Flint: Treasure of Oblivion, TB Pirate RPG

Post by 1998 »

This already releases on the 24th October. Full release, no EA. For that they haven't shown much. It could be OK for all its shown right now. There is a distinct “lack” of diversity, there are 1-2 females running around but thats it so far. They do call their world an historically-inspired piracy world, which is a bit sus. Comic-book narrative also looks like ***.

I hate when CRPGs show you dice rolls unless it's an actual adaptation of a dice-based game.

That voiceover is horrible.

I also think taking the names of your main characters directly from Treasure Island shows a lack of imagination. Although I would like it if the Captain Flint in this game meets someone who names a parrot after him to mock him.

For a gameplay/tactical making-of this is pretty shallow. They have included dice roll, because RPG, major challenge was to find alternatives to fireballs. They are talking about 15v15 battles, that was at least something substantial. Not sure if I like it thought, the maps seem all very small and narrow for such a large crowd and it probably will drag on forever.

I looked at their previous updates yesterday. I'm not convinced this is actually an rpg. I think its just a series of tactical battles with maybe some character building in between. Devs answered someone's question and "choices" in the Steam forum and said there aren't any.

Also, they had a feature on "the women of Flint" and they all look mannish.

And, yes, they have one of rusty's favorite UI features - on screen dice rolls.

It probably will have at most exploration like in Naheulbeuk or King Arthur. Also probably not sea battles...still curious how it will turn out.

Given there's been no mention of sea battles at all, I think it's safe to say they won't be included. And be careful what you wish for - you could end up with something like Deadfire's sea battles.

That's kinda funny, because if there's any group that actually WAS diverse, it was pirates, so it would be absolutely legitimate to have diversity in a crew of pirates.

You are talking about a different kind of diversity, not modern day libtard diversity. They would have included for sure a strong, independent female as a captain.

It's just funny how nobody ever seems to push for diversity in pirates despite the fact that pirates were actually very diverse, even including women, even in high-ranking roles if you move beyond the Caribbean, because at the end of the day, you're still a violent criminal.

Not really honestly. If there was a ****** on a ship he was likely a slave either being put to work by the pirates or stored as cargo to be sold. Pretty much every instance of "female pirate" is just some ***** the captain took along with him and then played the "Im just a girl tee hee Im pregnant you can't kill me" card whenever they finally got caught.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

Pirates were actually against slavery, and would pillage slave ships and liberate the cargo, who would, of course, often then become pirates, so black pirates were fairly common.

Well, if we're talking about the Caribbean specifically, there were several, although the one you were thinking of would obviously seem to fit that bill. But on the other hand, they were the only ones that fought back when they finally got raided by the cops. But outside the Caribbean, the list certainly grows longer and more impressive. So, wouldn't rule it out. Piracy is a fairly meritocratic business.

This is getting trashed on Steam:

Three hour time limit in the demo
Sluggish response to inputs
Weird controls (hold mouse to confirm actions)
Lots of technical bugs
Confirmed to not be an rpg

I don't think this is going to release next week.

Release date is now 14th Nov according to their Steam page, no news about that though. Very promising indeed.

New video, timestamped to the gameplay preview

There seems to be at least some exploration outside combat including side quests. It's probably a bit like Naheulbeuk in that regard.

New video about range and melee weapons

Looks like each weapon has 7 stats.

Image

Seems to overcomplicate things a bit, but weapons also come with additional effects. Maybe itemization isn't completely a mess.

I know we are all just too excited about today's release.

Didn't watch the review, but game is only 10h long. I don't mind shorter RPGs but ****, I am talking 30h, 10 is way too short.

I would like a 10 hour game if it had tremendous replayability. This doesn't look like it does. Plus, with how bad the demo was, I just don't have hope they're going to make enough improvements to make it worth spending time on.

How much is it? If it’s 20 dollars that wouldn’t be to bad of a value proposition for the low hour count.

Probably would have played it, but 10h seems kinda pointless.

Its currently peaking at ~90 players and sitting at 50% (6 reviews total)

I like tactical RPGs well enough but I don't like them when they're too difficult so 10 hours seems fair to me. Unfortunately https://steamcommunity.com/app/2366130/ ... 019796285/
The game has one well-balanced difficulty, crafted for everyone to enjoy the adventure!
While this approach may be Rusty-approved, I'm out.

When I first read about the 10h I checked out some written reviews to find the source of it. None mentioned it, one actually gave it a 4/5 or whatever for value. Guess even that game most journos didn't bother to finish.

Didn't dig deep enough https://www.shacknews.com/article/14256 ... ion-review
While it has a few new and interesting ideas at play within its combat system and fresh take on storytelling through the comic book style, it struggled to land with me during my roughly 11-hour playthrough.
