TLDR: Unreal Engine uses the wrong math to compute light.

The simple explanation is this: your brain automatically recognises what is real, and you cannot trick it. Any attempts will be immediately obvious to your unconscious mind.
This may explain why eye strain and headaches are reported on newer games too...
