Excellent thread, but like @logincrash said, this is some maddening ****. The Skies of Arcadia one in particular is disgusting. There are two versions of that game: the true original, and the bastardization. **** these people and their 'take the moral high ground' ********.
I hate them.

Once again, the problem is not localization changing a bad script because weebisms are stupid, it's that libtards are in charge of it.

https://github.com/bquenin/interpreter
Offline screen translator for Japanese retro games. Captures text from any window, performs OCR, translates to English, and displays subtitles in a floating overlay.

Fully offline - No cloud APIs, no internet required after setup
Free - No API costs or subscriptions
Private - Text never leaves your machine
Optimized for retro games - Uses MeikiOCR, trained specifically on Japanese game text
Two overlay modes - Banner (subtitle bar) or inplace (text over game)
Translation caching - Fuzzy matching avoids re-translating similar text

Overlay Modes
Banner Mode (default)
A subtitle bar at the bottom of the screen displaying translated text. Draggable, opaque background, centered text.

Inplace Mode
Transparent overlay positioned over the game window. Translated text appears directly over the original Japanese text at OCR-detected positions. Click-through so you can interact with the game.

How It Works
Screen Capture - Captures the target window at the configured refresh rate
OCR - MeikiOCR extracts Japanese text (optimized for pixel fonts)
Translation - Sugoi V4 translates Japanese to English
Display - Shows translated text in the selected overlay mode

I installed it, but I can't get it to work:

Code: Select all

Exception: Capture session threw an exception: Graphics capture error: Toggling cursor capture is not supported by the Graphics Capture API on this platform.
Couldn't find any settings related to the cursor. Gemini thinks my version of Windows 10 is too old. I don't feel like spending much time troubleshooting this since I won't be using it, but if you or anyone else wants to post screenshots for me to judge, I'm willing to do that.

Please recommend a game that is worth testing this on. I think, before installing the program, it is worth preparing a game to test it on.

Do you mean a good Japanese game, or a good Japanese game that has no English translation? It's a difficult request either way. 'Good Japanese game' is extremely broad, and I don't know your tastes. As for good untranslated games, I really don't know. Feels like everything has an official or fan translation, even obscure games. I think Chinese games are more likely to have no translation, but I can't judge those.

Anyway, I guess to not leave you empty handed, the last two Japanese games I've been enjoying are Stella Glow, a relatively light tactics RPG for the 3DS, and 三妖精ぴょこぴょこ討伐大作戦 (English title: Three Fairies' Hoppin' Flappin' Great Journey), a mechanically intense JRPG in which you write scripts that control your party's actions in combat.

I'd recommend a Dragon Quest game. Nearly everything is completely ****** up for no reason so you should be able to get a good sense of whether or not the tool is better than the official localization. Refer to the OP.

Is that **** even proper grammar? At least with 90s slang, they used sentences, just unique words that were still words, like gnarly, bodacious, tubular.

There is a reason why no one ever uses this term: The development* of a woman's brain stops around age 14. So, regardless of their physical age, women remain mentally children forever.

Using the term "womanchild" is thus a pleonasm.

*For the sake of brevity, I used the word “development,” which is inaccurate. A more accurate term would be “underdevelopment.” Basically, when interacting with a woman of any age, you are always dealing with a mentally ******** teenager.

Can confirm it's an intentional mistranslation. Trailer timestamped when he says the line:

The line in Japanese:

君はきっと正義が狂気に変わる前に止めることができる人だと思うから。 For I believe you're surely someone who can stop justice before it becomes madness.

Anyone can confirm by turning on auto-generated Japanese subtitles, though it will mistakenly render 狂気 as 狂器:

This tool is great, I'm testing it with Ninja Gaiden IV and it translates fast enough, just not sure about it's accuracy with complex phrases, but they seemed to make sense with the context of the game.
I had to limit the area of the screen it reads, as making it constantly read the full screen made CPU utilization double, causing a lot of delay with controller inputs, I have a r5 5600, guess a 5700/5700x3d wouldn't have this problem.

The constant goofy dialogue that seems to be everpresent in most of the games coming out keeps breaking my suspension of disbelief. If the game is meant to be comedic, so be it. But it is in everything now.
The three evils that humanity faces:
Censorship
Telemetry
DRM
