Hot take. The Empire should have balkanized after the Oblivion Crisis. The Empire couldn't protect its subjects anymore and was just wasting resources in every piling bureaucracy. Back in the day, I always sided with the Imperials. Starting as a prisoner, Hadvar—a Nord Imperial—shows empathy toward you, and both he and his family treat you well afterward. I also liked Legate Rikke, who is also a Nord. Seeing Nords fighting for the Empire reminds me of a concept I support: assimilation.

However, the problem is that they’re fighting in their own homeland, against their own kin. When you talk to them, you start to feel that the geopolitical situation is more complex than it first appears. In the game, the Imperials often say that the civil war is weakening the Empire and making them more vulnerable to the Thalmor. They argue that only the Empire can truly defend Skyrim from the Thalmor.

But on the other hand, they allow the Thalmor to impose their rules in Skyrim, including banning Talos worship—which, from a different perspective now, seems foolish to me. At this point, I would definitely side with the Nords. They act like proud patriots, defending their culture, their religion, and their identity.

The Empire’s willingness to let the Thalmor impose their will reminds me of what’s happening in the West today—the inaction of our leaders in the face of new threats.

Oblivion was the first fantasy anything I really interacted with and got heavily invested in which is why I actually didn't care for elves at all for a very long time. Even now I kind of have a hard time fully embracing my feelings towards most elves when it comes to TES just because of how untraditionally they are portrayed. ESO and modded Skyrim are the only games where I've been able to make decent looking ones

Also, I'm fighting for Shor and the true Nord pantheon, not Talos. That was one of the most egregious examples of Emil Pagliarulo-****'s lack of give-a-**** in the writing department. Nords living in Cyrodiil couldn't give two shits about Talos during the Oblivion Crisis, and now Nords living in Skyrim are all 'muh Talos!'.

The Thalmor should've banned worship of primarily Lorkhan/Shezzar/Shor and also Talos (since he has essentially taken Shezzar's place in the Imperial Pantheon and was a Shezzarine in life).

EDIT/ADDENDUM: A government that not only allows, but actively aids and abets the persecution of its own citizens on behalf of an actively hostile foreign regime has lost any kind of legitimacy to rule. The Empire died with Martin Septim.

Jurgen Windcaller was a race traitor who lost one ******* battle and then proceeded to successfully hamstring the Nords from using their Kyne-given ability to Shout their enemies to pieces. The Greybeards are useless old fools who have let the cultural and religious traditions of the Nords all but vanish in the name of pacifism.
