The conclusion to the 400+ hour long visual novel is that

a bird girl introduced in the last 10 hours (the last 2.5% of the story!) was responsible for everything that went wrong. She became mopey and decided to wipe out all life in the rest of the universe. She has been assaulting the world that the game has been taking place on for 14,000 years, resulting in mankind's Fall, with death entering the world and mankind losing their immortality and their command over animals, and men going to war with each other and being eaten by monsters, and untold murder and wars and destruction over millennia. She is the greatest mass murderer in the history of the franchise, but because she looks like a cute anime girl she not only lives but gets off scot free in the end, and you can summon her a pet.
That was what took you out?
I already checked out when the ancient genocide was caused by

an insane hippie scientist who was upset about the poor widdle animals in his lab being killed. He deliberately caused the apocalypse after creating the annoying blue bird girl and our oh-so-benevolent goddess also deliberately caused the apocalypse because the ancient people were too powerful and ****.
After all that I was just annoyed I couldn't join team "Destroy the new world, restore the old".

I miss the days I would be disappointed by the plot. These days I am so disappointed to find woke ******** and forced "quotas to meet" that I would much rather take a bad twist and actually have a game on my hands than realize I am left with an empty shell
This to say, any bad gaming memory of mine is now also rather nostalgic.

the question is: what is worse, being surprised a jap game has terrible writing, or realizing you are a disgusting weeb?
No one in the west wants to actually be japanese, least of all weebs. How the **** would these people ever get the work ethic required for that?
Also, re: terrible writing. Have you seen any western movie or video game lately? At least japanese terribleness isn't so omnipresent in its games that you can predict it by seeing if your day ends in y.

Venat mass murdering her own people and the narrative presenting her as a hero was incredible. FFXIV became hypocritical. The heroes constantly tell villains "you have to accept your loss and move on from the past!" and then the heroes will bend over backwards to save their people. G'raha went back in time after the 8th calamity. And the latest arc began when the Scions and Vytra jumped into the Void and began slaughtering Voidsent willy nilly. From our perspective they were not truly alive and did not deserve any consideration. Just like the Sundered to the Unsundered! Zodiark has far more right to be called the "Will of the Star" than Hydaelyn. Venat called herself the will of the star when she only had 13 people on her side. She is an usurper. Hien floods his country's capital city, killing many innocents like painters or servants or chefs and so forth (not just Garlean soldiers), but he's treated as a hero, but when Fordola orders an artillery barrage on a tower that has become occupied by the enemy she is labelled as evil. And so on. It's ridiculous.
