixes, alright. You can do all the other **** on subsequent runs.
I am saying this as somebody who fiddles around with his Fallout 3 run for three years now... Don't be me.

Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

All of those are for a vanilla experience as far as I can tell, it's mostly bug and script fixes, compatibility and such.Howard Crane wrote: β January 1st, 2025, 17:27What is ninja? what is union?

Union is the name of the new iteration of the old SystemPack, the link you provided also calls it the SystemPack 2.0, the Union primary patch is necessary and must be installed first because if not the Union installer will ***** about the executable not being supported or something like that. You find them here: https://worldofplayers.ru/threads/40376/
They recommend to run also the Community Patch with it, but first you have to install Ninja. The GH page calls it an extension framework to allow true modular modifications, you find it here: https://github.com/szapp/Ninja
And finally the Community Patch, another effort to fix bugs, found here: https://github.com/AmProsius/gothic-1-community-patch
This is from what I can tell the way to play vanilla+ Gothic 1 in 2025 but I could be wrong.
By the way, I used the GOG version as base for this, I have no idea if Steam requires some other stuff, probably does.

So where are you stuck then? I haven't played One in a long time, so changes are to be expected. You know what. I'm just gonna install it alongside you.
I wanted another run anyway.

Union is really great imo, fixes a lot of issues, many QoL improvements, animation improvements. The best thing that has happened to the game apart from the DX11 renderer.
To me it's worth messing with these old games to make them look a bit better and play a bit better than originally. But, i am person who really wants the first experience with a game to be as good as it can get, i am.. obsessed with it, if i'm not happy i make my own mods. I still haven't played CP2077, because i need to find time/patience to mod it heh

I only installed the latest gog version and this one: https://github.com/dosinabox/g1_steam_f ... 1.2021.exe
It runs well. Am I still missing something essential?

I'm often the same way, but I played a lot of 2077 with just a few mods (and don't think it actually NEEDS any).vurt wrote: β January 1st, 2025, 23:56I am person who really wants the first experience with a game to be as good as it can get, I am.. obsessed with it, if I'm not happy I make my own mods.

Here are the mods I actually used:

They required these function mods:

And I could have skipped a few of the ones I DID install and not lost much.
Don't obsess over this one. It's not worth it.

You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.

d3d11 renderer makes it look worse
It's a complete aesthetic shift, changes water rendering, some textures are actually no longer rendered, flickering shadows, etc.,
If you just want to try to fix compatibility issues, try using something like wine's d3d implementation. Yes, it can be used on Windows: https://fdossena.com/?p=wined3d/index.frag
I would only recommend it for DX7 games & older, Gothic is DX7. Place the dlls from the zip in the Gothic/system directory next to the game's .exe

I think it improves the look a ton + the performance improvement is pretty insane. It makes the lighting way less flat + more realistic, especially sunny weather looks great. But rainy weather is cool too, water will actually form on the ground and people will look wet + water will even run down tree trunks and walls. Really cool and unique, haven't seen that effect in any modern game actually, at least not one i can remember. Not that the effect itself would win any awards perhaps, but cool enough, adds to the immersion.
You do have various presets in the renderer to chose from too, some looks better than others + you can tweak it a lot. The water looks better too than the fake 10 FPS original water which is just annoying, imo.
As for bugs, installing Union fixes a lot of bugs for me, like textures not rendering correctly (this is especially true for people using my texture overhaul).
I have noticed flickering shadows once, but not with G2, this was with Chronicles of Myrtana, in the first town you get to. Really annoying. Haven't seen it in any other places.
I have not tried the renderer at all with Gothic 1, so i have no idea about that game, maybe its more buggy or something, no idea.

Not a surprise. They literally tell you not to use Gothic mods with COM:A for a reason. Also wait for v2.0 (coming.. soon?) to play it anyway. (More info on their Discord about these things.)vurt wrote: β January 2nd, 2025, 09:05I have noticed flickering shadows once, but not with G2, this was with Chronicles of Myrtana, in the first town you get to. It's not so bad you can't play it with mods though. The flickering happens in one place only in the town, i had a ton of union mods installed too, runs great. Yeah my full playthrough will be with 2.0 + i will likely update my CoM overhaul for 2.0.

oh, cool. just noticed someone has made a Union plugin (Hedin_Union_ChangeSkyTexture) for my G2 sky texture mod (https://www.nexusmods.com/gothic2/mods/95)... it will switch th sky texture every night and day so it's not always the same. I made a bunch of skies to chose from, but you had to select one so i was hoping eventually maybe someone could do such a thing.

I think just a collection of several fixes/patches. There is a Union.patch file in there...OGchan wrote: β January 2nd, 2025, 12:41What does that do? Are we certain the remake is still using UE5? The Nyras demo feels like ELEX. I've timestamped a convo, something about it just gives me ELEX vibes

Looks like they customized the **** out of UE5.
Usually that means good things for a game.
We'll see.
