Not sure if this deserves its own thread but this video popped up in my feed. I've never really heard of Solo RPG books before and wondered if anyone here has tried them and what people's thoughts are.

Are they any good?
Is the guy in the video recommending good ones or not?
Would you recommend any?

You never heard of Fighting Fantasy books? They were quite famous.
There is this series that is supposedly pretty good. I bought them but never got to play them...

Now that you mention it, they do ring a bell but I guess I just never paid them much attention.

I got a bit interested in Runescape recently, watched some videos and read... and what strikes me the most is how amateurish it was (and is). Random stats, ****** graphics, devs not knowing what are they doing, and the map, oh god, the map.

90% of japanese games being anime style is so silly yet nobody questions it
imagine if 90% of american games had the artstyle of Cuphead or Bendy and the Ink Machine
I'd play the **** out of a Max Fleischer style blobber.

Apparently Jonathan Blow is now a chud. He hates H1B, hates Indians, disliked techbros for importing indians, thinks GDP is fake, and slowly starts to hate women.

GDP was, at one point, a valid metric for assessing a country's economic activity, but when a metric becomes a target, it loses its validity as a metric. People since then have come up with incredibly gay ways to inflate GDP numbers, which do not represent real economic activity. The result is that we have since then structured our economy around two people paying each other eat a bucket of ****. Nothing of value has been produced as a result of this, but the GDP has gone up!

Rather dislike the "prisoners were experimented on to make them deadly weapons!" plot device, nobody is going to turn prisoners into dangerous cyborgs. Like most good plots, you need to base it on reality: soldier volunteers, often far too naive to understand what they're getting into, would be used.

One trend I really hate in many recent games is giving the character limitless traversal skills. It's so boring being able to fly around the map with ease or hop over buildings like they're nothing. Idk why devs are doing this but it really takes away from the fun of exploring

There's nothing to map in Clair Obscur, the maps are as linear as Call of Duty campaigns.
The minimap helps with orientation within the levels. There are some that branch off into multiple paths, and, sometimes, it's a little difficult to backtrack. The minimap is also helpful to find paths you would've easily missed without one.
The levels are corridors from start to finish.
If you miss a mini map in this game you're a woman or ********.

It works really well in games designed for it.
The best example I can think of is the Just Cause series.
You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.

the levels are indeed corridors, but sometimes they branch. And you never know if the branch you took will lead you to a boss, a dead end with loot, or a point of no return. It was pretty annoying.

It's called exploration.
And unfortunately it's almost non-existent in Clair Obscur.
There is zero need for a map of any kind.

Dark Souls profits from not having a map, and that game has actual level design.

Those videos are commentaries about working and running teams in the video game industry, not about his recent work on Jai. He's writing the thing himself.
