My acquaintance advised holding off on doing any more until we can build a dedicated party configuration for them. Apparently there are easier ones, but the loot isn't worth the orbs.

I played a RNG/WAR and I remember all the "conventional wisdom" ***** saying that NIN was the more appropriate subjob, but every time I partied with one I would completely humiliate them on DPS, just absolutely decimating everything with Berserk+Barrage+Sharpshot. Self-tanking everything because it died too fast to do much damage. Fighting other leveling parties for the good pulls to keep the exp rolling in for my group. People were always in awe of how fast they leveled with me. I was a true Chad of FFXI. Good times.
The conventional wisdom ***** were right, but you're right too. /NIN is a terrible sub for pure dps purposes, it will always get completely crushed by any half-focused DPS sub such as /WAR or /SAM. But it gives shadows. These are huge insurance for later-level groups. Later on (say, 55+) a Barrage+Snapshot combo will do maybe 1/4 of the mob's hp tops, then you have agro that can't be taken by anyone else and the mob Screwdriver's you for a one-shot. Or Dark Spore's you for a one-shot. Or or or... whereas with shadows, your dps takes a big dip but you get to absorb what would be otherwise deadly TP moves while the Paladin frantically busts out every agro move he has available and still can't get that ****** off you until he gets a SATA.DDC wrote: ↑ October 30th, 2024, 06:08I played this to some level in late 30s or early 40s back in the day. I can probably play this week, but I don't know when exactly I will be feeling normal again. The time slot isn't an issue.

Sorry. I've recovered enough to game again (hence joining for 5-1), but I think I'm experiencing this toward FFXI. I also feel my choice of race was a mistake, but knowing that the game is designed (with thing's like Maat's Cap) to encourage maxing out everything on one character makes me feel torn on what to do.J1M wrote: ↑ November 8th, 2024, 18:35The difficulty we've had getting everyone online lately has lowered my interest in this game. Completing missions together was a nice framework for adventures and motivated a lot of other sub-goals like transportation shortcuts.
I'm willing to keep going at least long enough to do 5-2. The wiki says '55-60', so one XP party should probably be enough to get us within range. I'm not sure what exotic zones would be visitable without a bigger investment; I think most of them have to be unlocked somehow.J1M wrote: ↑ November 8th, 2024, 18:35Some things I'd like to wrap up before calling it quits:
-Level 60
-Defeat the shadow lord (5-2?)
-Collect RDM AF gear
-Sightsee the exotic zones I haven't been to yet
