Drawing and animating something this hideous is truly an art form, must have gone through hundreds of sensitivity artists and consultants.
She's half white apparently but barely looks like it.

Average non-mobile video game, especially for certain genres like strategy or RPGs without a focus on romance, probably have more men with color blindness in its potential customer pool than women total.
These are the things I think about when a game has a selectable female protagonist with her own voiceovers, animations, etc., but if they even bothered to handle color blindness it's just some graphics filter.

That's because they think of "color blindness" as "not seeing race," which is a huge no-no and a racist mindset of ignoring the "lived experience" of "people" of "color."rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 4th, 2025, 07:38Average non-mobile video game, especially for certain genres like strategy or RPGs without a focus on romance, probably have more men with color blindness in its potential customer pool than women total.

Words alone can't express how terrible Unreal Engine is—it's like a slop factory for game development. I’ve revisited a bunch of UE3 and UE4 games, and many have weird texture and pop-in issues. You can usually fix these by adjusting the texture pool settings in the engine’s config file. The thing is, the usage of this engine is so ubiquitous these days, and because it’s easy to use, many modern releases end up looking the same, with similar lighting and inefficient CPU/VRAM handling. Oh, and Mass Effect's head model for male Shepard looks like the one for common mob enemies in Batman Arkham Asylum and Fenix from Gears of War. now I can’t unsee it.

Are you talking about the customizable one or the default Sheploo face based off of the Dutch male model?psychic_dream wrote: ↑ April 4th, 2025, 10:44Oh, and Mass Effect's head model for male Shepard looks like the one for common mob enemies in Batman Arkham Asylum and Fenix from Gears of War. now I can’t unsee it.

So far she is not as obnoxious as other negro characters. One cringy scene where they are packing their stuff because of the Hurricane (They danced and sang for a few seconds, because black people I guess?) Environment graphics are nice, Models are fine too, they are stylized like the Sea of Thieves ones but I guess less ugly except for Hazel. Animations are nice too and have a stop motion effect going on (Cutscenes are fixed but if you want smooth animations during gameplay, you can disable it) And Hazel doesn't comment everything that is happening (First time removing stigma, the stuff that causes the environment to grow flesh and tendrils, she just looks around in awe and then continues on, Forspoken would've made Hazel go "DID I JUST DO THAT? I DID NOT JUST DO THAT, I JUST REMOVED STIGMA WITH MY HOOKS" )

Not that I know of. It's just some weird orb floating above some fountain like thing? Kinda like the Oblivion Blood Fountains-
Racism didn't appear in an overt way except I guess that her father is white and his family did not approve of him marrying a black woman. Hazels white grandmother is still alive and lives close by in a mansion but they are estranged.
Hazel did say "huh, rich peoples homes" because of a hidden room.

He absolutely does. Just look at this MF, buzzcut, stubble, and that expression, as if he just woke up from a heavy blackout. The infamous guy has comparable facial traits too. As much as I enjoy dunking on modern game design sensibilities, I’m glad we’ve moved past the era when so many AAA protagonists had the same look for years.Finarfin wrote: ↑ April 4th, 2025, 11:06Shepard does not look like Marcus Fenix nor the goons from the first Arkham game. ***** is tripping.

not sure what my racial background has to do with this, but whatever floats your boat. My point is, having the main male lead look hyper rugged, with a buzzcut and stoic demeanor, was a pretty common trend in the late 00s. It's clear that game companies were targeting the dudebro crowd with characters like that.
