And I'm probably setting the bar way higher than it needs to be to be better than Outerworlds, a lot of mediocre RPGs released since then too.

Tim Cain says there are no bad games only different preferences and budgets... Agree? Disagree?
Tim Cain is wrong. Obviously, he has never seen Big Rigs.

When all the women are 3's, a 6 starts to look like a 10. The bar is so low that we grasp at even the slightest result as being "better". It is an unfortunate state in the world today.rusty_shackleford wrote: β May 15th, 2024, 07:21released 2019Cogemeister wrote: β May 15th, 2024, 07:11just that in recent years Outer Worlds is a better RPG than many other games,

I agree with the general sentiment, but even at release people were ******** on Outer Worlds, citing the ******** story, the overabundance of ***** and the boring gameplay.Xenich wrote: β May 15th, 2024, 13:15When all the women are 3's, a 6 starts to look like a 10. People were expecting New Vegas in space, and instead they got dumbed down Skyrim with a moronic Marxist narrative.
It's neither Skyrim (not open world) nor Marxist, just bog-standard liberal. The good ending requires trusting in the abilities of Great Minds to pull you through a crisis, that's antithetical to the belief that everyone is equal and equally capable.gerey wrote: β May 15th, 2024, 13:24People were expecting New Vegas in space, and instead they got dumbed down Skyrim with a moronic Marxist narrative.

Already a very silly premise.
Yes, this quest might have soured me in the game (I dropped it about 5 hours later).

Forspoken is objectively a bad game in every aspect. Refuted.

Haven't played it, but this sounds more like "trust the experts" than some sort of based realism.Roguey wrote: β May 15th, 2024, 13:43The good ending requires trusting in the abilities of Great Minds to pull you through a crisis, that's antithetical to the belief that everyone is equal and equally capable.

There are no bad games, only bad game developers.

Outer Worlds is one of the most mediocre games I've ever played. It's not the worst game but it might be the most boring.Cogemeister wrote: β May 15th, 2024, 07:47I should have been more specific, I mainly mean AAA RPGs, also I could not get myself to like Greedfall whatsoever.
For comparison, I found ~30 hours of fun in starfield. That's how tolerable I am despite my constant bitching and whining.
Outer Worlds when you wake up and the first person you meet is Rick from Rick and Morty.. I'm already sighing and regretting life - by the time you hit the first planet and start engaging in combat (~10 minutes) it becomes 100% apparent what this game is - it's all downhill from there.
If you are actually enjoying this game running around Boom Boom Lasering Aliens and Non-Descript "Bandits", you are literally smooth brained.

"...fat ballerinas..."
But fat ballerinas can sort of dance well too though. (They just can't jump very high.) Just like sumo wrestlers can actually run very fast. (They just can't jump very high.)
So fat ballerinas is an imperfect example. Fat people might still be good at everything else. They're just also fat.
Whereas bad games tend to be bad in every respect, except maybe for one. Maybe not even one.
Which, by the way, is how one could dispute the "well, it's just different preferences" argument. Most bad games are bad according to nearly all preferences.
That argument (Tim Cain et al) conjectures that one of the large majorities like these "bad" games, while you just happen to be in the tiny minority that doesn't. Hence you think it is "bad", but it's not; you don't like it.
However, in fact, it's more like you are in the large majority that doesn't like these games, which are bad in every respect except one, and some people who like them are in a tiny minority that has lexicographic preferences for that one thing the game is good at; and, rather, consumers have too little impact, with their money on what gets made. Even if they have plenty of impact on what loses money, after being made, and studio closures. (Not as paradoxical as it seems. The currently enormous relative cost of making games creates a chicken and egg problem...) Most people want to play games but can't buy what doesn't exist. They try playing what they can buy at all. (There are further subtleties in this market.)
To make the proper comparison, you'll need to compare bad games to people who are unbelievably obese and incredibly stupid and totally crazy and utterly illiterate BUT they have the best furby collection in the world, or the best tongue piercing, or something like that.

The tiny minority are the games journalists and if you put some ****** millennial reddit humor in the game and put in a super easy mode with a lot of cutscenes so they can mostly watch it and complete it in 10 hours they will say it's the best game ever made. The majority are low iq ea sports games consumers who spend on micro transactions for better players. The other minority is us, people who remember when single player games used to be made that were fun and engaging and not made for *******.NotAI wrote: β May 16th, 2024, 12:27"...fat ballerinas..."

What about the typical Final Fantasy?
It's like 40 hours average length. 75% cutscenes: check.
Do you like it?
I sort of like it...though I can't really figure out what's the exact plot...not very clear what is happening and why and what for...like in Rebirth. Confusing...but not bad.
So there are okay-ish ways to make games that are basically very long fantasy films.
