BG3 immersion breaking books

Originally posted that in the general BG3 thread, but reading the previous page I thought I'd post it here. So finally made it in Act 3 and won't comment about the lag fest, and was pleasantly surprised to finally find an Ilmater temple, only to be greeted with this on the Altar:





Do you think that kind of snarky little backhanded jokes they put here and there or more generally anything that feels like an unrequested immersion breaking social commentary from the writers enter the scope of your mod ?

Hmm wonder if that is really intentional or Larian again getting their lore wrong
I mean there has been Canon with Ilmater Worshippers self flaggelating but it's not a major thing.

There was indeed an offshoot of the Ilmater church that self-flagellate similar to Christians who would wear hairshirts and such. But they're not mainstream, and definitely wouldn't be part of a major church in Baldur's Gate.

20 years ago this could just be attributed to running out of time in development. Now it's equally attributable to malice.

I thought it was mildly suspicious. But rationalised that it wasn't all that odd that a few individuals would create and follow branches of a religion that take things to extreme and does some weird things.

Is Loviatar in the game? They do self-flagellation and I think there was an adventure path or book or something where they were infiltrating the Ilmater church. It does sound like writers having no knowledge of Forgotten Realms (maybe that's actually a good thing...) and thinking "oh, a god of suffering - they must self inflict".

Yes there's an entire ritual you can participate in for Loviatar's blessings.

I don't even have an issue with mentioning Self-flagellation in itself, but rather mentioning just that as some kind of "oooh those silly religious nutjobs" own.

They could have just pasted existing Ilmater lore or anything that made you feel you were actually in an Ilmater Temple.

And this is obviously just one example of many situations I was taken out of immersion by similar lines. Jokes are fine obviously BG1 & 2 had tons of them but the overall tone still made you still feel reverence to the lore. Here it often feels like the writers just make a joke of it.

Ilmater preaches enduring pain and taking other people's pain upon yourself, not hurting yourself for no reason. Honestly I'm not sure if this is incompetence or just a rushjob. It is in Act 3 after all.
