I don't rightly know, but this website claims it's older English that mostly survives in Southern and Appalachian dialects. Perhaps Jaheira is a yankee.Tweed wrote: ↑ November 12th, 2025, 07:05Is there some kind of a running gag or literary flourish with the phrase "I don't rightly know"? Because it shows up a lot in games that guys from Black Isle and Obsidian worked on. You even get a chance to say it in Baldur's Gate 2 at the beginning of the Jaheira romance and she insults you for it.

Not sure which movie, but this sounds like something you'd hear in a Western.Tweed wrote: ↑ November 12th, 2025, 07:05Is there some kind of a running gag or literary flourish with the phrase "I don't rightly know"? More DEI depicted in the video beyond the ***** and possible ****.

The "emperor" is a woman.
There are female ship/fleet captains.
And a surprising number of SSAfricoons. As in any at all, really. There's a centurion that would not look out of place at an Atlanta Popeye's Chicken or an episode of Cops.

EDIT: They also have a nagging aura that makes male units work faster.

I guess i do like stuff with immersive sim elements to it but don't really stress over that. I do like 2000s games, stuff that capcom/rockstar/ubisoft of the old used to make before they fell off. Bully/Manhunt/GTA VC/DMC series/Original Resident Evil series/etc.
Played this recently, it was short but fun.

Definitely play Mass Effect series if you haven't yet, not the greatest shooter but the story and narrative itself is great. Then another one of my personal favourites is Pathologic (2), the Russian autists behind it made an incredible gem, that game makes you think and wonder for a long time. Pentiment is a very interesting game in the story/choice type of genre, the art and general style might be off-putting at first but I enjoyed it. If you are open to almost-horror then Soma is the best game probably in that story-narrative category, the aesthetic is just great even if there is not much to gameplay. These are just the main(stream) suggestions
Mass effects seem less interesting the more time passes. I played 1-2 on their releases, then 3 some time after it came out, had a friend who said it had fun multiplayer arena-like mode and yes, it was fun to get to play as Geth prime. I actually got that game for free when bought someone else's account for battlefield 3 for literally pennies, that account had ME3 too.Rumbles wrote: ↑ November 13th, 2025, 20:27Definitely play Mass Effect series if you haven't yet, not the greatest shooter but the story and narrative itself is great. The SOMA was chewed up for me by certain youtuber recently so not much reason to go and actually play it now, maybe later. Guess ill try the other two then.

What is up with that? Is that a case of ****** ****** writers only being able to write what they know?
I haven't played any of those, but is it being used as a convenient narrative tool to direct the player? I can also imagine writers using it as a mouthpiece the player can't simply avoid.logincrash wrote: ↑ November 15th, 2025, 15:28I'm getting really tired of this "voice in your head" trope that's been surprisingly prevalent in vidya lately. Like, 4 games off the top of my head: Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate 3, Avowed, Bloodlines 2.

I actually really like that trope in books, but viewing an inner dialogue from the third person is very different from a disembodied voice talking at you while you're trying to play a game.
This trope is about a separate character in the protagonist's head. Cyberpunk has Keanu Reeves and BG3 has a gay illithid talk to you.WhiteShark wrote: ↑ November 15th, 2025, 15:41I haven't played any of those, but is it being used as a convenient narrative tool to direct the player? Yeah, I understood that part. That's why I said 'inner dialogue'. I've read several books where the protagonist has another entity living inside his head that talks to him.Tangerine wrote: ↑ November 15th, 2025, 15:48This trope is about a separate character in the protagonist's head. Bloodlines 2 has a reddit noir detective (who's just fine with ******* and ********) and Avowed has a ******* magical negro sheboon constantly babbling in your head about "Mother Nature" nonsense.Tangerine wrote: ↑ November 15th, 2025, 15:48This trope is about a separate character in the protagonist's head. I read that to mean the character talking to himself, but to further clarify, the voice is not just directing the player on how to play/where to go next, the plot is built around it existing as a separate entity that you need to deal with. Not sure if that's the case in Avowed and Bloodlines 2.
Also, it might be a good trope for CYOA games, where people voting for actions on a forum act as voices in the head of a protag. e.g. they were present inWhiteShark wrote: ↑ November 15th, 2025, 15:41I haven't played any of those, but is it being used as a convenient narrative tool to direct the player? - treave's EPIC on Dex,
- awful hospital,
- my hiatused CYOA had this planned, though it wasn't obvious.
In all cases they've added something to worldbuilding and/or character.
In the books Pratchett made a similar thing for Tiffany Aching, though her voices in the head weren't independent. And in Dune all the reverend mothers and Alia in particular also had them.
