Brass Lion Entertainment layed off a bunch of people. In case you don't know them, it's a POC-majority studio headquartered in New York City and Montréal that "focused on creating original fictional universes that center on Black, Brown, and other traditionally marginalized characters, cultures, and stories."
Serves marginalized targets, gets marginal returns, keeps marginal staff.

When their venture capitalists told them the money was being turned off, do you think they were called racists? Or do you think they only accepted blacktinox funding?

This tracks with the SBI Ceo's statements of desiring not a better product, but a better work environment. It's why games will simply never be good anymore. No more dudes pulling off hour shifts to get tons of content finished for deadline. It's incredibly toxic and degrading to want to sacrifice things to create something people will remember and enjoy for decades.

This reminds me of the economist - and one of the world's few based ******* - Thomas Sowell who stated how; for self-centered bureaucratic politicians, the bureaucracy itself is everything, while the end result is completely irrelevant.

So basically these game devs are wannabe bureaucrats who care more about the process of creating something rather than the quality of end product itself.

Creative process is an artist in agony pulling his object into existance out of work, but these devs don't work. They have obtaining recognition and social clout in view, with no work and no love for what they do, so they won't pain and suffer. They're normies with no muse.

Nobody remembered outer turds a year after launch, Arcanum will be considered one of the classics of the genre 100 years from now.

Tim Gayn says how any idea they had got put into the game as if that's a bad thing. The entire game is like some homebrew tabletop campaign where houserules kept being added and it's great.
Limited scoping of games is killing creativity, and it's not like it has done anything to speed up development.

I'd probably be much more motivated to work on a game where my ideas get put in than one where it's just a corporate brand approved safe game

The only way to avoid stuff like this it is make a firm rule of NEVER EXPLORE AWESOME FEATURES THAT AREN’T IN THE SPEC, and I don’t think anyone – developers, players, managers – wants that.
That's how developers operate now tho, and it is what current developers want.

The problem with these types of arguments & defenses is we know it can be done. We're currently standing in the ruins of their betters while they repeatedly reassure us it cannot be done.
If you point to how games used to have more features and be made in less than half the time with equal or less bugs, they'll simply move the goalposts. You see, modern tooling is simply too difficult compared to …when they had to make engines from scratch. Modern graphics take too long to make, never you mind that older graphics were not inherently worse but heavily constrained by technology. Those environments were toxic and problematic.

Eventually they will relent and say it is simply too much work and we are asking too much of them while demanding we give them more money for increasingly worse products. e.g., CDPR project lead saying gamers simply didn't understand how hard it was to make quests for CP2077 despite them doing a much better job of it at their own company only a handful of years prior.

And yes, equal or less bugs. Troika games were considered exceptionally buggy for their time, but I say they were just ahead of their time.

Shockingly, building an online store, integrating with payment processing, having so many cosmetics you can't load them all into memory, translating text into a dozen languages, recording voice lines for a dozen languages, putting revisions through sensitivity readers, and working with artists living on the other side of the planet adds some time and cost to making a game.

Oh no, the life of a trust fund baby that can afford to work in the game industry to spread their political views instead of getting a real job is so difficult.
