I already have this game, but I'm afraid to install it before AO gives his opinion, and while Rusty's gaze is upon it, because I'm afraid that my opinion on it will be closely scrutinized.
Well it will probably be a while before I finish it. And much like AoD I don't think a single playthrough is going to show even a fraction of the game's depth. It seems to be a lot larger than AoD even judging by the first 8 hour or so hours of play, while maintaining the same content density.
Since a lot of people whined about things like "teleporting" and "cyoa" elements in AoD, Colony Ship does have less areas that rely on navigating only through dialogue choices. For example the area that parallels The Abyss from AoD, is in Colony Ship a fully explorable dungeon rather than a series of dialogue skill checks-- think something a lot closer to The Glow from Fallout 1 which was the clear inspiration for both.
Sneaking is handled significantly differently, rather than again being a series of dialogue skill checks, and from what little I experienced as my non-sneaking build seems to be based around getting a starting advantage and superior positioning over the enemy rather than being an instant win with a high enough skill.
The leveling system is drastically different from AoD. You no longer get skill points on level up, so saving up skill points to pass future checks is out, instead skills are leveled through a combination of level by use, trainers, and augmentations. Your character can no longer be an expert lore master because they passed a bunch of persuasion checks and lockpicked a bunch of doors.
This feeds into the combat system as well, because improving your chances in combat is now tied more to the feats system than purely skill level. Feats are basically perks and can alter your character significantly, for example giving you ways to increase Action Points through means other than maxing out Dexterity. I haven't played far enough to be sure but hopefully this means that combat won't be trivialized by getting 10 in your weapon skill and defense skill of choice as quickly as possible.
