The Game Rant Thread

Post by Nessa »

Post anything rant-related about games or mods here.

About time we had a game rant thread. I'll go first.

The Sim Settlements 2 FO4 Debacle

For anyone not in the know, SimS2 is a settlement overhaul for FO4 that lets your idiot settlers build stuff themselves. You can either place plots directly (similar to the old Sim games, Residential, Industrial, Commercial, Recreation, Municipal, etc.) and then tell settlers to build OOOR you can assign a mayor and just walk away and they build the whole town. Pretty great system if you're into strategy city building stuff. And also lets you build some really nice looking towns. (For FO4. :D )

I really liked the first chapter of this huge mod set. Liked the characters. Had an engaging plot (hey it's FO4, the bar is on the floor) and was a worthwhile main quest replacer. The only real complaints I have are poor FO4 choices like.... conversations not starting and it killing the whole quest. (Even Bethsoft knew this which is why you can just talk to a vanilla NPC to get going again.) Pathfinding not working. (Seriously, DO NOT RELY ON PATHFINDING modders! How hard is that!?) You have to save before each dialog encounter or it borks. But you know, FO4, what are we expecting here? :bounce: However, at the Chapter 2 point...
► Show Spoiler
So after 9 long games, I finally get to Chapter 3 where it isn't crashing and... IT SUCKS.   Don't be me.

The short version for people like @loregamer:

SimS 2:

Far too many infuriating things happened with the games I liked, can't be bothered to relitigate them all in detail.

Pokemon post 2013: X&Y marked a significant decline in the quality of the games that would continue, with increasingly more features, content, aesthetic talent, design philosophies, etc, being loss with every installment. Dexit was the point of no return. The worst part about it was the blatant lying from Masuda and Ohmori. I think this was the one entertainment thing over the past decade that I was the most mad about.

WoW: general post 2014 direction of the story. Upside down morality where mass murderers like Grom or the Horde get off scott free, anyone seeking to remove threats or to bring evildoers to account is demonized as "they are seeking revenge and revenge is bad!". Only wuss do-nothing white peacer Anduinism is allowed as the good guys now. "Ackshually the Light and the Titans aren't truly good, greeeey morality" and all that ****. Most of the cool old characters getting castrated or written out of the story to make way for pansy new OCs nobody likes. The last new character I liked was Yrel, back in 2014. PvP was abandoned after MoP and we have only gotten two battleground since (one of which has been removed). World PvP was neglected and then murdered with war mode. Other miscellaneous changes I disliked. Probably the biggest turn off was the blatant lying from the game design leads and the writers.

Trails: retardation of the story starting with Ao and CS3, lack of accountability, reneging on the world war, continually promising geopolitical conflicts but never delivering on the catastrophic consequences they entail. 13 games and only two characters have gotten married, feels bad. Also very disappointing that we finally got around to the Calvard Republic only for Falcom to clearly have no passion for it and to just copypaste what they see about modern USA politics on Twitter rather than building a cool fantasy nation from the ground up. Blatant lying from Toshihiro Kondo in interviews each year every year since 2017.

Final Fantasy: retardation of FF14's story after Stormblood. Yoshida not getting it. The Last Remnant director Hiroshi Takai being advertised as the director of FF16, but then Naoki Yoshida hogged the spotlight and then it turned out to just be a Yoshida game. Yoshida lying through his teeth about FF16 being an RPG.

GW2 starting with the second half of the Icebrood Saga which was advertised as an "expansion level" patch season. But by this point I couldn't get really mad anymore, just disappointed. Anet lying about IBS, then EoD, and then SotO, and so on.

Probably more I am forgetting. Warframe. Digital Extremes and their lies.

What irks me the most is various gaming corporations lying through their teeth about what their customers want or don't want when complaints, when wishes have been reposted on forums every day for years on end with tens of thousands of replies.

I really hated how X&Y were the beginning of Woke Pokemon where they made the region look like Paris and then made every other trainer a dark-skinned ******. That and the fact that the games were extremely ******* easy compared to the previous 5 entries.

But I'd rather not be reminded of that in a cutesy Japanese game about pocket monsters fighting in a European look-alike region

My complaint with Kalos is that it does not feel like a unique fantasy setting unto itself. Yes, the early gens were inspired by Japan, but they did not feel like it was IRL Japan. It felt like it was its own unique thing. Unova had some American influences but did not feel like it was just the actual real America. But Kalos did not feel like its own thing, it just felt like France. Likewise, Alola felt like it was just Hawaii.

How about a Skyrim rant?

My first Black Book on Solstheim. I get through the stupid easy traps. And the really hard combat (mods of course). I finally get to the end. Naive me is thinking:

"What horrifying secret drove that NPC nut crazy? Is it about the Dwemer? Could be some insidious knowledge about a Daedric Prince? Ulfric is sleeping with Galmar!? What could it be!???"

A **** buff!?
