***** RPG thread
Its funny you bring this up. I played the swordsman online that got released on the west, through steam, until it got taken down.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ January 19th, 2026, 09:34******* insane that western companies can't keep old MMOs like Asheron's Call up, games that had significant cultural impact at the time, yet Asian developers keep their 300 online games per developer up perpetually.
I can easily guess the reason why: Asian studios are owned and staffed by people who actually like the games.
There's 6 separate "Swordsman Online" games, each with separate releases/iterations all available. It's just crazy.
(Swordsman Online is related to Legend of Swordsman I posted earlier)

Thank you.Poityu wrote: ↑ January 19th, 2026, 13:32The MG one has a valid one on the 2nd floor. I'll see if I can get these up on archive.org just to make sure they're archived somewhere.
If any actual Chinese come across this thread, I still need these tho:
It's the fan remake of the games in a rewritten engine, contrast to something like e.g., OpenMWrusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ January 19th, 2026, 12:44If anyone here lives in chinkland + has a baidu account + is willing to mirror these, let me knowrusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ January 19th, 2026, 11:54Actually, think I just need to figure out how to download from baidu at this point.

The streamerfaggot groupies that took over all game boards have thrown in with ***** against the West. It makes sense china would attract the bugmen with soulless peasant games about chores that play themselves, when they aren't looking at the screen.

The west offers nothing these days. Change that, you massive ******, instead of getting anally butthurt people gravitate to old school rpgs in the east when the west fails miserably for half a decade (More like 2 decades, but who is counting).

We must pass through fire, before I raise the Oriflamme.
I think the rot will come for China's videogame industry eventually, not as severe as the West but it will happen. Just as stagnation and decline has hit Japan (though ofcourse even as bad things have gotten, their entertainment remains at least enjoyable).

Gamedevs are running to china; Kurt Kuhlmann didn't retire, he wanted keep making games, and he's doing it for Tencents. If devs are moving to tencent companies while microsoft dies from ganges fever, then they may get a creative boost.
@Kalarion what do you disagree on?
I bet he thinks China's line will go up forever and they will never face decline or have to stop making gachas. If he doesn't post a real response, just assume that's the point of disagreement.
In the case of China it will be at least as bad, and probably much worse. It's just that they're at the height of their "recovery" arc right now. But we've already seen the depths they fall to when they go in for their version of woke. It won't be any prettier this time.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ January 21st, 2026, 12:56I think the rot will come for China's videogame industry eventually, not as severe as the West but it will happen. As far as Japan I disagree stridently that there was no or low rot, it was basically baked in. Japanese entertainment media has never had anything but a fluffy, childishly utopian humanist view since their introduction to the American market. They've only ever been better than American media in comparison to the ludicrously depraved lows we're currently in. Note that I do not discount the possibility we can sink even lower.
I don't dispute that they're both better quality than America right now though, especially in visuals. And that Japan has always been a serious contender, and many times a winner, in that department.
EDIT: slight change to the penultimate sentence.

Did you know South Korea had their own Ultima VII clone? I didn't. Also, the combat looks better.
신검의 전설 2 : 라이어(New Sword Legend 2: Liar) 1995

It looks like it did receive an English port in 2009, but the game also seems a bit different

Wow, goodluck finding a copy of that!

I don't even know why it was translated into English, GP2X was a korean-exclusive console
