Either you need rank 1 of the skill first, or I'm not sure that's how it works.
e.g., I have a high Pilot skill companion assigned to my ship but I cannot buy ship pieces that require high piloting.

some guys I helped in a side quest turned up in a random event later, that's nice. Overall, much more attention to that sort of detail compared to skyrim/fo4.

TLDR for those that don't want to watch:

- Only Shadow Quality and the Resolution Scale % actually affect FPS in any meaningful way, and are basically the 2 options to lower if you need better performance. And, of course, turning on FSR2/DLSS obviously.

A note on this game's implementation of reconstruction:

Usually games will have different settings for FSR2/DLSS like 'Quality', 'Balanced', and 'Performance', and each one uses a different ratio for the reconstruction. For example the 'Quality' setting in other games will use 0.67% of the native resolution, so if you are on 1440p and use FSR2 'Quality' in a game you will get 67% of 1440p which is 965p, then it's reconstructed back up to 1440p.

HOWEVER in Starfield the FSR2 option is only ON/OFF, and when ON you use the Resolution Scale % slider to manually select the percentage you want; for example if you are at 1440p and have FSR2 on, and the Resolution slider is set to 50% of the resolution, that means you're doing 720p being FSR2'd back up to 1440p.

The same holds true if you use the DLSS mod, btw. Works the same way as the game's FSR2 scaling, except it does the additional DLSS passes on RTX cards.

- If New Atlantis is raping your rig your only hope is seeing if lowering Crowd Density helps; helps with the CPU demand.

Every other options either does nothing when lowered, or gives no performance back while still lowering the quality. Stuff like Volumetrics, Reflections, the AO (GTAO I think it's called here), Contact Shadows, Indirect Lighting, etc, all give back at BEST a 1% worth of perf gain when set to 'LOW', so it's not worth lowering any of them from HIGH. He does say to avoid ULTRA though, even in these settings, as the ULTRA settings absolutely kill framerate and are barely noticeable.

He tested on an RTX 3070 8gb GPU.

It's depressing how boring the game looks. About the only positive is that it seems to not be filled with gay sex, which is rare for a sci-fi or fantasy game now days. They make up for it by having every other character be black, though.

Despite my general dislike of Bethesda I was still hoping that the game would go against my expectations and turn out to be good.
