rpgs where you can bash-open doors

Post by wndrbr »

Are there any rpgs (or sort-of rpgs) where you can blow up/bash doors?

Infinity engine games allow you to force doors, FO1-2 and fo2's fanmade expansions allow you to blow up doors, Arcanum has explosives and Disintegrate spell. ATOM RPG, being a Fallout clone, lets you use force to open doors. Ultima series. Divinity series borrows a lot design decisions from Ultima series, including a high level of environmental interactivity. Deus ex and the various off-shots (i.e. immersive sims) allow you to break-open doors.

Anything else? Daggerfall? M&M? Wasteland?

Breaking down doors is the kind of freedom that most rpgs today don't provide.

Depending on the definition of RPG, most survival games do allow it. I"m playing 7 Days to die with Sorcery mod, I know that many people don't consider it an rpg but it has more rpg elements than most AAA modern games.

Daggerfall allow you to break any door.

IDK why but I'm not remembering any other example.

You've given me flashbacks of spending 5 minutes trying to break down a door in KotOR

Jagged Alliance 2, there's like four or five different ways to open them too.

Silent Storm has destructible environments so you can shoot out the doors, floorboards etc. Dont know if I'd call it an RPG.
Fear and Hunger - either use an explosive item to blow them open, try to bash them down with your weapon (you get one attack and fail if you dont do enough damage), or use the lockpicks if you're chose the class/skill, or find the key.
Caves of Qud, I think, had ways to destroy them.
Brigand: Oaxaca lets you bash down doors with melee weapons if you have the requisite strength, but this I gleaned from watching a vid on the game and not from playing, so I dont know how frequent this is.

"Beneath Apple Manor is one of the earliest examples of what now is usually termed a "roguelike" game. It's a primitive RPG (originally released on the Apple II platform in 1978!) " - Taylor Swift

Being able to get past a locked door in ways other than using a key/lockpicking is the TRVE hallmark of an RPG.

You could break wooden doors in Dungeon Master and its sequel Chaos Strikes Back.

Since always, swing your weapon at the door and it will go SMASH SMASH SMASH and the guards will say HALT HALT HALT!

The fact you can't assign the whole party onto the door to speed up the process makes me seethe so bad.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

No, the true hallmark of an rpg game is whether or not you can kill every NPC.

Rayman 2. It has collectibles, so it's an RPG.

Kenshi has this, more or less. You technically can break chests too, but you need such a high Strength score that it's not really practical. But you can in fact bash open doors.

It's a Sandbox, sure, but still an RPG.

Grimoire lets you force open a locked door by selecting two characters in the party and passing a strength test.

You can see the decline in TES series in this apect.
Daggerfall -> can bash doors, use spells or lockpick
Morrowind -> can use spells or lockpick
Skyrim -> can only lockpick

I wonder what opening closed doors will degrade to in the "next" "Elder Scrolls".

The ability to bash doors tends to cause me to bash EVERY door, on the grounds that a bashed door means that I've checked this place off. Same with chests. I bash every chest, just to mark it as "looted". I will pick the lock to avoid destroying the contents, loot it, and then bash the empty chest.
