RPGs with nonstandard timekeeping
Inspired by this little game called Rogue Space Marine
All the enemies move in real time, and the game pauses for the player's move then resumes real-time play until it's the player's turn again.
The Spooky Cave, another little roguelike. Action game, the game only moves when the player does.
https://polkm.itch.io/the-spooky-cave
I suppose this could be approximated in an action RPG that automatically pauses whenever there's no input.

Synchronous turn-based is probably the most popular.

Neither of those games probably count as an RPG tbh, but there's very few RPGs that do non-standard timekeeping

I liked frozen synapses synchronous turns and I think it would suit a RPG or Strategy game well.

Mechajammer uses simultaneous turn-based but I don't think anyone ever played it
Mechajammer uses simultaneous turn-based combat to create real-time tactics with the precision of turn-based controls.

Oh that *is* interesting it seemed to be not great so I never bothered getting it.

"RPG that blends turn-based and real-time combat."
(Timestamped at when the combat tutorial begins to see it in action)
Technically the timekeeping seems rather standard, each turn has a set length of time with simultaneous turns? Seems to get around the issue of simultaneous turns by letting you see what action the enemy is going to take

Hmmm there's definitely other games (not necessarily RPGs) like this, where time only moves when you do.rusty_shackleford wrote: β December 15th, 2024, 16:25Inspired by this little game called Rogue Space Marine

I love this sort of stop-motion during combat, there are so many beautiful effects that cannot be observed when it cannot be paused. Thank you for sharing this game!BobT wrote: β February 1st, 2025, 18:54Hmmm there's definitely other games (not necessarily RPGs) like this, where time only moves when you do.rusty_shackleford wrote: β December 15th, 2024, 16:25Inspired by this little game called Rogue Space Marine

This would probably fit really well into an action RPG, it's already sorta like what mass effect is except with pause by default instead of on demand.BobT wrote: β February 1st, 2025, 18:54Hmmm there's definitely other games (not necessarily RPGs) like this, where time only moves when you do.rusty_shackleford wrote: β December 15th, 2024, 16:25Inspired by this little game called Rogue Space Marine

One positive reviewer has over 200 hrs in it.
Weirdest cracker you know.
Was considering the above game myself, but I did notice it has Mixed reviews, and though I usually interpret that as something to be careful of, the negative reviews I saw only spoke of having bugs and the likes, which I don't really mind. It seems like an interesting game otherwise, but if anyone here has played it, I would love to know more
