FINAL FANTASY XI GAME MANUAL

I highly recommend having a look at the manual if you're new. Though there's a tutorial miniquest you can take right after character creation, it's also easy to miss it (as I did), and it barely touches some very important game elements. The expectation seems to be that the player will have read the manual beforehand. It also contains an exhaustive list of the game's text commands, which is very useful when creating macros.

► Basic Controls

CLIENT ENHANCEMENTS
► Enhancements
► Addon Commands

ASHITA SCRIPT DOCUMENTATION

Horizon XI comes bundled with Ashita, "a free feature-rich third-party enhancement/modification for the MMORPG, Final Fantasy XI." It does many things, but what is immediately relevant is that it adds a chat command to run macros from external .txt files. If you prefer to edit your macros outside of the game, build them as scripts following the documentation above and then create simple /exec macros to run them in game.

fyi you'll probably want to use a dx8 wrapper
dxvk recently merged d8vk, so you can likely just use that without issue.
https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases

grab the latest release(dxvk-2.4.tar.gz as of posting), you'll need something like 7zip, extract the contents of the x32 directory to wherever the game's .exe file is located(where it was installed), make sure it's the actual .exe location and not the location of a launcher or something
Thank you for your attention to this matter!

This game is brutally awful.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

We are on Horizon.

Since the other guys were starting at San d'Oria at level 1, and I was resuming my level 35 dragoon/30 warrior from when I played a couple years ago, I decided to find another job to switch to. I looked at the list of advanced jobs, and Dark Knight seemed like it was going to be pretty fast and easy to unlock since it was just talking to NPCs, but hiking back and forth across Quon was pretty time consuming.

But it's over. I unlocked Dark Knight, killed the 200 mobs and traded in the Chaosbringer for the Deathbringer, used up all of my Bastok conquest points, travelled to San d'Oria, changed my citizenship and home point to there, and created our new linkshell: BandOfTheJadeTurtle. Kalarion actually suggested Green Turtle, but I thought Jade was more fantastical, and fortunately it is one letter shorter which better shows the "t" in turtle which is the last letter to be cut off when checking a character.

We are ready to begin adventuring!

While traveling to San d'Oria to change my citizenship, I saw this:

Tarus are fantastic for the caster side of DRK, and the DRK drain spells are excellent utility if you can get them to land.

Val, are those boots just leather highboots or... you know...?

Considering hopping on here. Know little to nothing about it. Watched my buddy years ago back on PS2 playing it. Currently a tank on a WOTLK private server, playing alone covering all my own professions as far as MP games go. How many you guys on it so far? and what's a max group 4..5? Class wise: I prefer to play Tanks. Paladins/Warriors, not so much Druids or hybrid stuff. Will have to look into the classes to see what would fit best or if anyone can chime in with experience on that matter, much appreciated.

Both Retail and Horizon are alive, though Retail FF11 is now like retail is like retail WoW in that levelling zones are dead and the playerbase is concentrated at endgame activities. FF11 entered maintenance mode over a decade ago, but then recently they began adding new endgame content again. As for Horizon, it is a classic level 75 era private server, which means that the game is the levelling to 75. Every zone isn't jammed packed with people even two years after Horizon's launch but I was still seeing people levelling in every zone as I ran from Bastok to San d'Oria.

Me, Finarfin, and Kalarion were on yesterday. I am a level 11 Dark Knight/dragoon, Finarfin level 8 monk, not too late for new people to join since party sync will even out the exp. Finarfin and I were on right now, but Kalarion won't be on for a bit and Vergil was playing ESO, so we decided to check that out while waiting for Kalarion.

Classix wrote: August 1st, 2024, 17:23

The max size of a levelling party is 6, but you can level up in groups smaller than that. Exp is split among the party, so the larger your party, the higher level mobs you want to fight, which means more incoming damage, which means it becomes beneficial to have a tank and a healer. Me and Finarfin just now were two manning some even level mobs. Also, there are times when you will join an 18 man alliance to progress, like during Horizon's launch when we fresh level 20s went to the Gusgen mines and had to fight those level 30 skeletons to get our subjob items, and we farmed for 3 hours until everyone got their magicked skull for the quest turn in.

The main way to tank in FF11 is to hold aggro and live. You hold aggro by either dealing the most damage (as what I was doing just now), and/or by using enmity multipliers like enmity gear (very expensive to buy from the AH), or by having the warrior job equipped (either as main or subjob) and using provoke. (Warrior can also use berserk to increase damage dealt and therefore increase aggro). But warrior is not necessarily required; there are samurai/dark knight tank setups. I also saw a 2H greatsword wielding paladin when I played during Horizon's launch. The game is not hard enough to require minmaxxing like in those build guides you see on the wiki. It is also up to the DPS players who don't want to be hit can pace out their cooldowns so they don't pull aggro.

How close are the combat, calculations, monster abilities, etc on this Horizon server to what the game launched with?

