E3 Shuts Down After Two-Decade Run as Video Game Industry’s Biggest Convention

The move, confirmed Tuesday, followed the gaming business’ biggest convention and media platform canceling its 2023 edition.

Image

It’s official: E3 has been shut down as the video game industry’s biggest convention and media platform for good.

“After more than two decades of E3, each one bigger than the last, the time has come to say goodbye. Thanks for the memories,” the Entertainment Software Association, the video game trade association, said on its X account Tuesday.

The ESA deciding to close down E3 as an event followed the 2023 edition of the Electronic Entertainment being canceled after several major game developers and companies, including Microsoft and Nintendo, announced they would not be in attendance.

The annual trade event for the video game industry had been set to take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 13 to 16, 2023. That outing was also the E3 event’s second attempt to return as an in-person event after the onset of the pandemic.

E3 was first canceled in 2020 amid the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a virtual edition held in 2021 before a planned in-person return for 2022. But that edition was canceled both as an in-person and virtual event. E3 had drawn as many as 65,000 attendees and over 200 exhibitors in past years.

At the same time, E3 faced competition from game companies organizing their own virtual events to share news and next-generation product rollouts with consumers. And as they also hosted their own direct-to-consumer livestreams (such as Nintendo’s Directs, Sony’s State of Play events or even smaller, indie studios like Shovel Knight developer Yacht Club Games’ August news video), the importance of E3 as an in-person event also came into question.

When I was a kid I dreamed of attending E3, but now the whole industry is gay and I don't care anymore.

Weird to create a news story about something that happened to E3 4 years ago.

I'm pretty sure E3 died when they stopped having booth babes. This is just them officially ending it.

Interesting attention to detail in the second video. Not particularly interested in this genre, but from the videos it's a game I'm happy to see exists.
Thank you for your attention to this matter!

There is also the problem that having their platforms makes it easier for devs and publishers to ban dissent and control what people see.

Some games are garbage and basically only made to flatter the developers, journos and their lickspittles. Look at Spec Ops: The Line. Garbage gameplay, tacked on multiplayer and a story so aggressively linear it makes a ruler jealous.

But because it "deconstructs" (read, insults the players of) shooters the usual gang of low-T titwanks sucked it off to completion. It still sold like garbage though so the consumers weren't convinced. Hell, I don't play FPS games (unless you count the Metroid Prime series) and even I thought this game was trash just for its insipid design.

As much as I hate EA with the passion of a thousand suns I hate journos more. A company has at least the excuse that they act in their own interests and are open about it; journos lying their asses off to their readers have no such excuse. If companies put out their own stuff and promote their games maybe they'll grow enough to realize that they don't need the access media anymore.

Then the mass death of journo sites can begin.

You seem to have pretty strong feelings about the game despite not playing it and not even knowing which genre it is.

E3 was basically dead as far as being relevant for almost a decade now anyway. Does anyone remember anything from a recent E3 that wasn't an amusing moment in a cringe compilation?
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

It is possible to determine a game is **** just from watching the game being played you know (especially if you're bored and the game is incredibly short). Also the second part of your sentence is nonsense. Are you seriously trying to tell me Spec Ops isn't a shooter?

I started playing Hitman World of Assassination a year ago, and there was always a weird sound issue where the sound would go out when my guy was turning. Yesterday I found out what the issue was: my left speaker has been unplugged the whole time. Hitman was apparently the only program affected. Do games generally not use stereo sound anymore?

I use headphones almost exclusively and I have not heard a non-stereo game for decades.
You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.

Roughly 1% of USA has vitiligo. 30-40% of all people with vitiligo have moderate to severe symptoms.
Blacks with moderate or severe vitiligo make up approximately 0.052% of the population in USA, but half of all new video game characters.

It's become like the Wilhelm scream for me. I know it's going to pop up in every game I play, and **** me off when it does. They could at least represent Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, or some other ****** up condition that would make me laugh.

"War bad" is probably the most overused theme in video games. Anytime a midwit thinks he's going to say something profound, it's nearly always some variation of this.
Therefore,
What video games have a message of "war good"?

Both Homefront games have a token "war bad, we should let Koreans keep executing us in the streets instead of fighting back!" character, but otherwise go nuts and light up those *****. Also, the idea of North Korea occupying the US is very funny.

Pretty much every Warhammer 40k game, unless you're playing as the homosexual Tau.
