HQ or not? Expeditions: Rome

Post by fkirenicus »

So. Judging from what I find when searching, "Expeditions: Rome" isn't exactly HQ? I added it to the wish list a while back, and now it's on sale... Quite the discount, actually.
But is it worth it at all?

LQ.
Mediocre combat, most combat encounters are closer to puzzles, repeatedly requires you to use your backup teams for no reason, heavy-handed social commentary on gender politics, not historically accurate at all.

Expeditions: Vikings was pretty good, btw.

This was added in a last-minute patch before release btw, it wasn't in the demo build.

Better look at Vikings or even Conquistador, both worth playing, also both quite different.

It and Expeditions Viking are very fun games. They are more historical fantasy, but still accurate or rather in some aspects.
One cool thing for example is that you can be an extremely based (sexist, racist) Roman in the Rome one, and despite some stronk wymynn being there it's still not that bad and basically done in the best way one could have. (Although one shouldn't have, of course.)
Overall the combat encounters are pretty fun and I like the story and characters, actually.

Of course, there's a bit much women in combat, but it's bearable. Sadly I haven't founds mods to make all enemies male though. And another thing is that you recruit Officers in Rome for your army, of which a huge amount have ****** portraits, as they are randomised and with skintone, the portraits change as well. Haven't found a mod to remove all those wu wuz legionnairies either, sadly. So I just waited painstakingly to get good ones with unique portraits that aren't *******, and I had great fun.
Edit: Ah, the last thing was already mentioned.

So overall, still recommended.

Looks like an ashy black version of a 70s character. Totally out of context, ruins immersion. The art is truly awful here.

Conquistador is the best one, there is no debate. Vikings is weak and Rome is gay.

Also the card-based legion combat minigame is quite bad.

I feel like the game had potential to be good, but they ****** it up in a lot of ways.

Having racism be a stat was based in Conquistador. Marrying 15 year old indio girls as a diplomacy tactic. Locking an entire character as a companion behind kickstarter was pretty gay, but the file is fairly easy to find.
Nerfing unarmed in Vikings was insanely gay. Having to manage your village is pretty annoying.
Rome is full of *******, but I liked it more than Vikings.

I'm guessing the portraits are auto-generated via $face[random()] * $color[random()] * $hairstyle[random()]

I have a fondness for Conquistador even if it's the most basic one of the expeditions trilogy.

Also had the best music despite a limited number of songs:

I haven't found distinct proof of this claim but I firmly believe the ****** potraits was a last minute addition by the publisher THQ. Logic Artists is still to blame, of course, but given their swift bankruptcy it's clear THQ had them on a very tight funding leash. Also, just check the potraits. They're rush jobs with no effort made to even blend the outline into the background as you see with the white potraits. Those weren't remotely planned. Have to wonder what THQ was asking them to do as their franchise went on.

I enjoyed Rome for the most part. I recruited only whites, and constantly had to keep refreshing the barracks to get my proper romans. The actual legion battles via the cards is rather boring and was a clear indication they were pushing the boundaries of feature creep rather than focusing on what worked. The siege battles are too few and far between. The downtime in Rome needed more content and more of a focus on your family, who blend into the ether later on. Deianeira was too much. We know Scythian women did fight, but not as infantry. The Scythians in general were strange and abnormal, so the pick itself was clever, just needed to be toned down. It would have resulted in two archers which I would have been fine with.

It lost the edge of Conquistador ultimately, which I feel was inevitable given the IPs popularity increase which commonly results in the publisher deciding they suddenly care about the studio and its games. EA was notorious for sabotaging and killing their studios when they reached peak success. A shame to see history repeat itself.

Buying this game was one of my biggest regrets. You can't even tell the obvious woman pretending to be a man to **** off immediately upon her introduction. You have to wait for the game to allow you to (unless they've changed something).

Reminds me of the character in Assassin's Creed Black Flag who is so obviously a woman pretending to be a man.
All the characters just ignore her terrible disguise and horribly unconvincing impression of a guy and you have to suffer through so many cutscenes that make the characters seem like *******.

It can't be a coincidence they're pushing this in multiple games.

It also seems like games just quietly removed the option to deny companions. In the past you used to have a core and could reject/kill most, no? Now you have to take in everyone, and the worse they are the more likely it is they're forced onto you frequently.

Yeah, Edward's surprised face once the reveal happened (she just put her hair down and smeared some red on her lips while sitting literally next to him) made him look like a ******* total drooling moron.
