Hanamura (Shimada clan and crime syndicate's castle in Japan)
Hananoka (Hanamura was the first OW1 map demoed at Blizzcon 2014, but got removed from Overwatch 2). Hananoka is a remake of Hanamura, but to fit the current game design of symmetrical maps and having several capture points instead of just two to prevent a team from being wiped and then the attackers captured the second point and win. Lore wise this is supposed to be near Hanamura).

Nepal. In Overwatch's backstory, artificial intelligences (called "Omnics") were invented and then robots went to war trying to wipe out humanity, but failed and the factories that produced the Omnics (called Omniums) were destroyed. But some Omnics are still around and tried to coexist with humanity, though in most places people still remember the war and thus the Omnics are not well received there. The people of this village however are indifferent to Omnics, so the Omnics have established an enclave there, inhabiting an abandoned temple.

Shambali Monastery (Nepal). Like Hanonka, this map is supposed to be an updated remake. It is supposed to be the same Omnic enclave living right next to an indifferent human village.

This human runs a shop where he repairs Omnics. There is also a clothing store across the street that sells monk garbs to the Omnics, but it was visually uninteresting.

In this version, rather than claiming a huge ready-to-go abandoned monastery, it appears that the Omnics are excavating behind a shallow facade, digging out more rooms into the mountain.

Volskaya Industries (Moscow, Russia)
This place (right across the river from the Kremlin) produces giant mechs. The impression I get is that these mechs are piloted by humans, as the Russians would probably never trust autonomous weaponry again. There is a memorial and propaganda in one of the buildings on this map glorifying Russian soldiers who fought and died against the rebelling Omnics. There are a lot of these giant mechs standing around in the capital. I am not sure what imminent threat they are supposed to be guarding against. No other city in Overwatch has a deploy military presence like this. Maybe Russia got hit really hard in the war and this is supposed to be more of a morale measure for the traumatized populace.
Throne of Anubis (Egypt)
Looks like a final boss. If Overwatch had a singleplayer campaign or was an RPG, then this would be it. It is Anubis, who way back in 2014 Overwatch lore was being set up as the big bad of the franchise. He was a "god AI" who made the Omnium factories begin producing Omnics to wage war against humanity. He was subdued and interred within a pyramid in Egypt (apparently he can't just be blown up?), which then led to the shut down of the factories producing evil robots and the end of the war. His pyramid is guarded by some security company that Pharah works for. IIRC the original direction of OW's "story" was that someone on the outside would try to reawaken him.
Busan (South Korea)
South Korea in OW is menaced by a huge Omnic out in the ocean, a remnant from the prior war that didn't deactivate. So the Koreans established MEKA (a mecha unit) to repel against the threat. It is utterly ridiculous though that there are only five MEKA pilots, piloting 5 small mechs, and the pilots are streamer teenage girls.

Moon dust in a habitat environment? Awful idea. Those particles are like glass. They would eviscerate your lungs.
IIRC real satellite factory workers have to wear suits so as to reduce the risk of dirt or hairs getting onto a satellite's camera or delicate parts, which can't be feasibly cleaned or repaired in space. But apparently in OW it is pretty easy to just bring a satellite in and casually work on it in a garage while taking in the view, so I guess if they put it out there and it has dirt on it that impedes its operation then no biggie, they can just bring it back in. Or they have other mobile satellites better than ours that can fly around cleaning others off or fixing the problem.
Eichenwalde (Germany). Was the headquarters of an order of magitek armored knights, but most of them died standing against the Omnics.

IIRC the lore was that during the war against the Omnics, a nuclear powerplant blew up and irradiated most of Australia. This town was built by survivors within the radiation zone.

I like the weathering on the buildings. I also like how the textures of the environment is pretty desaturated, but there is a lot of white highlights, white stone, and white clouds to make the colors pop.

The local biker gang blew up the train tracks to intercept a cargo shipment and stole the munitions on board and carted it a short distance to their base. I suppose the American government is either significantly weakened, or there are too many crises going on for them to retaliate against a local biker gang.
