Has a game having "Pre-Order Bonus Content" made you lose interest in it?

Post by SpellSword »

Does anyone else find that the mere presence of this kind of DLC being included with a pre-order is unselling you the game?

For example I've been waiting for the release of a super robot brawler called "UFO Robot Grendizer - The Feast of the Wolves" but now that they have included a pre-order exclusive DLC I found my desire to purchase it was gone and I removed it from my shopping cart.

I get all store/console/ultimate ****** edition/pre-order exclusive DLC in the pirated release. If a developer is predatory in any way, they don't deserve your money.

An appeal to FOMO is manipulation. I don't like being manipulated. It's especially egregious because it's not even a physical product with physical production limits.

The first game I remember using this disgusting behavior is the fanfiction game "Mass Effect 2". Too bad they never made a sequel to Mass Effect until MEA.

https://www.ign.com/articles/2009/10/16 ... -announced

A slew of pre-order bonus items have also been revealed. Pre-ordering Mass Effect 2 at GameStop gives players access to two special items. The Terminus Armor, which increases run speed and personal shields, and the M-490 Blackstorm Heavy Weapon, a high-powered gravity gun.

Pre-ordering the game at other retailers gives players The Inferno Armor, which recognizes elevated heart rates and gives a negotiation bonus for Commander Shepard, along with an increase in run speed and augmented damage from combat powers.

BioWare clarified to IGN the pre-order bonus items will be offered at select retailers worldwide and will be available to PC owners as well.

It is one of those games that is best described with a spreadsheet

Since I can get almost all games from the high seas any company doing this surely doesnt get supported once they release their finished version with all the patches/dlcs 5 years after release.

It depends
I'm careful with my spending when it comes to games

The only pre-orders I accept are those for incoming expansions for GW2
I guess you can count it as "lose interest" cause I don't play it as much as I used to, but it's only because I only have +/- 6-7h per day, recently even less, for myself

It's gonna jump up back once expanded weapon proficiency drops

DLCs are not a turnoff for me. I like DLCs if they are reasonable in pricing/content balance
Skyrim, Solasta, Pathfinder: WoTC are games I bought DLCs for, but I lost interest in Skyrim over a decade ago, Solasta is ugly after playing BG3, and Owlcat crossed my line of trust
It's just my opinion, not the absolute truth

If it's a game I'm interested in, I would wait a few months until everything is released, and then I can download the whole thing. I wouldn't pre-order anything.

Who the **** do these pre-order bonuses exist for? The dumb-dumbs that are pre-ordering? They're already dumb enough to do it so I doubt throwing in random crossover **** into the ******* thing is going to accomplish anything.
Psychology was a mistake. Marketing was a mistake. **** were a mistake. Video games were a mistake.

It bothers me if I can't have everything in the game available to me, including all the pre-order crap.
You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.

I think that is what was dissuading me from purchasing the game, the feeling of it not being a 'whole' product.

Sure with the pre-order DLC, super-mega-deluxe-version content, time exclusive DLC and special offer skin from some soft drink promotion all of the possible content can be installed... but it doesn't feel complete anymore.

If you have pre-order DLC you're cutting content from your product to fomo ppl into buying it. I exclusively pirate these games, if they're any good to begin with.

Especially if they replace that exclusive pre-order DLC with the usual 10% launch discount, always a no from me.
