The combat seems to expect you to want to engage in the extremely fun activity of playing with the physics engine and watching things go flying.
It's great, isn't it?
No, because I kick people and they move like 5 inches so I have to wait for them get into the exact position to try again

Magic in Dank Messiah is p.fun except the top spells. They look and feel really powerful, but they're weak as hell and take forever to charge up.

As you level up and find better equipment you will be less reliant on stealth/environment/catching enemies by surprise.

Has anyone played Dark Messiah as a pure mage? Any suggestions? I felt led towards the fighter path the first time I played (and is probably the most fun way to play) due to the execution mechanic.

Yea, make sure you don't touch any part of it at all. When you think you're safe to go back down… you're not, just wait.

From what I've read, Arkane Studios realized almost immediately that the all mighty foot was perhaps a bit too useful. However, instead of nerfing it, they made the decision to build the game around the mechanic instead. To a good result from what I can remember.
► Minor Combat Spoilers for Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

How well does this tie into hommV? Because it's supposed to continue the story. Is the protagonist Queen Isabel's demon rape baby?

Having a bit of a crashing issue. I tried Large Address Aware, but that didn't seem to help. Another search mentioned launching from a Mod Manager (which, funnily enough, also includes LAA), but I haven't had a chance to try it. Hopefully, ya'll have better luck.

yup, it's a little after all the events of HommV and its expansions, Sareth is Isabel's freaky little rapechild from daddy Kha-Beleth, you can choose to side with him at the end and stay true to the prophecy

For those crashing, dxvk may fix it since the issue doesn't happen on linux
https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases

extract the DLLs to the same directory as mm.exe

Getting some kind of reward for combat is probably something else that belongs in a definition of an RPG

They drop their weapon(s) and sometimes keys.

If you mean specifically exp, I disagree. When I DM in TTRPGs, I do not want to disincentivize diplomacy, stealth, trickery, or other creative problem solving. Sometimes that's milestone leveling (which is basically what this game does), and sometimes it's rewarding the same exp they would have gotten for combat.

modern tabletop RPGs are just LARP

You can tell it's LARP because the female audience has grown

If I'm incentivized to just run past enemies because there's no reward for actually engaging with them then 2bh you've failed disastrously at some point.

The reward is getting to kick them into spikes galore.

Half the time I kick them they barely move, I can't understand what causes it because it seems almost random.

But yes, at some point during development they decided to just put emphasis on environmental interactions instead of combat. The actual combat is... Not good

I did. I don't think that some special suggestions are needed, it's a pretty straightforward class. Telekinesis is useful throughout the game so it's worth taking early. Crowd control spells are also useful.

There's definitely some really good level design, especially with regards to well thought out placement of items & secrets, especially when combined with the environmental hazards/interactions. But you can tell the designers were being hamstrung by the lack of ability to actually give anything out, so you find a secret and get a potion or two.

Reminds me of Elex 2 where the designers were trying to put in things for you to find by thinking vertical but there was nothing to give out so here's another chicken con carne sitting in the middle of nowhere, enjoy.
