******* insane that western companies can't keep old MMOs like Asheron's Call up, games that had significant cultural impact at the time, yet Asian developers keep their 300 online games per developer up perpetually.
I can easily guess the reason why: Asian studios are owned and staffed by people who actually like the games.
There's 6 separate "Swordsman Online" games, each with separate releases/iterations all available. It's just crazy.
(Swordsman Online is related to Legend of Swordsman I posted earlier)

Its funny you bring this up. I played the swordsman online that got released on the west, through steam, until it got taken down.

The MG one has a valid one on the 2nd floor. Its upload date is the latest (2025-11), but that folder is dirty, littered with modding tools and miscellaneous things.

I think the rot will come for China's videogame industry eventually, not as severe as the West but it will happen. Just as stagnation and decline has hit Japan (though ofcourse even as bad things have gotten, their entertainment remains at least enjoyable).

Corporate art is an anomaly, unique to the anomaly that was the 20th century. It was in this environment in which line was going up. Population and resources. 20 years of education became the norm and the educational institutions were still functioning and successfully imparting employable skills and knowledge. Societal cohesion hadn't totally collapsed yet. Etc. This is the environment in which highly complex art like movies that takes at least dozens if not hundreds or thousands of people to produce become possible (not to mention all of the logistics involved in making the materials, distribution, etc). And then you have videogames - software - which are the most complex entertainment medium out there, running on hardware that requires a complex operation to produce, etc.

All of this complexity is dependent on the holistic environment sustaining it. If one or two things go bad, that can be endured. But when the whole environment declines, the products it produces declines or even becomes unproduceable. We have seen collapses like this before like the Bronze Age collapse where people fled from the cities. We just saw it on a small scale with the 2008 housing crash where people were selling ABS securities under the presumption that the scheme would protect them from a few bad loans and that all of them would not go bad. We have seen it in the US with how we have lost the ability to put a man in the moon, with the manufacturing equipment for the rockets gone and the people with the technical know how on how to produce them being dead or retired with no successors to pass their skills on to.

And then we have the Japanese. The bubble burst, people struggle to afford supporting a family and don't get married, people become stressed out trying to study after school to get into a "prestigious" college do that they can become an overworked salaryman with little time barely able to afford an apartment in Tokyo. Suicides. The population plateaued and is shrinking and overall aging. Japan and South Korea - propped up by injections of cash from the US using them as their base in the Far East, which then ceased as the cold war wound down - were the first to be hit by lime going down and the rest of the 1st world eventually followed once their inertia stopped.

The Japanese novel publishing industry has borderline died. Visual novels died. J-Pop has become a shadow of its former self. Most JRPG devs died. Anime went from making lavish movies and OVAs to 48 episode shows to 24 and now can't even get 12 shoddy looking episodes out on time. They lost the ability to hand animate 2D mecha and horses and cars. The list goes on.

The line will stop going up for China eventually. They will face the same fate as us and plateau and then start going down, and their complex art will decline with it. We have already seen the warning signs with their aging population and the CCP trying to get people to marry and have families. Zhou Jian, the CEO of Reverse 1999 developer Bluepoch, stated in an interview last month that he went all in on starting his own company and investing in r1999 a few years ago because he thought that would have been the last opportunity to do so (read: the Chinese games industry becoming oversaturated, line not going up anymore). Mihoyo - the biggest privately owned games company ever - is diversifying their in other things like nuclearpower plants.

I think we are about to watch the turning point happen over the next few years as all of these Genshin clones finally come out, each being made by armies of devs needed to make such complicated, high production value games with 6 week content patch schedules. The market had already plateaued with Genshin/HSR/LADs and the latecomers will fight for scraps. That won't be able to subsidize all of these armies of devs. It's the WoW clone/LoL clone/Overwatch clone phenomena but with way more on the line. These enormous investments are predicated on the gacha model which is the most profitable known model for these kind of crazy high production value games. If that model stops working then you have huge payrolls of employees who can't make your money back. Which means they have to be laid off. Some studios might downsize and make cheaper games, but the Chinese games' industry will decline.

The Asian games industry will still overall be better than the West's by virtue of still having culturally unified nations, and since their schools seem to still teach people to be good artists, unlike the West where people get degrees and hired without being good.

Gamedevs are running to china; Kurt Kuhlmann didn't retire, he wanted keep making games, and he's doing it for Tencents. If devs are moving to tencent companies while microsoft dies from ganges fever, then they may get a creative boost.

In the case of China it will be at least as bad, and probably much worse. It's just that they're at the height of their "recovery" arc right now. But we've already seen the depths they fall to when they go in for their version of woke. It won't be any prettier this time.

As far as Japan I disagree stridently that there was no or low rot, it was basically baked in. Japanese entertainment media has never had anything but a fluffy, childishly utopian humanist view since their introduction to the American market. They've only ever been better than American media in comparison to the ludicrously depraved lows we're currently in. Note that I do not discount the possibility we can sink even lower.

I don't dispute that they're both better quality than America right now though, especially in visuals. And that Japan has always been a serious contender, and many times a winner, in that department.
