The sense I'm getting is that it's a real place with regular peasants and bandits but knights specifically get reanimated there. Except for when they don't.

Yes, but no. Avalon isn't actually an afterlife, Arthur was gravely wounded in his final battle and taken there to recover.
But the game treats it as an afterlife of sorts.
Stuff like this makes me think they waivered during development and didn't revisit all of the dialog. It's not an afterlife, but everyone in it is dead?

Image
The game treats it as an afterlife but in the Arthur stories I'm fairly sure it's just a place of immortality.
Which makes it very weird because we have dead villagers being killed in the afterlife so their double-dead bodies can be raised into dead-undead monsters known as The Lost. I think the same game structure could have been better facilitated by something like "King Arthur is missing. 10 years later Sir Mordred returns to Camelot..."

Perhaps it's best to think of it like a purgatory

I'm not going to nitpick if purgatory has undead and permadeath, but thinking of it as purgatory considerably lowers the stakes imo.

The concept of Celtic afterlifes(e.g., tir na nog) don't map well onto Christian eschatology because they just aren't the same, they're more like the place you go after you die to continue living.
And that's almost certainly what inspired Avalon.

Will I regret using these all willy-nilly and then not being able to use the more powerful endgame ones? Are they only awarded from the challenges menu so I can plan everything out?

Image
Probably. I would save mutilation for your main damage dealer, which is unlikely to be Mordred. The most powerful essence is the +1 AP one. Try to match your character and build to the essences available eg: essence of bleeding for a bleed spec'ed character, etc. I normally start using them on early chapter 3, since by then I already figured out who my A and B team are. If you're Christian and you like Lady D, you can give her this essence, she is a solid DPS character. Balin is the best DPS in the game IMO and only OFR is really barred from using him so he too is a great candidate for it.

What's the easiest way to look up keyword terms like "outnumbered" or "injury token"? Is there a key I can press like in Baldur's Gate 3?
Outnumbered is the opposite of "dueling" and it activates when you are adjacent to more than one enemy. I would avoid "dueling" items on anyone except MAYBE Vanguards. Injury token prevents an injury from happening. So you lose the token instead of being injured. These keywords are all explained in-game IIRC, but there are also like several wikias.

Yeah but you have to hit escape and go into 3 separate menus to find the keywords. I was hoping there was a shortcut to go to the ones you are currently looking at in a tooltip.

Well, there's two more guys to recruit in Chapter 1. Also, light injuries are meh, just send Balin again. Remember you can ditch people after they get too injured and replace them with an aspirant.

Just finished chapter 1, having a good time with it. Only real tack I have on it is the voice acting ranging from great, to atrociously horrendous. Some of these lines make me want to turn off the audio.

You might know Lady Dindraine as Sir Percivale's sister, but she is a brave and skillful warrior who was overshadowed by his brother’s fame in Britannia

I'm pretty sure there's a line of dialog where she says she wasn't a fighter until she respawned in Avalon.

Avalon is a weird place. You can get nepotism powers when you die. Or end up a dead villager on a pile of corpses.

Furthermore, Avalon's existence makes it clear all of the Christian characters are WRONG so we are going OLD FAITH.

I'm not sure if this is intended, but the side missions are much harder than the main missions. Halfway through chapter two now, and I only really have to pause and think for missions I could theoretically skip.

High seas version? Nice. What are gems...? Anyway, I'm reinstalling the game, but I guess I won't be the first to badge it this time:

Funny how I said having two tanks would be bad, but Boon made it work. Goes to show the strength of KAKT in the sense that there isn't a single "meta" and many strategies are viable.

Wait, what? Why isn't the badge Arthur's face? This one is offensive to Tyrant players.

The gold lion is a prominent symbol associated with King Arthur. A warthog is a character named Andy on the children's TV show Arthur.

And yes, a gold dragon is a symbol more closely linked to Arthur than a gold lion, but it isn't featured in the game prominently and there are many more games with dragon logos than lion logos so the lion is more future-proof.

Was going to say this game needs explosive barrels or something to liven up the battlefields and then I remembered that like two out of the dozens of fights I did actually had them
