Watched a Japanese video about this fiasco and he pointed out a few more things. Ubisoft says they had experts on Japan when designing the setting, but it's messed up in ways that should have been caught if they had even a single expert:
  • All at the same time, there are:
    • cherry blossoms blooming (March, April);
    • farmers transferring rice sprouts to the fields (May, June); and
    • peasants commenting on the excellent harvest (September).
  • It's the 16th century but there are items that would not appear in Japan until the 19th century.
  • The tatami mats are square instead of rectangular.
  • Beheadings are portrayed as commonplace.
Ubisoft apparently also said in an interview with Famitu that they chose Yasuke because they wanted a protagonist who could become 'our eyes', calling him 'our samurai', implying two things: that a Japanese protagonist would be completely unrelateable, and that Japanese players aren't the target audience. Famitu later quietly deleted that part of the interview, inadvertently confirming this interpretation.

Furthermore, though this may have already been covered, Thomas Lockley apparently edited Wikipedia to claim there was a division of 8,000 blacks who fought during the warring states period and that Yasuke's arrival in Japan was the catalyst for a brisk trade in black slaves among the Japanese nobility, who (according to Lockley) considered owning a black slave to be a status symbol.

Ubisoft has always been very gender fluid when it comes to 'historical accuracy' of their games.

Today they announce thay they recreated an ancient egyptian language with historic authenticity.

Tomorrow they will say 'our games are only fiction and have nothing to do with history'.

It came up on IRC again what Japanese sources actually have to say about Yasuke, and, as far as I can find, this is it:
The Nobunaga Chronicle wrote:
February 23rd. From the Christian country comes a black. He appears 26 or 27 years old. The blackness of his whole body is like that of an ox. He is healthy and fit. Furthermore, he is strong, surpassing ten men. The priest brought him and came to pay his respects [to Nobunaga].
Diary of Ietada wrote:
Lord [Nobunaga] brings with him the black man whom he retains and was given him by a deus priest. [The black man's] body is like ink, his height is six shaku and two bu 5' 11.5" / 1.82m, and his name is called Yasuke.
Everything else comes from Jesuit sources or Lockley's fabrications.

EDIT: Adding the original Japanese text for my own future reference because the latter was hard to find:

So shares are going down now.

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/ubisofts- ... go-private
WSJ reports that Juraj Krupa of AJ Investments and Partners has written an open letter to the board outlining its "deep dissatisfaction with the current performance and strategic direction of the company."

Consequently, the Slovakian hedge fund is calling for CEO Yves Guillemot and the board to "take Ubisoft private or allow it to sell to strategic investor."

Looks like Ubisoft days coasting by using Ctrl C in Assassin Creed for all the games are over.

Maybe they have to [ gasp] make a half decent game for once.

The talented devs left long ago.
Not that the devs were ever very talented.
Ubisoft was always mid, with meh IPs.

Splinter Cell was pretty good, though.

One day I'm gonna make a video game set in medieval Mali or Ethiopia, take a randomass White guy that was just passing by during that time period, and make him the protagonist of the game.

When libtards start bitching I'm just gonna tell them how much I respect African history but at the end the creative choice is mine. lol

"UbiGay", fits the slang of being major **** and literally *** oriented.

Make it stick and any game they make will be immediately identified as *** garbage, oops I mean "Inclusive".