Can one solo with certain classes still (beastmaster if I recall)?

The Horizon devs rebalanced some player abilities.

I remember the Horizon devs advertised that there were new monster camps but I don't think there was a list of where were the new camps at launch.

Beastmaster should still be able to solo, though partying is more efficient. I remember during launch week typing /sea all and searching for the highest level players, and there was a party way out in the level 60s range of 4 BSTs, a PLD tank, and a WHM healer, while most of the high level population was in the level 30 range, barely hitting 40, with only a small handful of 50s. Apparently the BST party's strategy was if they overpulled, they would just run away and zone while the 4 pets had aggro and then died one by one.

Several minor changes to player combat were made (that I generally agree with):
- weaponskill stat coefficients were changed to be more sensible (I think they may have just ported WotG's coefficient overhaul to Horizon but don't quote me),
- some weaponskills were modified to be more in-line with difficulty to attain/animation. The standouts for me, as a longtime MNK fanboy, are Howling Fist (changed to be a 2-hit on a 2x, so it's actually useful) and Tornado Kick (changed to be a 2-hit on a 2.5x, now an excellent alternative to Asuran Fists, especially if you don't have capped accuracy),
- ATK and ACC scaling from stats got slightly nerfed across the board,
- attacking a monster's damage-type weakness (vice elemental-type) was nerfed, pretty hard. They're most likely targeting bird hunting groups,
- elemental weaponskills (think of things like Red Lotus Blade) had their type changed from elemental (so couldn't stack with SATA) to a new type called hybrid, allowing them (among other things?) to stack with SATA. This is huge, probably a big part of the reason for some of the other nerfs.

Some other changes of note:
- several AF pieces were given minor buffs,
- TP displays in increments of 1000 (era-appropriate would be increments of 100, but no effective change),
- several class modifications (that I generally like/agree with),
- MP recovery was made slightly less painful.

Full list of known changes can be found HERE.

All in all I was having a blast playing it a couple weeks ago, but everyone left. If you decide to pick it up let me know, I'll get back on.

I'm also playing on Nasomi.

Ok, I guess I'm officially playing this now since I didn't burn out during installation, setup, and first excursion into the outdoors. Punching mobs by myself is still pretty boring at this point (maybe always will be), but @Kalarion assures me that there's some tactical gameplay once you start grouping up to fight harder things, so I'm going to continue.

Image
My Elvaan MNK in his starter gear plus a hat and pair of caestus I bought.

I didn't realize until too late that I would end up a visual clone of Kalarion. He showed me some screenshots of his character before I made mine, so I thought I was in the clear, but they must have been of his guy on Nasomi. I must say that I still find the Elvaan's gorillo-giraffic proportions quite disturbing, but at least some armors disguise it by covering the neck. I've come around to thinking the Tarutaru are actually somewhat aesthetic, but that may just be a result of the weak competition.

Yesterday I spent a while fighting mobs outdoors and getting an orcish axe for a quest, but, because we were playing together, I hardly explored the city at all, so today I spent a while running around town and talking to NPCs. I ended up collecting six or so minor quests and learning the locations of various shops and services. I also got to hear a little lore about San D'Oria; it seems we're a pious and chivalric bunch, which pleases me.

The UI and controls are still a pain. I'm a lot more used to them now, but there's no defending them. Yesterday I had two or three cases where I got into a fight with something but somehow ended up locked on the wrong target, and boy, trying to fix that on the fly, even at the speed of FFXI's combat, was not fun. By the way, if there's a way to make it so the camera doesn't automatically start orienting itself toward the direction you're moving, let me know. I'd really rather do that all manually.

I did notice a couple oddities while talking to NPCs today. One is that some NPCs seem to have no lines at all; nothing happens when you interact with them. Not sure if that's a bug or normal. The other is that both a grocer NPC and an armorsmith NPC greeted me with a message asking what manner of weapon I was looking for. Very peculiar. I'm playing the Japanese version, so I'm wondering if those were vendors added by the Horizon devs and given 'generic' dialogue.

Welcome. Here are some maps:

Of the three nations, I prefer Bastok, since it's a bit more original (for high fantasy) being a mining colony of the kingdom that broke away and is a republic with senators and a president, and I like the uplifting military music in headquarters, and the rugged desert canyon environment. President Karst is also an interesting character, being somewhat abrasive but also someone you are confident in and want to work for. Unfortunately it only has a minority of believers left, with one small altar to the goddess hidden in an alcove of Cid's workshop, while San D'Oria and Jeuno at least have Church buildings. At least they aren't straight up pagans like Windurst.

I liked San D'Oria's wartime music when you go to the past in Retail.

For anyone sick of the incessant fireworks due to the ongoing event, this is a mod someone originally posted on the Discord server that disables it.

The zip contains a polplugins folder; extract that to the same directory that already has a polplugins folder, which is here: \Horizon XI\HorizonXI\Game
This will add a new option under Settings > Pivot in your launcher that you can enable to mute the fireworks sound effects.

