They didn't get axed because one of the higher ups at bioware had incriminating evidence on someone higher up at EA.
No, you can't convince me otherwise.

The Old Republic has been a money printer this entire time. EA got fed up with them using its success as an excuse to be inefficient with their single-player games, which is why they took it away from them.
More likely, one of the higher-ups at Bioware was in good with one of the EA execs and was able to make a somewhat-believable case for a decade or so. Just enough to push the fiction that, "this game will be our Skyrim killer!", whether the EA exec actually believed it or not.rusty_shackleford wrote: β April 6th, 2025, 14:34They didn't get axed because one of the higher ups at bioware had incriminating evidence on someone higher up at EA.

It really is usually who you know, not what you know.
Dragon Age 2 reminds me of SWTOR quite a lot. It basically plays just like it including the dialog and how quests are extremely short and self contained little menial tasks. I don't mind it though it's a very easy game to casually play after a long day and do a couple of quests and maybe get an amusing interaction or two.
I'm just stating the facts.

A lot of the losses by the Canadian branch of Bioware are also mitigated by the benefits the provincial government bribes them with to keep them in country.Kalarion wrote: β April 6th, 2025, 15:41More likely, one of the higher-ups at Bioware was in good with one of the EA execs and was able to make a somewhat-believable case for a decade or so. Sometimes I wonder how I managed to get through my single Inquisition playthrough back when it released, and one part that sticks as a fond memory is the tavern songs. Often some quest or one of the companions is at the tavern, and there's a bard playing her tunes. Really pleasant songs.
Should anyone consider trying this one out, you can safely end your playthrough after you have to leave Haven. It was one of the game's high notes and *** content gets boosted by 300% after that.

Both French and German versions had translated bard songs. The French ones even featured in the original version, in Orlais.Valter wrote: β April 6th, 2025, 20:07Sometimes I wonder how I managed to get through my single Inquisition playthrough back when it released, and one part that sticks as a fond memory is the tavern songs. And a couple of songs had the same melody as the Origins OST.

With the amount of ugly ****** or women in lead writer positions it's not shocking to me anymore. There's also that old prevailing opinion from the DOOM years where story was viewed as immaterial. John Carmack felt very strongly about that.logincrash wrote: β April 6th, 2025, 20:38It's crazy how so many talented people work on something so rotten from the inside, all because nobody seems to treat writing as an important part of vidya. I believe it's paramount, possibly the most important element of any media. Even a simple story is easy to **** up with the wrong person at the helm, polluting peoples efforts. How many games are penned as 4/10 or something just because the writing team **** the bed? And no lessons learned. Propaganda is the focus, the rest just needs to align with it no matter how forced. A russian friend made an off hand joke that people should be locked up in prison, as that inspired a number of russian authors to create great works. Maybe he has a point...
Yeah, so many enjoyable games I've dropped due to the writing being downright insulting.logincrash wrote: β April 6th, 2025, 20:38Both French and German versions had translated bard songs. Bioware thought writing was incredibly important, but their tastes are also incredibly lowbrow. What they think is good writing is at odds with yours.logincrash wrote: β April 6th, 2025, 20:38It's crazy how so many talented people work on something so rotten from the inside, all because nobody seems to treat writing as an important part of vidya. In FR as Ed Greenwood envisioned it, polygamy and "free love" are very commonplace, and homosexual relationships are common without being controversial at all. Mind you, Greenwood in his own notes on the Realms was very explicit about the sexuality in the Realms (I believe you can find his extensive notes on the "Candlekeep" website, at least you used to be able to), and his notes are far more "mature" rated than any printed version of the Realms.
The earlier, TSR editions of the FR published material whitewashed this almost completely, because of the particular "morality code" that TSR had developed under Lorraine William's reign of terror.
However, the new WoTC FR is more "PG" in this subject matter, detailing openly several major NPCs who are homosexual, bisexual or polyamourous. Its done in a fairly low-keep way, just noting it as another little detail of the rich descriptiveness of the Realms as a setting.

What is there to say anymore? The series "peaked" at Origins, which still had signs of Bioware's growing progressivism. Any further installment doubled down on mocking the Chantry, inserting feminism, and placing women in all important positions of power while evil white men tried to stop them. I can't even bring myself to play Origins, it feels utterly pointless when the next three games are so ******* terrible and inched ever closer to liberal insanity. It's all so tiresome. I remember watching the /vg/ dragon age threads mock Bioware for constantly listening to tumblr and David Gayders homosexual replies on Bioware's old forum.Vergil wrote: β April 6th, 2025, 21:57Cool.Atlantico wrote: β April 6th, 2025, 21:19Truth. That being said, if anyone hasn't, just play Origins and pretend it was a one hit title. Then go play Underrail or something that isn't trying to manipulate your perceptions of normality.

It's all connected. Dragon Age is downstream from Greenwood. Even so the first DA was rather decent due to the worldbuilding, which was fairly competently stolen inspired from other works.Vergil wrote: β April 6th, 2025, 21:57Cool.Atlantico wrote: β April 6th, 2025, 21:19Truth. There are two basic camps of roleplayers. Those who want to larp Lord of the Rings and those who want to roleplay their sexual fantasies. Never shall the twain meet.
What about roleplayers who want to role-play not having mexicans respond to their posts?Atlantico wrote: β April 6th, 2025, 23:56It's all connected. Dragon Age is downstream from Greenwood.
