Once the creation kit drops I'm considering doing a 'group modding' effort if people are interested. Make a big list of NPCs to de-uglify, and everyone interested just works on some and contributes the face-gen code thing.
Perhaps follow it up with some story cleanup of pozz using the synthva tool.

Do black people have black diffuse maps? Or is it just a tint overlay in the skin shader?

AFAIK the color of characters, along with how they look, is all controlled by facegen. You know how you 'sculpt' your character's face, pick their race, etc.,? That's just using the facegen tech behind the scenes. I've never dived too far into it so I'm unsure if it also controls skin color, but probably?

edit:
I think skin color is its own separate RGB value, in skyrim at least.

I'm not sure what you mean by "facegen".

Traditionally in Beth games, the head mesh / nif is shared across everyone and is driven by morph sliders. (Essentially Shape keys that are weighted between two offsets) but that only affects the vertices and faces of the mesh.

For texture / rendering that will all be driven by the Shader. The question for me is, do they expose a RGB param that does a overlay / mix over the diffuse (this would mean all black npc's probably have white skin actually, since color mixing generally requires a very bright value) or are they leveraging different diffuse maps for the different skin colors / complexions.

It just changes what can be driven by parameterization vs what will require a new texture override.

Yup, They've been doing it that was as long as I remember. Body and Head are seperate nif files.. and your first person hands are different from your third person hands IIRC.

the technology they licensed for oblivion(? fo3?) —and likely extended over the years — is called facegen: https://facegen.com/
each face has a unique code you can easily share to export/import it

They might use Facegen to translate real faces to 3D Models.. but the underlying tech is still shape key weights.. Open a NIF file, they are basically glorified FBX files.
They do all their 3D Modelling in Maya / 3DS Max.. Morphs and Shape Keys are standard concepts in all 3D rendering, it's not engine specific.

Favorite Planet?
Favorite City?
Favorite Non-City Hang out Place?

One of my favorite spots is The Den.. it's a run down old star station with a few soldiers but also gets a lot of mercenary foot traffic and has a small trading post and a diner/bar ran by a nationalist.. One of my coziest ports to hang out in, I wish they did more stuff like this.

There are a bunch of smaller outposts, you just need to find them.
The Den is great for selling smuggled goods, btw. You don't get scanned when entering, and the trade authority will buy them.

I think I like Cydonia the most. I wish it was bigger tho.

Yea.. it feels weird that The Den doesn't scan you.. but I guess it's sort of in a forgotten part of space with it's glory days behind it.
A lot of the smaller outposts are **** though.. they just have 4 npc's that say "hello" and usually have one trader with a copy and pasted conversation..

Are there any actual good outposts?

the pozz **** is kinda wearing me down tbh
basically every marriage is either interracial or gay or gay and interracial

need an unpozz mod badly

And you know what? I'd probably accept it to some degree if it wasn't always a white person with a black person in a 15 person colony. It's like libtards don't understand genetics and think race is just some lottery that you get assigned at birth. None of this **** makes ANY SENSE WHATSOEVER.

Libtards genuinely do not understand genetics. They think it's some lottery and your genetics are just completely random.

Someone already posted this.. but white men are almost always in weak positions of power as well.. I didn't notice it at first but it's becoming blatantly obvious.

I go to a farm and the woman owns it.. the man married into it.
Even constellation with the Rich affluent white guy.. he's actually a mega simp and his wife runs the company.
I board a UC ship.. the soldier that greets me is white, and warns me about his amazing admiral who is strict and accomplished.. black man of course.

White men are always bumbling buffoons or **** or simps.. Black men and women are all leaders and in charge, Girl Boss Energy. Apparently in the future Tyrones took over and we all work at Chunks.

FO4 companions were significantly better. I also don't see any reason to build outposts other than to do it because it's there.
Kinda amazed at how few companions there are and how **** they are. The "crewmates" aren't full companions afaict. Maybe I'm wrong? Will try adventuring with one for a while. But there's only what — 4(?) "full" companions if not, compared to FO4's base game total of 13.
You also can't order them around or order them to do anything which is... wow, how did they manage to remove that feature? I have no way to send my companion ahead to alert enemies so I can get a better shot.
