Avowed, a TOW-like game from Obsidian
It's Unreal FFS.. you can't **** it up, the engine is hardcoded to have good lighting and post processing - I'm almost impressed at how inept they are.

If I wanted to do gamedev stuff, these volunteer projects are where I'd spend the effort. Regardless if they ever see day, dicking around in the cs and blender is fun.
These projects have more ******** than roguey's browser history dawgmaidenhaver wrote: ↑ June 11th, 2024, 00:02If I wanted to do gamedev stuff, these volunteer projects are where I'd spend the effort. Regardless if they ever see day, dicking around in the cs and blender is fun.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

Reject your retarded-wing political programming and learn to think.
If you can.

I’m hearing that Obsidian is about to announce an Avowed delay to early 2025," said Warren. "Obsidian accidentally revealed earlier this year that it was targeting a November launch, but with Xbox exclusive S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 delayed to November, things are getting stacked for Xbox games in the all-important holiday season.
"I understand Avowed is in good shape, this is more a matter of wanting to give the game breathing room outside of a very busy period for Xbox Game Pass. We’re still waiting to see if Bethesda’s Indiana Jones game manages to make its planned December release, too."

It's time for a big change for these companies, fire everyone working currently and hire new devs and pay them mere pennies. I think it's obvious that old heads like Sawyer and his croons have nothing left to give, they are husks now. Wrap it up. It's about time people start treating RPG devs like they treat football or basketball players, when they are nearing early 30s and no longer ready to spend 24/7 grinding it's time to fire them.

When is it time to just give up? It's time to move on. Some game devs and companies just need to be left in the past. It's 2024. Larian, CDPR, Warhorse, Owlcat have made companies like BioWare and Obsidian obsolete.

Remember how, ages ago, Obsidian's engineers were proficient enough to learn how to use someone else's engine and develop games in less than two years (kotor 2, fnv)? Judging by how long it takes for them to release Avowed, current day Obsidian can't even learn how to use Unreal engine, even though it's heavy documented and was deliberately made to be idiot-proof.
And now they are porting their project to a new version of the engine. Nothing good will come out of this.
Source: Armchair *** who has never actually downloaded UE4/5
Opinion invalidated.
UE4/5 is stupidly difficult and overcomplicated to get anything done in with how much is buried in the UI and how many hidden rules and requirements of external knowledge there are with it. To where the compiler's debugger is useless. Unity is a more barebones and stripped down copy of Unreal but everything is done in C++ code. Unreal is more friendly to artists and hobbyists because you learn all the different variables neatly listed on the side of the screen in blueprints versus "just learn programming bro!" and the slew of shovelware slop from Unity.
For example, "object is pending kill". Everyone in the dev community will play dumb and act like its a trade secret to figure out how to deal with that. Turns out there's something called a "garbage collector" that is NOT ever mentioned in the documentation that you are supposed to automagically send a destroyed actor to. Except there's no actual way to do that with blueprints/visual scripting and its some kind of automatic process. Except it isn't and the option to mark a "destroyed" actor for garbage collection is actually a hidden checkmark box buried deep in the UI somewhere that does not show up in the search bar in the visual scripting menu. But you wouldn't know that just starting out.
>inb4 "i did an internet search" Engine Documentation was dogshit and UE3 lawsuit level back when I first started with the engine as a hobbyist in 2021. If the documentation wasn't vague as ****, it was some "buy my book" scammer encouraging everyone to make asset flips and shilling a pisscord to lure in new people asking questions about the engine and ban them.
Compared to the odyssey engine where even a newfag like me can just make + rig a model in blender, add it to a NPC shop, and have it usable in game within a day or two like I did with my Sith Commando armor mod for Kotor 2. (no its not a sith going commando, its an N7 armor inspired variant). No need to **** around with data tables, animation graphs, "muh 1:1 bone structure" and all this other ****. Just directly retarget the mesh animations to the player skeleton and you're good.
Still looks like tropical Skyrim. They should just make lots of romanceable NPCs. Easy way to get the BG3 crowd to "love" this.

yeah it is disappointing that the modding scene for that would rather make skimpy BDSM outfits and other cringe instead of more cool armor and places to adventure to.Finarfin wrote: ↑ August 28th, 2024, 13:38I'd rather have no romances than have romances that would attract the bg3 crowdStatesman wrote: ↑ August 28th, 2024, 13:04Still looks like tropical Skyrim. For a split second.. because Dragon Age Failguard looks so ******* awful by comparison this game was almost passable or dare I say... looking good?
It really looked like a proper Deadfire Skyrim clone for the first 2 minutes or so.
Then
- I remembered the previous videos have essentially killed any excitement of explorartion
- I remembered the previous videos have shown how awful character development is
- I remembered the Companions are trash
- I saw the spider combat
Shame.
It looks like another game in which seemingly every shortfall comes down to bad taste on the part of the developers, standard Obsidian.Shillitron wrote: ↑ August 28th, 2024, 14:31For a split second.. because Dragon Age Failguard looks so ******* awful by comparison this game was almost passable or dare I say... looking good?

I wonder if they ever feel pathetic for being incapable of reproducing 1/10th what a bunch of slavs in middle-of-nowhere eastern europe were capable of doing without having microsoftdollarswndrbr wrote: ↑ February 6th, 2024, 01:26Pretty much every newspiece from Obsidian regarding this game has been negative thus far.
"No, this isn't going to be a Skyrim-like, we had to downscale the game".
"No, you can't play as Aonuma".
"No romances, you can't kill or dismiss a party member"
"No different skill trees for different classes, sorry".
"No playable dwarves or godlikes".
No playable orlans either, just humans and elves".
"Day/night cycle won't affect the gameplay in any way".
"No, there are no minigames".
I commend them for being honest, but it's kind of a funny way to market a game.

KCD is undeniably the better game, I just don't like the setting as much as fantasy settings.

Maybe. I haven’t played enough KCD to decide. But I don’t think anything matches Skyrim in terms of art style, music, scale, and interactivity. Except maybe Morrowind, which I’ll DEFINITELY play eventually…rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ August 28th, 2024, 15:06KCD is undeniably the better game, I just don't like the setting as much as fantasy settings.![]()