I'm deliberately not using allmaps and Minimap because I want to experience getting lost. It's already happened a couple times.

EDIT: I should add, before you configure it, there will be a bunch of icons and indicators in a pile in the middle of the screen. You can click and drag the HXUI ones directly; the rest can be moved with shift+click.

Blogposting recent experiences. No screenshots, sorry.

Yesterday I went to Ghelsba Outpost and finished the Save the Children mission, which is clearly a mistranslation since there is only one child to be saved. I was very confused when attempting to enter the orcish hut triggered a prompt asking if I wanted to go to a 'Battlefield'; I was confused further still when doing so took me to an outside arena with three named orcs; and I was dismayed when I found I could not examine their levels, assuming I was toast.

I managed to pull and kill one of the side orcs by himself, but I accidentally pulled both the remaning orcs when I went to do the same on the other side. Nevertheless, I managed to kill them both and survive with 12 HP, and, after a cutscene, I was booted out of the arena victorious... only to be killed by a random nearby orc who aggro'd on me while I was zoning in. Fortunately, a nearby high level player rezzed me, and I ended up no worse for wear. After that, I began wandering around trying to figure out how to continue the mission.

During this time, I was invited to join a 'circle party'. They explained to me what it was and assured me it was 'good XP', so, since already I had Chariot Band buff active, and because I still needed to figure out what to do next in the area, I joined up. There were six of us synced to level 10. It ended up being about 30-40 XP per mob after the buff, which didn't seem that good, but we did kill things quickly, and I acquired half a dozen fire crystal stacks and 1.5 levels before my XP buff ran out and I decided to do something else. I rolled on loot once, inciting several negative emotes in my direction; apparently loot is automatically distributed if players don't roll, and it's common practice to allow the automatic distribution to take its course. I also saw a couple players say 'cg' in party chat while we farmed; when I asked what that meant, one told me it was a 'gang sign' and another said it stood for 'gum gusler' (sic). I did not pursue the matter further.

Around this time @Kalarion logged in, found out what I was doing, and assured me it was terrible XP and foolish for a circle party to run around killing EPs ('easy prey', a term from the examine function), so I thanked the party for their hospitality and left. Having still found no way to progress the mission, I looked it up and found that I was supposed to enter the same door of the same hut that had sent me to the battlefield; apparently a key drops after winning the battlefield that lets you enter the hut proper. I hadn't seen the notification regarding the key in all the excitement after the cutscene and getting killed, but, even if I had, I'm not sure it would have occurred to me to use it on the same door that had just teleported me somewhere else. Very obtuse.

Thus having finished my business in Ghelsba, I made my way down with Kalarion through the Latheine Plateau to a copse on its east side, which he assured me was an excellent grinding spot for both XP and drops. However, we found that the mobs here were also EPs to my level 14 WAR and his level 16 MNK, so, after practicing Skill Chains a couple times, we wandered away to look for harder mobs. Unfortunately, while we did find a few harder mobs here and there, we could not find a good, high-density spot, so we made our way back toward Ronfaure, intending to go fight the higher level goblins in King Ranperre's Tomb that had killed us the other day. As we proceeded west, a high level 'Battering Ram' aggro'd on me, so we had no choice but to forgo any stops and beeline for the exit.

Once we arrived back in Ronfaure, Kalarion realized it was 1 AM, so we returned to San D'Oria, where he logged off and I spent a little while learning how to cook and managing my inventory. Having sorted that out, I decided to try to finish a quest requiring lizard skins, but I found the lizards in Ghelsbar were now too low level to give me XP half the time even when alone, so I instead headed back to the Plateau, intending to proceed through it to the Dunes on the other side, where, apparently, higher level lizards reside.

As I traveled, I stumbled into a decent solo grinding spot on the west side of the Plateau, so I spent a while there killing Hornets, Goblins, and Bats. Unfortunately, I accidentally pulled aggro from a Goblin Butcher while fighting another mob and was forced to flee. I headed to what appeared on the map to be an exit to the southwest only to find that it was a dead end, and, having accidentally pulled a couple more mobs on the way there, I was run down and slain, reverting from my recently attained level 15 to level 14 and respawning at the entrance to the Plateau. Here I decided to call it quits for the night.

A couple other notes I've made from previous days:
  • A little Mithra girl addressed my character as おねえさん O-Nee-san in dialogue. I wasn't sure if this was a bug or a clever bit of writing playing on the fact that only female Mithra go off to be adventurers.
  • Much of the information for Conquest items in guard dialogues is messed up, and apparently moreso in JP than in EN. XP rings have different prices and benefits than what is shown in the dialogue, and the displayed costs for things like Warp Scrolls are completely wrong.
  • Remembering western spellings for proper nouns is very difficult because I have zero knowledge about French phonetics and they are rendered in katakana in dialogue.
