To be fair, I could see children gamedevs somehow creating a decent game. Probably nothing close to an RPG though.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ August 28th, 2024, 14:49Remember when they showed the game off and everyone was confused as to why someone is making yet another pussified purple-filled cartoon fantasy game?
This is the direct result of women in gamedev btw, they're children.

I have trouble putting my finger on exactly why I dislike, or at least don't like, the pillows setting as a whole. I'm going to disregard dumpsterfire because I can say why I hate that specific part of the setting.
It feels too… artificial, perhaps? Too high effort and the willingness to show you such. Not enough is left to the imagination, or only mentioned in passing. Everything is overly detailed and explained which makes it an obvious constructed world.
I think this connects back to what I've previously posted:

A significant amount of effort was put into answering questions that were raised, either by the development team or the 3 people Sawyer forced to pretend to be fans of the setting. "No, this isn't going to be a Skyrim-like, we had to downscale the game".
"No, you can't play as Aonuma".
"No romances, you can't kill or dismiss a party member"
"No different skill trees for different classes, sorry".
"No playable dwarves or godlikes".
No playable orlans either, just humans and elves".
"Day/night cycle won't affect the gameplay in any way".
"No, there are no minigames".
I commend them for being honest, but it's kind of a funny way to market a game.

It's self-indulgent and masturbatory. The writers are very proud of the setting and all of the lore they've created and are extremely aggressive about showing it to you, long before you've been given an interesting narrative or any other reason to care about it. Pillows displays an intensely autistic, mechanical understanding of writing and world-building.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ August 28th, 2024, 18:01I have trouble putting my finger on exactly why I dislike, or at least don't like, the pillows setting as a whole. Pillows always inundates me with abstract cultures that I'm constantly bored of before they've even started.
Why? Exactly the reason you stated I think but also it's Sawyer. I know that sounds cheap but he's autistic and sucks the fun out of everything. He made things that could of been interesting - boring and ****.

it also doesn't help that the entire setting boils down to predictably boring 'gods are fake' modern deconstruction crap. the attitude towards making every attribute "un-dumpable" reflects the attitude towards the settingl.
Have at it, I've seen no indication there's widespread demoralization.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ August 28th, 2024, 18:46Do they, though? I'm sure if I go search through their social media I'll find endless references to things like "impostor syndrome" or being depressed

Doesn't help that they go to extreme lengths to explain cultures instead of just going "these are fish people who have a caste system", they have to show you every inch of it. Some of this is due to it being an obvious standin for hitting you in the face with real world politics of how "akshually the hu-white people were the bad ones, look at the noble savages!"Shillitron wrote: ↑ August 28th, 2024, 18:49Pillows always inundates me with abstract cultures that I'm constantly bored of before they've even started.

That's quite a good observation, and it tracks with how streaming services like Netflix push for quantity of content.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ August 28th, 2024, 22:47It's gamepass slop, these developers are being paid to make mediocre shovelware, doesn't matter
Only problem is that the competency crisis has reached such levels of magnitude that none of the dev studios they have bought are even capable of ******** out slop without significant delays and going over budget.

Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity were mediocre at best. There were some really good gameplay ideas in there, like the Tyranny spell crafting or the in-dialogue links that popped up codex entries on hover, but the writing is fantasy slop with faggotry (I'm including all the nigs and gays and feminism in that word) generously sprinkled throughout.Finarfin wrote: ↑ August 28th, 2024, 10:09>No mention of Alpha Protocol, no mention of Tyranny, no mention of Pillars of Eternity, no mention of Pentiment nor Mask of the Betrayer, even Grounded.

Stick of Truth was a competent South Park reskin of Paper Mario RPG.
"Oh, it all makes sense now, brother."
I hated that part. Optional or not, I am playing a game, not speed running some wiki articles. If your game needs that to intro lore or create background, you are doing something wrong.logincrash wrote: ↑ August 29th, 2024, 04:44Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity were mediocre at best. *****, you're playing an RPG with entirely text-based dialogue. Reading is kinda important for that.1998 wrote: ↑ August 29th, 2024, 04:51I hated that part. Alpha protocol is a 6/10 game, Tyranny is a unfinished prototype -- not a game, Pillars of Eternity is goyslop for *******, Pentiment is goyslop for ******* whose only purpose of existing is to humiliate europeans, I did not play Neverwinter Nights and Grounded but it seems like nobody else has either considering they have zero discussions about them on any forums. Anyone defending Obsidian or shilling for it in 2024 should honestly just kill themselves, you mentioned on this gay forum that you struggle with self respect and confidence, maybe it's because you play obsidian games. Gamer pro tip: Delete them from your OS and you will regain your masculinity.Finarfin wrote: ↑ August 28th, 2024, 10:09>No mention of Alpha Protocol, no mention of Tyranny, no mention of Pillars of Eternity, no mention of Pentiment nor Mask of the Betrayer, even Grounded.Schizoid1488 wrote: ↑ August 28th, 2024, 08:51Obsidian has made a total of 16 games in the last 20 years according to wikipedia, only three were good and worth playing, The Sith Lords, New Vegas, and Stick of the Truth. When is it time to just give up? It's time to move on. Some game devs and companies just need to be left in the past. It's 2024. Larian, CDPR, Warhorse, Owlcat have made companies like BioWare and Obsidian obsolete.
It's time for a big change for these companies, fire everyone working currently and hire new devs and pay them mere pennies. I think it's obvious that old heads like Sawyer and his croons have nothing left to give, they are husks now. Wrap it up. It's about time people start treating RPG devs like they treat football or basketball players, when they are nearing early 30s and no longer ready to spend 24/7 grinding it's time to fire them.

Games like Mass Effect, The Witcher, Dragon Age will just put that stuff in a Codex entry you'll have to click through to if you want to read it. This is just a convenience that saves clicks.1998 wrote: ↑ August 29th, 2024, 04:51I hated that part. Optional or not, I am playing a game, not speed running some wiki articles. Codex entries are much less intrusive, easier to ignore. Yes, I don't have to click on every entry in the same way I don't have to loot every container but once the option is there, it's hard to ignore.Roguey wrote: ↑ August 29th, 2024, 11:07Games like Mass Effect, The Witcher, Dragon Age will just put that stuff in a Codex entry you'll have to click through to if you want to read it. Mask of the Betrayer is a well-written story stuck on a ****** game engine.
Everything else I pretty much agree with, especially Pentiment. Playing that makes you about as gay as the creeps that enjoy Life is Strange.
Obsidian used to be known for well-written stories and awful gameplay. They kicked out all the talented (male, heterosexual) writers and now just make slop.
