Housing in MMORPGS

Housing in MMOs is fundamentally at odds with your status as a murderhobo. Yurt is the only option that makes sense.
I don't like housing, it is such a waste of development time.
It also triggered me especially because EQ already had banks. You had about 8 slots, and then you could put an 8 slot backpack in each one so it gave you more space. But people still ran out of room, especially if they ran a guild. And especially if they collected something. I never liked crafting but I would collect Words because they could be used to research rare and valuable spells. But as soon as you start collecting something like that, all your inventory space just goes. You can fill a bank in no time.
So all they needed to do was add more slots... But we went years without that because they were such harsh *******. Then at some point they offered an extra bank slot as part of an Expansion pack. Buy our addon so you get an extra bank slot... That was about the time I quit the game and never paid them again. I moved to emulators instead. Then a few years later they added houses. They served no purpose at all except more room to store ****. Yet all that development time was spent on such an overblown feature. They went for years refusing to give an extra bank slot, then added a whole complex housing system instead of just throwing people a bone. Dicks.

Caring about this in an MMO is akin to caring about what color of dildo one purchases. At the end of the day, it is an object you slide up your ****-pipe to (presumably) get off. The color is irrelevant. Also, it is an indicator of one's innate homosexuality.
Facts and logic, yall.

But in all seriousness, I've never seen the point of housing in any of these games. It's just a hollow feature for an already hollow genre, imo. Felt the same with houses in Skyrim. You buy one, great... then what? You can't really do much with them other than look at them, mildly decorate them, and LARP as a homeowner in a game that has ****-all to do with that.

There's clearly a fundamental divide between form over function people and function over form people. It's why my brother-in-law plays Minecraft by making fancy structures with no gameplay purpose while I dig a hole in the ground and then spend all my time acquiring resources. It's why he picks the equipment in RPGs that looks the coolest on his avatar while I choose whatever seems to be mathematically optimal. It's why some people get into miniatures games for the sake of painting models while I'm happy to play with generic tokens and proxies. Those of the latter camp are never going to care about player housing that doesn't actually do anything; the real question, at least for the developers, is what percentage of the player base belongs to each camp.
yeah I am also more the practical oriented unless houses provide significant stat boosts or other things like access to merchants or storage I usually dont bother.
Also would be cool to have a game where you can collect body parts from your enemies and build your own ziguraat from it minecraft style. But I guess its hard to market towards kids as a target audience...

The average gamer age is over 30 and kids have no money and barely exist anymore due to sub-replacement birthrates. There is no point in marketing things to them.Vaako wrote: β March 24th, 2026, 00:35Also would be cool to have a game where you can collect body parts from your enemies and build your own ziguraat from it minecraft style. Housing in UO was great. Imagine trying to go for a walk in the woods when suddenly you bump into a house that materialized out of thin air, and then another house and another and another. Imagine every single spot of land that could hold even the smallest plot filled with someone's house so that no matter where you go there was always a shack, a castle, a tower obstructing your view and making the great outdoors feel more an endless field of alleyways. Now imagine that every other house has at least one irritating 12-year-old griefer in it who immediately comes running out to try and murder you as you walk past and the minute you get the upper hand he runs back inside and bans you from his home, magically teleporting you outside with no way to get in and kill him.
On the flip side, imagine going for a stroll in suburbia and finding a house full of someone's pack horses that they're using as extra storage space to sidestep the house's item limit. Imagine knowing that meteor swarm can clip through houses if you aim it right. Imagine that poor sucker logging in to find all of his precious horses dead and whatever was stored on them lost to the void.
God, I loved UO.

It's not really an MMO, but Path of Exile's Hideout system was a nice addition to the game. It actually fit into the setting too, at least initally before the story went completely off the rails.
You find an area in an otherwise wrecked country, sweep all most of the crap out the way, throw down some rugs and make a fire next to your crafting benches, and a portal to some other awful place.
It always reminded of the Arisen's Refuge in DD:DA, another equally well fitting addition to the game.

Absolute Chad tauren housing my man, I loved Taurens in W3 and vanilla, great race to play, felt powerful as ****.
I really like LOTRO for housing - the general Tolkien atmosphere fits the setting and housing shows that as well, it was also used in roleplaying. SWTOR housing let me pull out some nice bases and screens without HUD, they will serve me well for my tabletop location, will get some screens ar later date.

One of you would get a trophy wife, another one is in danger of getting a chick of alternate beauty and high lifestyle expectations.WhiteShark wrote: β March 24th, 2026, 00:19There's clearly a fundamental divide between form over function people and function over form people. Club Penguin had literal wars going at those homes... Hey don't look weird at me that's an MMO.mynameismortis wrote: β January 31st, 2026, 16:31I was thinking about this today when i saw the new WoW housing, what was the most memorable house you built in an mmorpg? Or what mmo build the closest system to your liking?
Many MMOs had this thing about housing, though I played few. Never really experimented with these features, housing is fun but meh there really are no games where this is the focus and it's mostly a gimmick.
If it serves anything, I used to collect rare furniture in Habbo and invite people to watch my collection at home, it was my first time meeting the scum of the earth (scalpers) so it's important to me lol.
This hits home, I had tons of mods for Morrowind that just added a ton of useless **** to find, I killed some **** and occupied his house just to litter it with expensive shiny crap.
I don't know why in the god **** Bethesda decided their game's items would now be dropped randomly instead of a precise point and click.
Dragging items around is funny, but dropping something and spending ilke 5 minutes searching for it and then another 5 just placing it somewhere in the position you want it... **** that sucks, at that point just use the CK lol.
MAAAAAAN I remember when this game was announced, used to check ALL about it in the Lego page and was so excited to play it, sadly I for some reason never managed to make it run in my PC

I could maybe like houses in a game with PVP where people can attack houses. Then I could defend my propertah.
Well, he married rather well, while I've only managed to secure wives of alternate existence, but at least they have no expectations!DemoGraph wrote: β March 24th, 2026, 11:39One of you would get a trophy wife, another one is in danger of getting a chick of alternate beauty and high lifestyle expectations.WhiteShark wrote: β March 24th, 2026, 00:19There's clearly a fundamental divide between form over function people and function over form people. This is why games with houses should be on ships, whether in space or otherwise. Then not only can people attack houses, the houses can also attack each other.anvi wrote: β March 24th, 2026, 19:19I could maybe like houses in a game with PVP where people can attack houses. I have no desire to build or decorate player housing as I have no ovaries. The same applies for investing time into creating a character visually.
A furry doesn't take the time to customize a humanoid when they can't have giant cat ears and a tail? I'm shocked. There is nothing wrong with good aesthetics, in FACT there IS something wrong if you only ever live in clown chaos.Cedric wrote: β March 25th, 2026, 12:18I have no desire to build or decorate player housing as I have no ovaries.
