Yeah, apparently the BCNMs with the good loot are no joke. @Kalarion, had you done any before? My acquaintance advised holding off on doing any more until we can build a dedicated party configuration for them. Apparently there are easier ones, but the loot isn't worth the orbs.

I played this to some level in late 30s or early 40s back in the day. I played a RNG/WAR and I remember all the "conventional wisdom" ***** saying that NIN was the more appropriate subjob, but every time I partied with one I would completely humiliate them on DPS, just absolutely decimating everything with Berserk+Barrage+Sharpshot. Self-tanking everything because it died too fast to do much damage. Fighting other leveling parties for the good pulls to keep the exp rolling in for my group. People were always in awe of how fast they leveled with me. I was a true Chad of FFXI. Good times.

Also on the subject of FFXI memories...I remember this ******* dragoon running through a zone, some nasty looking orc on his tail. He died and the ever-hilarious "lvl-down" message popped up. Except this time it was even better because he had just hit a level breakpoint and bought all new gear, and he no longer met the min-level for it so he auto-stripped naked. Some kindly WHM came up and rezzed the guy, and he meekly left (still naked) because he had sold his prior set of gear to eke out the new one. I still lmao every time I think about it.

I miss that game. It had kind of a mystique to it because it was sort of difficult and by no means guaranteed that you would hit the max level (or even come close). Parties were mandatory for leveling past the very beginning, and if you sucked they would probably dump you, and as you started to hit the mid-game you had to be a desired class or have a good rep to get groups. The world was very dangerous. None of this "social promotion" (like the modern education system) where everyone gets to max level! if you put in the time. It was actually an accomplishment to advance.

The conventional wisdom ***** were right, but you're right too. /NIN is a terrible sub for pure dps purposes, it will always get completely crushed by any half-focused DPS sub such as /WAR or /SAM. But it gives shadows. These are huge insurance for later-level groups. Later on (say, 55+) a Barrage+Snapshot combo will do maybe 1/4 of the mob's hp tops, then you have agro that can't be taken by anyone else and the mob Screwdriver's you for a one-shot. Or Dark Spore's you for a one-shot. Or or or... whereas with shadows, your dps takes a big dip but you get to absorb what would be otherwise deadly TP moves while the Paladin frantically busts out every agro move he has available and still can't get that ****** off you until he gets a SATA.

Source: I've been levelling with a Ranger lately. It's pure hell (but he is indeed absolutely amazing DPS).

Double post to say that I definitely understand the desire for DPS to sub a DPS job. Few things are more exhilarating than subbing /WAR as a high-level MNK and being able to absolutely unload with Berserker up. If you get a lucky streak, you'll be attacking with each hand, proc a double attack with both hands, then proc a kick. Five hits!! Then you smoothly segue into a Raging Fists for another 5-hit beatdown. Or later on, Asuran Fists for a full 8-hit steamroll. Or if you just want to look snazzy, some hot Dragon Kick action. GOD I love Monk.

Or a DRK/SAM. Hasso up, wail away at the mob to 1k TP, pop a WS, Meditate, pop another WS, ABS-TP, oh you just drained 800 TP from the mob! Not only did you just steal its own ability to TP move, but one more hit and... pop another WS.

This game makes later DPS fun. But each of those scenarios is a huge risk of getting insta-gibbed by the mob if it lives. And no pt wants to go through the rigamarole of raising you, then having you be dead weight for 5 minutes while rez sickness wears off. So... /NIN.

:(

I want to do mission 5 this week. Even if that means some people miss out. Could be a nice capstone for anyone losing interest in the game at this point, but it feels like it has been weeks since we've had everyone online at the same time.

Let's discuss which day works best. I'm basically available at the normal time every day.

I'm available most of the day on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Saturdays are iffy. Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday I'm only available late afternoon/evening.

@WhiteShark ?
I can probably play this week, but I don't know when exactly I will be feeling normal again. The time slot isn't an issue.

Hit 53 RDM last night and picked up my artifact boots. Time to start coffer key hunting.

EDIT: it's 54 now.

The difficulty we've had getting everyone online lately has lowered my interest in this game. Completing missions together was a nice framework for adventures and motivated a lot of other sub-goals like transportation shortcuts. Some things I'd like to wrap up before calling it quits:
-Level 60
-Defeat the shadow lord (5-2?)
-Collect RDM AF gear
-Sightsee the exotic zones I haven't been to yet

Sorry. I've recovered enough to game again (hence joining for 5-1), but I think I'm experiencing this toward FFXI. I also feel my choice of race was a mistake, but knowing that the game is designed (with thing's like Maat's Cap) to encourage maxing out everything on one character makes me feel torn on what to do.

I'm willing to keep going at least long enough to do 5-2. The wiki says '55-60', so one XP party should probably be enough to get us within range. I'm not sure what exotic zones would be visitable without a bigger investment; I think most of them have to be unlocked somehow.

The king of Sandoria has finally reclaimed the Gustaberg region!

Don't forget to run some supplies to the outpost.

EDIT: Also, reminder that daylight savings time may have adjusted when the reset is for your time zone.
