Junior Adventurer's Guild - August: King Arthur: Knight's Tale

King Arthur: Knight's Tale

You are Sir Mordred, the nemesis of King Arthur, the former black knight of the grim tales. You killed King Arthur, but with his dying breath, he struck you down. You both died – and yet, you both live.

The Lady of the Lake, the ruler of the mystical island of Avalon brought you back to end a true nightmare. She wants you to go on a knightly quest. She wants you to finish what you have begun. Kill King Arthur – or whatever he has become after she took his dying vessel to Avalon..

A Role-playing Tactical Game
Experience a unique hybrid between turn-based tactical games and traditional, character-centric RPGs! This dark fantasy version of the Arthurian mythology invites you to manage a team of heroes on the dangerous battlefield, while also engaging in moral choices, hero management, and the rebuilding of Camelot.

The dark fate of the kingdom
Explore a land of nightmares where vile monsters and magical creatures lurk within castles and forests. The battle between Arthur and Mordred brought death, both of them falling at the hands of each other, and now the consequences unfold. Arthur, resurrected in Avalon, is now an undying mad king, his pain slowly turning this magical place into a nightmare version of Britannia. You are Mordred, brought back to life to find Arthur, and ultimately, kill him to end this accursed condition.

The Round Table reborn
Gather your knights and send them on quests involving deep, tactical battles! Assemble a team of heroes, selecting from six classes (Defender, Champion, Marksman, Vanguard, Arcanist, Sage). Level them up, gain unique skill points, equip the best items looted from missions. But beware! Heroes can die, and the treatment of their injuries, curses, diseases take time. Between missions, make sure that Camelot has the right facilities for recovery, and prepare different heroes for different quests.

A question of loyalty
Heroes are your main resources – but no mere numbers! They have their own distinct personalities, goals, rivalries (even unique traits, skills and bond benefits). They will observe your decisions closely! Settle disputes, grant favours, select heroes who can work together, send them on missions they are comfortable with. Tread carefully, because their loyalty depends on many factors. They can even leave and turn against you!

Image

The making of a monarch
You, as a king, have a personality as well, shaped by your actions and moral choices. The Morality Chart will represent your status between Christianity and Old Faith, between Tyranny and Righteousness. Your choices affect values on this chart, influencing both gameplay and narrative.

The weight of decisions
Knight's Tale offers four different difficulty modes, from laid-back storytelling to the most grueling battles Avalon has ever seen. Those looking for even more challenge can also try Roguelite Mode. Here, every small decision matters – not only the moral choices, but actions taken in the turn-based combat as well. The campaign unfolds with a roguelite twist: no reloads, only regrets! The thrill of dealing with the consequences is half the fun, but your decisions also affect the story. Each playthrough can unfold differently, branching in unexpected ways.

The end is only the beginning
Play through the campaign (once or see multiple paths), and after that, you unlock the endgame, reserved only for the bravest. Tough new challenges appear on the map with mythic bossfights, random quests, more loot and character progression ultimately leading to the banishing of Balor, the monstrous god-king of the Fomorians.

Interesting how the obscurity and age of the nominations wax and wane.

So far I've only played the sequel to Knights of the Chalice, but keep hearing good things about the first one... :voting:

Doesn't look like Freedom Force will make up the spread but I made this pin for it last month because I found the perfect image for it.

It’s a very tight and cohesive experience compared to the sequel. The original kotc was Pierre doing his take on d&d classic modules like Against the Giants.

I wanted to vote for it, but I already started playing the King Arthur game, that's what I ultimately went with.

This one actually looks good :)

I'm guessing Legion IX should be considered separate but I'll let true gamers decide that for me

I don't know what you mean by this. Every Adventure Guild(tm) and Junior Adventure Guild(tm) game is good.

Legion IX felt very barebones, I didn't even finish it.
I don't really regret buying it because it's a good developer + it was cheap, but I'd say skip it unless you really, really like the main game.

I'm all for a good tactics game, but if this one's bad I'm to cut the knobs off all those who voted for it.

It's very good, but don't underestimate the difficulty. :)

Aye, I'm sure I'll find out. Not afraid of a challenge in a tactics game, I managed to be Radiant Dawn as a lad so I'm confident I can do this one. I just pray it's fun difficulty.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH, OMFG I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT THE VOTE THING BUT WON ANYWAY. Feelsgoodman.

Here are some tips (no spoilers) for newbies:
  • There will be two important choices in chapter one, one between two characters, another regarding the fate of a certain someone. The neutral choice is the "best" as it gives you more party members. In this game you need to manage a rotation of characters to avoid a death spiral due to injuries. OTOH alignment choices don't really matter in the early game since you will only get your alignment companions in chapter 2. So go neutral at least once and you'll thank me later.
  • Plan your alignment beforehand and be consistent. All combinations are viable, but I recommend against Christian-Tyrant for your first playthrough. The reason is character redundancy: Christians get one champion and one defender while tyrants get one champion and one defender. As a Christian you are starved for magic, which is why being Righteous is the way to go. Plus CR is THE most broken alignment in the game due to its unique mechanic that allows you to pass time without actually going into a mission. OFT and OFR are both solid choices with a lot of spellcasters. To give you some perspective: there are five sages and five arcanists in the game and only one of each is Christian. Four Arcanists and three Sages are Old Faith and one Sage is neutral. You CAN use OF characters that agree with you on the good-evil axis and MAYBE take OF-neutral characters, but it will be an uphill battle to max out their loyalty.
  • DON'T waste precious loyalty boosting missions on people who already agree with you. Companions whose alignment fully matches yours will love you regardless of any bonuses and neutral-agree companions need very little incentive. Save your sidequests for neutral or "conflicted" companions. DON'T bother with people who hate you, just fire them.
  • Don't invest much in Defender companions since the story will force you to take Sir Mordred and having 2 tanks is not a recipe for success. Sadly, defenders are mostly relegated to the post-endgame content. Also, ignore the criticism on archers, they used to suck, but 2.0 brought buffs across the board. So, YES, Lady Dindraine will be good from start to finish now.
  • Mordred is not your typical tank, he can't really force aggro or do the things you would expect from a traditional tank. OTOH his damage is very high and he brings a strong arsenal of debuffs and disables. Get that lightning stun rolling ASAP and life will be easier.

No Idea why but the game feels choppy for me. It says 60fps but it feels like 30.

Edit: Nvm, removed the 60fps lock and it runs smooth now.

I'm having fun. Only complaint so far is that exploring for loot with this camera is a bit tedious. Just give me the 11 coins for beating the mission and leave me alone.

So far so good. Moderate difficulty seems to be a moderate challenge, cannot just blitz through without a thought but a wee bit of room for mistakes. This game definitely shows dark arthurian fantasy much better than tainted grail.

Yes, but no. Avalon isn't actually an afterlife, Arthur was gravely wounded in his final battle and taken there to recover.
But the game treats it as an afterlife of sorts.

Will I regret using these all willy-nilly and then not being able to use the more powerful endgame ones? Are they only awarded from the challenges menu so I can plan everything out?

What's the easiest way to look up keyword terms like "outnumbered" or "injury token"? Is there a key I can press like in Baldur's Gate 3?

Stuff like this makes me think they waivered during development and didn't revisit all of the dialog. It's not an afterlife, but everyone in it is dead?

The game treats it as an afterlife but in the Arthur stories I'm fairly sure it's just a place of immortality.
