I really liked the appearance of some of the armor styles of classic Final Fantasy, specially the horned helmets which are reminiscent of the helmers of bronze-age civilizations.

I wasn't old enough to experience it firsthand, but I believe the dudebro crowd wasn’t particularly into video games before Halo was released. It seemed to perfectly coincide with the mainstream adoption of health regeneration in FPSes , which became a standard in the genre.

What I meant to emphasize was the shared design elements in male heroes of that era, rather than suggesting they all looked alike. @traxtan’s post sums it up perfectly.

Given the option, I’d gladly take the gruff, edgy protagonist from back then over whatever the hell we have now, any time of the day
