Tim Cain creating "Cain on Games" videos
Youtube says I watched the one with Jason Taylor and I don't remember a single thing from it.
I do remember that Tim didn't like how he felt it necessary to deliver an apology video after Scott Campbell misgendered Burger Bill (by referring to him by the name and pronouns he knew him as).

Yeah, his videos on game design and playing old tabletop rpgs are very good. His videos on how hard it is to be a *** in the 21st century that loves **** are very skippable.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ February 13th, 2026, 18:40
And if you're wondering why I watch his videos, yes, they're (mostly) quite insightful. I skip about maybe a quarter of them, typically ones like this.

Swen used to have a blog, the last entry he ever wrote was pretty funny https://web.archive.org/web/20200318210 ... w.lar.net/
BG3 was a deliberate attempt to get more women playing his games, degrading himself to do so.

A particular emphasis of my design goals when entering the company was in improving the romance arcs for the games. Making content for a generation who have grown up reading Fanfiction, and making our dreams come true. And, erm, the infamous bear scene was originally my pitch, if that’s any qualification.

If you guys had any good serious questions to ask, I'd be willing to pay for membership to his channel on behalf of RPGHQ to see if we can get a video on it.
Serious questions he'd actually answer only.

I think he's long ran out of anything worthwhile to talk about at this point. Whenever I hear "partner", I think business partner. As in two people co-owning a small or medium sized business. So bizzare to hear it used this other way.I saw my partner play
These writers have a bizzare idea of "romance". Adventuring with Shadowheart for a few days, only for her to want you to come to some secluded place at night and get drunk... what? That sounds like a one night stand built on a pile of sand rather than true love. To say nothing of Gale on his first or second interaction with you at camp inviting you to show you magic tricks, showing you a hologram of another woman he was already in love with, before then getting close to your face and smiling... that's supposed to be an appealing romance? Becoming the next adventure of a would-be betrayer? He'd probably ditch you for the next attraction soon enough too.Roguey wrote: ↑ February 15th, 2026, 15:18A particular emphasis of my design goals when entering the company was in improving the romance arcs for the games. That is kind of more accurate a term for *** "marriages" considering it's basically an entirely secular legalistic institution for the sake of tax benefits and the sharing of assets.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ February 16th, 2026, 08:16Whenever I hear "partner", I think business partner. I find it WEIRD to think that way. I don't have a "partner". I have an OPPONENT.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ February 16th, 2026, 08:16Whenever I hear "partner", I think business partner. As in two people co-owning a small or medium sized business. So bizzare to hear it used this other way.
"Partner" is the ***** liberal straight person term. The gays happily use WIFE and HUSBAND.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ February 16th, 2026, 08:16Whenever I hear "partner", I think business partner. It'd be cool to ask him his thoughts as a designer on Ken Rolston's "never betray the player" and "only one coincidence allowed" rule.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ February 16th, 2026, 07:42If you guys had any good serious questions to ask, I'd be willing to pay for membership to his channel on behalf of RPGHQ to see if we can get a video on it.

And yet it's New Vegas that the people like and not The Outer Worlds. I go for Pillars over Arcanum myself, Steam users feel the same https://steamdb.info/charts/?compare=29 ... 810,560130

I asked him a question once and he answered. Don't have a membership, and I meant it rhetorically, but he answered.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ February 16th, 2026, 07:42If you guys had any good serious questions to ask, I'd be willing to pay for membership to his channel on behalf of RPGHQ to see if we can get a video on it.

He's referring to Baldur's Gate, I tried the same thing and still remember being angry it didn't work.

I am going to give him a lot of credit for what was done in Arcanum. It genuinely is one of the best RPGs out there simply because of how many different ways you can break the game in an enjoyable way. Bioware style RPGs from BG and onwards have always been massively scripted and this is still the case today.
Ultima 7 was designed in a way that NPCs operate independent of the player yet when you see a game like Dragon's Dogma 2 that shits itself just having NPC schedules which are very simple shows how that scripting mentality has not gone away. Big budget title games have always been about numbers. Get a large team, get a large number of designers creating "quests". BG2 is the best of the lot because of how much creativity went into the quests themselves, other games fail miserably because it all becomes generic slop fetch quest type nonsense.

Multiple false statements here:
Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes was a singleplayer game set in Greyhawk.
Dungeons & Dragons Online takes place across multiple D&D settings, with many adventures in Greyhawk(read: dozens of adapted classic adventures)… including recreating the entire Temple of Elemental Evil across two separate adventures, meaning ToEE was not the only computer game adaptatino. But it also has entire regions from Greyhawk as explorable areas, etc., It's hard to not call this the definitive Greyhawk game at this point.
…And! One more you won't find mentioned much of elsewhere: Dungeons & Dragons Tactics for the PSP is likely set in Greyhawk. We can infer this from the pantheon: https://www.gamebanshee.com/dndtactics/deities.php

Tim Cain agrees with the only respectable position that you should NOT be able to control your companions
I'd go so far to say that If you can control your companions it stops being an RPG but some sort of tacticool hybrid!

This is only acceptable for action games, it sucks with turn-based and real-time-with pause.
I'd like a game that goes even further with companions. They can make their own decisions about gear, and they shop and/or loot from the same pool as the player. With maybe some % chance of who gets to pick first.
TOEE did a little bit in this regard where recuitable companions had their own gear they wouldn't trade to the player, and some took a cut of the gold looted from enemies.

Then maybe he should make them HUFF LESS GLUE. Because without the ability to control them, any hard combat pretty much sees them Leeroy themselves into certain doom. This is why any games where you DON'T control them, in such as first/third person RPGs, pretty much make them unkillable, so when they fall down, they just get back up again after the battle ends.. Which, of course, means you use them as unkillable meatshields instead.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ February 20th, 2026, 13:35Tim Cain agrees with the only respectable position that you should NOT be able to control your companions
RPGs were ALWAYS tacticool hybrids, since D&D derives from Chainmail.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ February 20th, 2026, 13:35I'd go so far to say that If you can control your companions it stops being an RPG but some sort of tacticool hybrid!
TOEE's NPC gear looting rules were really weird because NPCs would occasionally get it into their heads to claim gear they couldn't even use if you weren't very careful with how you picked stuff up.Acrux wrote: ↑ February 20th, 2026, 19:23I'd like a game that goes even further with companions. For NPCs to decide sensibly about gear, they'd have to be capable of understanding gear and buildfaggotry. I'd be impressed if they could make an NPC that actually behaved realistically with respects to loot and gear demands, instead of relying on you to dress them like toddlers.
